The present invention relates generally to washbasins. More particularly the lIlVQIIl'IIOH" relates to that type of washbasin which is formed of one plece castlng and comprises a bowl and atop plate which is provided with supporting legs and faucets for filling bowl and embodies a, central opening through which access may be had to the bowl.
Heretofore it has been customary in the manufacture of washbasins of the aforemenfront portion thereof terminates in close proximity to the front of the bowl and. is
' straight, roundedor slightly indented in the v central part thereof. In practice t. has been found that when the top plate is formed in this manner the user of the basin often soils his or her clothes and wctsthe subjacent floor by reason of the fact that the forearms, during washing of the hands and face, are positioned outwardly of the top plate and water is permitted to drip from the users elbows towards the floor. 1 r I The priinaryobgect of the. invention is to; provide a washbasln of the character under.
consideration in which the front portion of the top plate is provided with a pair of lat erally spaced extensions which are shaped to. receive therebetween the waist part of the user of the basin and are of such length and design that they underlie the users forearms and elbows, during use of the bowl forwashing of the hands or face, and operate to catch any and all drlppings fromthe elbows and to drain the same into the bowl.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a washbasin which is generally of new and improved construction, may be manufactnred at a. comparatively low cost, and has feel-t ain inherent advantages over previously designed basinofa similar character or type. 7
Other objects of the invention and the various advantages and character sticsof the present basin constructionwillbe apparentto those skilled in the'art from a consideration of the following detailed description.
The invention consists in the several nov'el p arfeatures hereinafter 'setforth and more ticularly defined by the claim, at the conclu sion hereof.
the basin.

'.lne WfiSllbtJSlIl which forms the sub ect matter of the present invention is formed of aone piece casting and comprises a bowl '0 iew of .awashbasin embodying the inven' and a slabor top plate 6. The-latteris rec- I ope iing 8.- The bowl 5 underlies the central portion of the top plate and is joined to the tangular in conformation, embodies at the sides 7 and back thereof ,a'vertically extending flange 7,. andh'as formed therein a central.
partyof, said plate that defines the opening 8.
Faucets 9 for supplying water to the bowlf water from the faucets 9. The vertical flange 7 projectsslightly above the top plate 6 so as to form a head or rimjfor preventing any water that is splashed onto the top plate fromflowingover the sides or back of the basin. Thetop plate slopes inwardly and down- 'war'dly from the bead-forming flange 7' in* order to causethe splashed water:to drain back-into the bowl.
In addition to thebowl and topplate, the
washbasincomprises a pair of laterally spaced extensions 13. These extensions are formed integrally with 'the top" plate 6 and ,projectforwardly from the front portion of V p 7 7 Theinner or .oppositelyfacing' 7 side partfs'of the extensions are ioinedtogether V at the inner parts thereof and are curved so as to be concave andto form together a semicircular pocket 14 which is positioned directly in front of and in close proximity to the bowl and is adapted to receive and conform substantially to the waist region or part of the user of the basin. The outer side parts and the outer ends of the extensions are adapted to' underlie the users forearmsan'd elbows, respectively, so as to catch all drippings that occur during washing of the hands or face and prevent such'dripping from dropping downwardly onto the clothes of the user or the floor. The extensions are preferably formedso that the outer side parts thereof are flush with the sides of the top plate. A flange 15 is formed integrally with the marginal parts of the extensions and is in the natureof a'continuation of the flange 7. The extensions slope downwardly towards the bowl so that the dripping drain onto the top plate and through the opening 8. The outer ends of the extensions are rounded so as to present no sharp corners and conform more or less to the elbows.
In washing, the user of the basin will stand directly in front'of the bowl with his or her waist region in the pocket 14. In this position the user may wash the hands or face without the remotest possibility of wetting the subjacent floor or soiling the clothes for the reason that any drippings from the elbows or forearms are caught by the extensions and returned to the bowl 5.
The washbasin herein disclosed may be readily installed, takes up but a comparatively small amount of space, and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost. It is to be distinguished from basins having a slight notch or recess in the front thereof for reception of the users neck in shampooing, by reason of the fact that extensions 13 are of such length and character that they serve to underlie the elbows and forearms and form a semi-circular pocket into which the users waist is adapted to fit.
The invention is not to be restricted to the details set forth since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
a As a new article of manufacture, a wash basin comprising a rectangular top plate having a substantially circular opening in the front portionthereof, a bowl of normal size connected to the top plate and positioned beneath the opening, and a pair of laterally spaced, marginally flanged, elongated extnsions connected to and projecting forwardly from the front corner portions of the top plate and having the oppositely facing side parts thereof shaped so as to form therebetween and directly in front of and near the bowl opening a comparatively large semicircular pocket for receiving and completely surrounding the front and side portions of the waist of the user of the basin, said extensions being approximately half the depth of the top plate and of such area and design that during the use of the bowl they underlie completely the users elbows as well as forearms in order to catch all drippings therefrom, and being inclined towards the plate so as to drain such drippings into the bowl.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 21st day of November, 1929.
