Application filed .Tune 16,
This invention relates to Outdoor advertising structures, and particularly to new and improved border elements, as cornices, sills, columns, column capitals, column bases, and' sub-bases, and means for mounting and supporting said elements;
In the drawings, I have shown a bulletin construction, but my invention is not to be limited thereto, as it may be advantageously embodied in poster panel constructions of outdoor advertising structures. i
' In outdoor advertising structures, whether or" the bulletin type or the poster panel type, it is highly desirable that the structure should be of such character that it may be readily set up and taken down; also, that the panels, particularly in the bulletin type, may be re*- inoved from and' applied to the structure with a minimum of trouble and expense. The present invention embodies a construction having" the said qualities, and, in addition thereto, comprises novel border elements and simple and eflicient mountings for said elements. i Y
In the accompanying drawings, which il' lustrate an application of my invention: Y
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of an outdoor advertising bulletin constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2, is a broken perspective view, particularly showing the interior of a corner of the structure; y
Iiigs. 3, 4, 5 and 6, horizontal sections taken on lines III-III, IV-IV, V-V and'VI- VI, respectively, of Fig, 2; and
Fig. 7, a horizontal section taken on line VII-VII of Fig. 1. y
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates uprights of a steel framing employed forsup-v portingthe elements entering into the bulletin construction, and 6 are horizontally eX- tending members of the framing. The removable panels 7 are detachably secured to the framing by means of L-bolts 8.
The border elements of frame of the structure are all preferably made from sheet metal, bent and shaped to provide an attractive appearance when assembled in the bulletin structure, and, as illustrated, include a top 0 cornice member 9, a bottom sill member 10,

and column membersproper 11. Each of the columns 11 includes a columnV capital 12 and ka columnl base 13. kCorner. sub-bases ltand Y intermedi ate sub-bases 15, also vmade of metal", ,L
are associated with the bord-er elements. In
1/z'tdditionito the parts mentioned, the Structure includes a lattice 16,"i'n thisjinstance.
V.made of wood, although` a metglliglattice H l'y be'employed.
Asiillus'trated and as pref-erred, the'cornice` member is reinforced by two anglebars '17, andisv mounted. on` a plurality of brackets 1S, the latter being attached tothe uprights 5.y
`'Ilre columnstructures are arranged at op- )osite ends of the bulletinV and in'spaced relation to theframing proper, but in overlapping relationship with the panels ,1 of .the structure and portions of the said framing. 'Ilie`l1ne'ans for mount-ing the parts or ele- V`ments entering into .the columns, constitute" important and characteristic features ofthe Vpresent invention.. rIlhese columns, when assembledgwith the framing, panels, etc., constitute the vertically extending side or end corners ofthe structures, and, in effect, each ,forms acontinuous corner structure ofatltrac'tive designand one that may be mounted rpon a corner sub-base member, as particularly vshown'byIJig. 1.
@The mountings for said. Vcolumns include supplemental vertically extending angle members for uprights 19secured to the outer ends ofthe horizontal members 6, in vertical planes lying beyond the sideV edges of the panelsf'and'spaced away from the outermost uprights 5 of the framing by means. of bolts 20.; v`Uprights 19A extend throughout the height Of the strueture,`and are designed to lcarry a plurality of brackets, the latter being adapted to be entered 4inand securedk to 'the respectivey elements entering into the construction ofthe columns, as well as the corner sub-bases. Y Thus, I 'employ brackets 21 for the'column capitals, brackets z22, brackets 23 for column bases'l, and brackets24 for the sub-bases 14. The bracket members 22 are each slotted, as* at @,*through which bolts 25 are passed to secure-the said brackets to the supplemental uprights. vThe provision of slotsa allowsfor the desired amount of adjustability when assembling the parts.
For example, when it is desired to employ panels 7 of other than the standard thickness, thebrackets 22, 23 and 24 may be so adjusted on the supplemental uprights 19 by means of the slotted openings a, as to provide for the adaption of the border construction, and
more specifically the columns and their parts, to various types of panels.
All of said brackets are provided with right angle flanges b, having a plurality of openings therein for the purpose of securing thev sheet metal column structures thereto by means of suitable screws or bolts. Such an assembly of parts within the column structures provides for rigidity by reason ofthe vsuppleinenal uprights 19 and their associated brackets, 'the latter in turn being secured to vthe sheet metal structures as prescribed.
In addition to the brackets 24, within the corner sub-bases 14, I have provided additional brackets or reinforcing members 24a positioned within the front portions of said sub-bases, secured to the sheet metal thereof and bolted the flanges of the brackets 24, as
at c. Thus,*in addition to the transverse reinforcement produced by the brackets 24, 1ongitudinal strength is given to said sub-bases by means of the' brackets 24a- I claim: n
-l. -In an outdoor advertising structure, the combination with a supporting steel framing including metallic upright and horizontally extending members, panels on the framing, a supplemental metallic upright spaced beyond the panels and attached to a horizontal member or" the framing, a hollow metallic column member spaced from the panels and positioned over the supplemental member,
and metallic angular brackets within the column and attached to the supplemental member and column member.
2. In an outdoor advertising structure, the combination with a steel supporting framing tered in the column for attachingit to the supplemental member, a bracket entered in the capital element for attaching it to the supplemental member, and a bracket entered in the base element for attaching the latter to said supplemental member.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
