:ERIK w, DAUBLnoF DETROIT. MICHIGAN l noons'ror Application filed February the adjacent face of the door a trunnion is so supported that it may both be turned about its axis and moved substantially at right ang'le's thereto; and to form spaced extensions on the plate which proj ect upwardly adjacent the door `behind the lower extremities of the outwardly fiexed projections to engage corresponding flat faces formed' on the trunnion extremities so that .the said trunnion may only drop to the bottom of the bearing formed between the forwardly projecting plate portions and the adjacent face of the door` when it has been turned to a givenposition; and Vto provide a holding member which projects from the trunnion between the said outwardly projecting plate portions. Thus I aim Yto provide means for retaining the trunnion against accidental rotation when the holding member has been turned to an upwardly directed position in which it is placed when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a door stop wherein the spacing both between the fiat faces on the trunnionk andV that between the extensions which engage the flat faces is greater than the spacing between the forwardly flexed bearing portions so that at all angular positions of the trunnion a portion thereof will lie adjacent the forwardly flexed bearing portions, thus preventing undue play of the trunnion when it lies in the upper bearing portion.
` A further object of the invention is to provide a doorstep wherein the holding `member is pivotally mounted on a plate in such a manner that it is permitted limited movement at right angles to its axis, and to provide a catch on the member which cooperates with a recess formed in the plate so 5o that the said member may be positively held `2, 1932. serial No. 590,430.v y
an'upwardly directed position when not With these and'other objects and advantages in view which willfbecome apparent as -the specification proceeds, xthe invention is hereinafter more fully described with the aid of the accompanyingv drawing, in'which:
Figure l illustrates a'front elevationof the invention applied to a door.
FigureQis afsideview thereof with the holding member in operating position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to that shown 'in' Figure 2 except that the holding memberis supported in an upwardly directed position, an
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the 1 door. i Y
Referring tothe drawing, l designates a plate which isattachedto one side of a door `A .as by lscrews 2, and intermediately of-its height the said plate is outwardly flexed at 3. Integral "with the plate and 'projecting upwardly therefrom adjac-ent the face of the door A fromzthe lower extremity of the out? wardlyr fiexed portion 3 is aplate'extension 4. The outwardlyfiexed portion 3 is vertically slotted at 3a to form two spaced and vertically elongated bearings 5 between it and the door A. The plate extension 4'is also vertically slotted from its upper lmargin as shownY at y6, andthe kwidth of the slot 6zis greater than that of the slot 3a for a -reason that `will hereinafter become apparent.. 7 denotes a wall formedb-y the platev 1 and ex tending completelyacross the lat-ter between the lowerl extremities of the slots'a and andseparating the latter.
In the bearings 5 a trunnion 8 is so mounted that it may rotate about its axis orrnove sub-V stantially at right angles thereto. Extending radially from the trunnion v8 throughV the slot 3a is a holding member 9, the innerextremityV of which is preferably al driving fitV into an aperture l0 formed in the said trunnion. The wall I@which `constitutes thelower extremity ofthe slot 3a `forms a stop to limit the downward` swing of the member 9 so that it cannot assume too'vertical a position platewhen` detached from the in which its holding effect would be materially lessened.
The trunnion 8 is circular in cross section and has portions cut therefrom towards its extremities thereby forming aligned flat faces 11 thereon. These fiat faces are so disposed relative to the member 9 that when the latter is 'upwardly directed, as shown in Figure 3, they llie substantially parallel with the extension 4 so that the trunnion 8 may Athen drop between the saidextensionv and the outwardly flexed plate portion 3, and with the completely circular central portion of the said trunnionresting partly in the extension slot 7 The axial length of the completely circular'central trunnion portion is somewhat greater tha-n the width of the slot 3a so that when the member 9 and trunnion 8 assume'the position shown'in Figures 1 and 2 portions of the completely circular trunnion port-ion rest against both bearings 5 and L prevent the excessive play which the trunnion would otherwise be permitted.
Substantially centrally of the width of the plate 1 and above the flexed portion 3 is another forwardly flexed plate portion 14 which forms a recess between its' inner face and the door A. At'the top of this flexed plate portion and extending downwardly for a portion of its height an opening 16 is formed therethrough. On the holding member 9 is a projection, which is preferably wedgeshaped, and extends substantially parallel with the said member. This projection mayv be secured to the member 9- in any desired manner, in the present instance a pin 18 is formed integral with the said projection and extends through an opening 19 formed in the member 9.
When the holding member 9 is in its downturned operating position the trunnionS is forced upward by the ground indicated at B, thus lifting the trunnion in its bearings so that it contacts the tops of the latter. When the door A is closed and the member 9 not in use the trunnion 8 is turned so that-the memberV projects upwardly. When the flat faces 11 of the trunnion 8 are parallel with the extension 4 and in alignment with the outer face of the latter the trunnion 8 drops into v the lower portions of the bearings and then the projection 17 enters the plate opening 16 and passes into the recess 15. The holding `member 9 is then retained in its upward position until it is lifted so that its projection 17 is released from the recess 15 and the flat trunnion faces 11 are raised'above the plate extension 4.
Vhile in the foregoing thefprefer-red embodiment of the invention has been described and shown, itis understood that the construction is susceptible to such alterations and modifications as fall within the scope of thev appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
