OVERHOLTZ, OF FAIR OAS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 MCCLINTIO- IYIAR'SHALL CORPORATION, OF BETELEEEM, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA OUTDOOR ADVERTISING STRUCTURE' Application filed March 28, 1931. Serial No. 526,092.
l related to new and improved means for detachably securing the lattice to the structure.
The lattice employed in the modern allmetal outdoor' advertising structure is preferably formed of sheet metal. Like all other partsof suc-h structures, the lattice must necessarily be of such construction and be mounted in sucli a manner that it may be readily erected and taken down.
Among the objects of my invention are to `provide simple and elncient means for detacha-bly securing the lattice to the structure;
to provide a plurality of lat-tic sections having reinforcing means thereon; to provide attaching means co-actmg with means on the f lattice to removably secure the lattice to the structure; and to provide clamping means to secure the lattice to the base members of the advertising structure.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an outdoor advertising structure embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a front perspective view of two lattice sections showing the attaching means;
Fig. 3, an enlargeddetail view of one of the attaching means;
Fig.V 4', a Vsectional view taken on the line IVf--IV of Fig. 3;
VFig; 5, a rear perspective view of an end lattice section, showing the means for clamping the same to a corner base member of the i strucure; and
F ig. 6, a cross-section taken onl the line VI-VI of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, thetype of advertising structure illustrated is what is known in theart as a bullet-in, and includes a supporting framework having' spaced-apart angle-iron uprights 2, a panel construction consisting of a plurality of removably mounted panel sections 3 secured to the framework in any suitable manner, and metal molding or trim bordering the panel sections, including a cornice Ll, columns 5, bottom molding 6, corner bases 7, and intermediate sub-bases 8.
Positioned below the bottom molding 6 and extending between the corner bases 7 and the sub-bases 8, I provide a metal lattice of diamond or diagonal form, comprising a plurality of lattice sect-ions extending between the uprights 2 and including end sections 9 and intermediate sections 10.
The said lattice sections are preferably formed of sheet metal cut and bent into the desired configuration, and include a plurality of spaced-apart inclined channel-like portions 11. Spaced-apart diamond-shaped openings 12 are formed in the sheet between the channel-like port-ions 11, by cutting and stamping out portions of the metal and bending the same rearwardly of the channellike portions to form a series of fins 13, disposed at a like and opposite inclination to the said channel-like portions.
One of the important features of my invention resides in the reinforcing framing members for the lattice sections, arranged and constructed to provide adequate means for securing the sections together, and to cooperate with attaching means for securing the lattice to the structure. Thus, reinforcing members 14, preferably formed of sheet metal and channel-shaped in cross section, are secured along thetop edgesA of the lattice sections by spot welding the front flanges 15 thereof to the upper portions of the lattice channel-like portions 11. Thev flat web portions 16 of said members extend rearwardly of the lattice sections and terminate in down-turned longitudinal flanges 1T.
Similarly, the lower edges of the lattice sections are provided with reinforcing members 18 of Z-shape in cross-section, having upturned flanges 19 thereof spoty welded to the channel-like portions 11. The flat web portions 2O entend rearwardly of the sections and terminate in down-turned longitudinal flanges 21, said flanges 21 being prefk21 of a lattice sec-tion.
erably disposed in' the same vertical plane as the langes 17 of the upper reinforcing members.
The end portions of the reinforcing inemloers 14 and 18 extend beyond the ends of the latticejsections, and are formed with offset portions for joining said members together.
Thus, in Fig. 2, I have illustrated the joining ends or two lattice sections, constructed inithe'manner of my invention, it-being`nn` derstood that the other ends ci said sections will be formed in a like manner. The adjacent end portions of the lattice are 'adapted to be overlapped and joined along the lines e-z by means of suitable screws' or bolts passed throughthe registeringopenings 22 in thechannel-jlike portions 11.y the latweb portions 16 and'20 of the reinforcingmem'bers are designed .to be over-y lapped and joined by means of screws and the registering openings 23.y 'Y
QTo permit the projecting' end portions of the reinforcingmembers to be overlapped in 'this manner, and to facilitate assembly thereof, the front - flanges 15 and 19 onjone 'lattice section are'cut away as at 24, and the rear down-turned flangesland 21 are cut away a like distance on the adjoining lattice section, as at 25. With the adjacent endsV lattice' swung toward the upright 2 for en-.
gagement of the lange17k with retainer means including a retainer 27 preferably formed oit" a iiat rectangular plate of metal having'a central rbolt-receiving opening therein for positioning` the same on a bolt 28o-n the upright.
The width of the member 27 ,is such that when it isin the horizontal position of Fig. 4the flange 17 of ythe lattice section will pass thereover'. v Vhen said flange has been moved thereover into engagementr withthe Vfront face of the upright 2, the retainer may be rotated on the bolt to assume the vertical position of Figs. 2V and 3, and upon tightening the bolt, the retainer will securely clamp the said liange to the upright. Y
VAs stated herein, the lattice sections extendy between the uprights 2, and henceone of two adjoining sections may be secured to an upright inthe manner of' Fig. 2,'-and the other adjoining section bolted thereto by meansot Likewise,"
the registering openings 22 and 23. A deco- Y rative apron or .trim 29 may be provided along the lower edges of the lattice sections,
tending behind the corner base member 7.
The extreme end of said lattice sectionV is provided with a vertical angle member 30 Welded thereto to provide additional reinforcement, thereby preventing injury tothe free endmportionsof said lattice.
The corner base 7is angular in form, andy isk preferably formed of sheet metal, having a rectangular depression or panel. 31- in the `front wall orface 32 thereof. ,The innerlvertical edge of said base is bent tofform an angle portion 33 having a rear vertical flange 34. .f .f y j T Secured to the rear of the Vfront wally 32 byme'ansof a spotvvelding, I provide avertically extending Zeshaped vmemberr 35 hav ing a kvertical flange 36 disposed in the lsame plane and spaced from the flange 34,150 form" a vertical slot,37"open at the ends thereof. Said slot`37 is designed to receive. boltsv38V therein for mounting U-shaped clamping members 39. The clamping members 39 are provided with extending leg portionslO and: a plurality of bolt receiving openings 41,] Y For the :purpose of positioning the clampf ing members 39, the bolts38 are inserted. inA
the slot37 and the shanks'of the bolts' extendedthrough any of the adjacent diamond shaped openings 12 in the lattice. By reason of the plurality of yopenings 41v in the members 39, the clamping members are adjustable to span the -distance between a charlnelflikey portion 11 of thelattice and the rear of the panel 31 of the base 7 and when so 'posi tioned,the leg portions 40 of said members engage and contact with said portions 11 and panel 31. Upon tightening the nuts on the bolts 38, the clamping members will clamp the latticesecurely againstthe rear of 'the panel 31, as particularly shown in Fig. Thus, it will be seen' that by meansr ofmy invention, the entireV assembled lattice, .com` prising a plurality ofv sections, may be securely mounted on an outdoor advertising structure. rlhe attaching or securing means of my invention may be readily v.applied or. removed to provide for readyV attachment and4 detachment.
The sub-bases 8 may be formedv with the slot construction of the corner bases?, Where-A by they may be readily applied to the front ofthe lattice structureby eans of thebolts 38 and thecl'amps39. v y l.,
75 the end sections of the lattice. Anendv lattice Y section 9 is shown in Fig 5, preferably-ex- I claim:
