Description
Dec. 13,1932. w. HAWLEY 1,890,541
FIRE EXTINGUISHER Filed Feb. 17. 1951 INVENTOR BY 0*; w Mw l-L ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 1 3, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 LUTHER w. HAWLEY, OF NEW ocHELLE, NEW. YORK, AssIeNoR To INTERNATIONAL FIRE EQUIPMENT CORPORATION, OF wEsT NEW BRIGHTON, NEW YORK, A. conic RATION OF DELAWARE FIRE ExTI e sHER This invention relates to fire-extinguishers and more particularly to extinguishers of the grenade type.
The invention has for its salient object to provide an extinguisher of the type specified comprising a frangible container or grenade and a support therefor, so relatively constructed and arranged that the grenade will be automatically released in case of fire and upon a predetermined rise in temperature, or can be easily and quickly manually released When desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character described that will be attractive in appearance and will efficiently perform the required functions.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view,'partly in section, of a grenade and support constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the upper end of the grenade and the portions ofthe socket in which it is gripped and supported;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the coacting portions of the socket and grenade;
Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional elevation taken substantially on line 4, 4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating a slightly different form of construction.
The invention briefly described consists of a frangible container or grenade, preferably formed of glass, and a socket for receiving the upper end of the grenade and fusible means for supporting the socket and grenade. The grenade and socket have their coacting portions so constructed and arranged that the grenade can be manually released by a downward pull thereon and the fusible element is so arranged that upon a predetermined rise in temperature the grenade will drop and break. Some suitable fire extinguishing liquid, such as carbon tetrachloride, is used in the grenade and upon the release of this liquid the fire is quickly extinguished.
Further details of the invention will appear from the following description.
7 In the particular embodimentof the in- "vention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawing there is shown a frangible container or grenade 10, preferably formed of glass. The
grenade encloses a suitable fire extinguishing liquid,such as carbon tetrachloride, which is hermetically sealed therein. A cap 11, preferably formed of metal,is secured around the upper end of the grenade and is provided with an annular groove 12 which seats in'a groove 13 formed in the grenade.
' The cap 11 is so dimensioned as to fit within a socket 15 which, in the form of the invention illustrated, simulates in appearance an electric light socket. The lower portion of the socket 15 is slitted, as shown at 16, to
provide a plurality of vresilient clips :or
shown at 18, the indented portions being adapted to seat in the annular groove 12 of the cap 11. The cap is pushed upwardly in the'socket to aposition in which the clips will engage the groove 12. In case someone is present when a fire takes place the grenade can be grasped by the hand and'will be released from the socket. by a slight pull thereon. No twisting or turning of the grenade is necessary. a
The socket has secured to the upper end thereof a ring which is connected to a ring 21' of a bracket or supporting plate 22 by means of a fusible link 23. The rings 20 and 21 are cut away, as shown at 24, to permitthe fusible link 23 to be placed therein.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fi 5 the socket 15 has secured therein a pluraity of resilient clips 30, each clip being indented at its lower end, as shown at 81. The clips are adapted to receive the cap 11 and the indented portions engage the annular groove 12. r 7
From the foregoing specification it will be evident that a simple, practical and efficient fire extinguisher has been designed andthat the parts are so relatively constructed and arranged #that the frangible container or grenade will be automatically releasedupon a predetermined rise in temperature, mean be easily and quickly released from the socket by a slightpull on the grenade. Parinvention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim is 11. A fire extinguisher comprising a socket,
hon-positive, resilient clamping means carried by the socket, and a closed frangible fire extinguisher container of fire extinguishing liquid having a portionadapted to engageable by said clamping means, said clamping means and ofiset portions of the container being constructed and arranged to groove being constructed and arranged to permit withdrawal of thegrenade from the socket by a direct pull on the grenade.
3. A. fire extinguisher comprising a socket, resilient clips carried thereby and having offset portions engageable with a fire extinguisher grenade, and a frangible grenade of re extinguishing liquid. having an elongated portion adapted to fit within said socketand havin an offset portion adapted to receive the ofi set portions of said clips, said offset portions and grenade being constructed andarranged to be releasable from the socket clips by a direct pull on the grenade.
having offset portions engageable by said clamping means, said ofii'set portions and grenade being constructed and arranged to be releasable from said clamping means by a direct pull on the grenade,
' LUTHER W. HAWLEY.
fit into said socket andhaving ofiset portions A. A fire extinguisher comprising a socket,
resilient clips carried thereby and having offset portions engageable with a fire extinguisher grenade, and a frangible grenade of I re extinguishing liquid having an elongated portion adapted to fit within said socket and having a groove adapted to receive the offset portions of said clips, said offset portions and grenadebeing constructed and arrangedto be releasablefrom the socket clips by a direct pull on the grenade.
5. A fire extinguisher comprising'a socket, resilient clamping means carried by the socket, vand a frangible hermetically sealed fire extinguisher container having a portion adapted to releasably fit into said socket and
