UMBRELLA-RUNNER.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT ARDREY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrella-Runners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specifications and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of an umbrella or parasol runner which is adapted to be rotated on the notched collar so as to engage with pins on the stick, thus retaining the runner in the open and closed posit-ions of the umbrella or parasol and dispensing with the spring-catch heretofore employed.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an umbrella-runner embodyingjmy invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan View thereof.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates an umbrella-runner, and B designates the notched collar thereof, the runner-tube being adapted to rotate within said collar, to which the stretchers are attachable, as usual in such cases, said collar having on its inner periphery'a slot 0, with which the slot D of the runner-tube may be placed in and out of register,

said slot D extending entirely through the runner. In order to retain the collar in position and permit the rotation of the runnertube therein, there is formed on the end of the collar a flange E, which freely embraces the upper face of the collar at the inner periphery thereof, the runner-tube having also formed on it below the collar a bead or knurl F, which freely encircles the under face of the collar at the inner periphery thereof, so that while the runner-tube is j ournaled within the collar the latter is prevented from disconnection therefrom.

It will be seen that when the runner-tube is rotated or turned in one direction the slot D thereof registers with the slot C of the collar. The umbrella, if closed, may now be opened as usual, the runner passing the upper pin of the stick until it is above the same, when the runner-tube is rotated so that its slot D leaves the slot 0 of the collar, thus closing the bottom of the slot of the runner and causing the pin to engage with the bottom edge of the solid portion of .the runner, whereby the runner is locked and prevented from being lowered, the umbrella thus being held in open position.

When the umbrella is to be closed, the runner-tube is rotated so as to cause the slot thereof to register with the slot of the collar, when the runner may lower with the closing of the umbrella, the runner readily passing the upper pin, there being no obstacle to the same in the slot D. When the runner has moved down to full extent, the tube is again rotated to close the slot D, whereby the lower pin engages with the upper edge of the solid portion of the runner, thus again locking the latter and preventing the umbrella from being opened.

In order to limit the rotation of the runnertube in either direction the upper edge of the same is formed with a slot G, which latter receives a lug or pin H on the collar, whereby when the runner-tube is rotated the wall of the slot abuts against the lug as a stop, thus preventing further rotation of the tube.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An umbrella-runner having a collar provided with a slot on the inner periphery thereof and a lug, and a runner-tube which is freely rotatable in said collar, said tube having a vertical slot adapted to be placed in and out of register with the slot of the collar, and also having a slot for engagement with said lug,

a pin on the stick being movable through the slots of said parts when in alignment, said parts all being combined substantially as described.
