ATENT @FFEE COMBINATION CALL BELL AND BLOTTER HOLDER Application filed June 1, 1931.
My present invention has reference to a call-bell and blotter holder and my object is to provide a desk implement of this character which shall be of-a simple construction, ornamental in appearance, small so as to oocupy but little space on a desk, which may be readily used as a call-bell or a blotter holder and wherein the bell provides the handle for the blotter holder.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement herein after described and definitely claimed.

In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a block that has a concaved face over which is arranged a blotter pad 2. The pad has its ends bent over the flat top of the block and these ends are designed to be contacted by a presser or clamp plate 3.
Arranged centrally over the plate 8 there is a wooden head 4 that carries a screw 5 which passes through a central opening in the clamping plate 3 and is screwed in an opening that enters from the top of the blotter carrying block 1.
On the top of the block 1 there is arranged a ring member 6 covered by a disc cap 7 through which pass bolts 8 that enter the head 4. The disc Y provides the lower memher of the frame for the clockwork, the upper member or disc being indicated by the numeral 9, the disc 9 being held in spaced relation to the disc 7 by suitable spacer elements 10. On the under face of the disc 9 there is supported the winding spring 11 of Serial No. 541,484.

The inner end of the spring is bent or offset and enters a slot in a sleeve 12 that passes through the plate or disc 9 and rests on the plate or disc 7. g has fixed thereon a ratchet wheel 13 that is en: gaged by a spring influenced pawl 14 carried by a gear 15 on the under face of the spring 11. The outer end of the spring 11 is fixed to one of the spacer elements 10.
The wheel 15, when the spring expands turns a plurality of gears which are, of course, arranged upon suitable shafts, and on one of these shafts, indicated for distinction by the numeral 16, there is fixed an escape-r ment Wheel 17 that engages with the pallets 18 on the bifurcated and inner and pivoted end of a rod 19 upon whose outer end there is fixed a hammer head 20.
The sleeve 12 The sleeve 12 preferably has its outer end enlarged, the said enlargement being threaded and screwed on threads in the inwardly rounded central and depending porti0n'21 of the bell 22; The bell is preferably shaped as disclosed by Figure 1 of the drawing, that 7 5 is, its outer face is rounded downwardly from its center, as at 23, and its sides are rounded inwardly, as at 24. The bell thus affords a grip whereby the blotter may be rocked in the blotting operation; There is centrally passed through the sleeve 12 a rod 25 for a push button 26 that is received in the concaved portion 21 of the blotter. The rod 25 passes through the disc T and'has its lower end widened or thickened to contact with the lever 27. The lever has I a hinged spring connection 28 with the lower face of the disc 7 so that the lever is influenced toward the disc, but there is arranged upon the, lever a lug or teat 29 that contacts with the said disc 1 lor limiting the swinging of the lever in the direction of the disc. The lever on its outer end is formed with an offset portion in the nature of a finger 30 and this finger 30 passes through a suitable opening in the disc 7 and is designed to be arranged against one side of the arm 19 for the hammer 20 to prevent the swinging of the hammer.
As stated, the bell provides the handle for the block. The operator, pressing the push button will swing the lever to bring its linger out of contact with the arm 19 of the hammer,
permitting the wheel 17 to alternately engage with the pallets l8 and the end of the said -hammer rod and thereby alternately swing the hammer rod on its pivot 81 so that the bell will be sounded. The spring is wound by simply turning the bell in a clockwise direction and by turning the bell in an anticlockwise direction the same can be removed from the clock mechanism. It is to be-noted that the push button is at all times arranged below the outer surface of the bell so that the same will not be contacted when the blotter is used.
The head at is hexagonal in plan as disclosed by the dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawing so that the same may be gripped either by the hand of the operator or by the jaws of a wrench. and turned otl of the screw 5. When thus removed from the blotter the de vice may be employed as a call bell. The screw 5 it is to be noted is headless and has its upper end threaded through a nut which is let in the top of the wooden head l. It is also to be understood that the finger 30 of the lever 27, when in normal position prevents the spring from uncoiling and the pawl 14thas its active end always in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 13 by the spring which is attached thereto and to the wheel 15.
It is thought the construction and advantages of the improvement will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates so that further detailed description will not be required. Obviously I do not wish to be restricted to the precise details herein shown and described and, therefore, hold myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within. the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A call bell, including a ring member designed to be positioned on the head of a blotter holding block, a clockwork having its frame resting on the ring member and secured to the head, a tubular member extending through the frame and through the central portion of the spring of the clockwork and said spring having one end secured to the tubular member and its other end secured to the frame, a gear for the clockwork turned by the spring thereof and operating the remaining gears of the clockwork, a pivoted hammer operated by the clockwork, a ratchet wheel fixed on the tubular member, aspring influenced pawl carried by the gear to engage with the ratchet wheel, a bell surrounding the clockwork and having its top bulged inwardly and connected with the tubular member, a push button in the bulged portion having a stem projecting through the tubular member and through the lower portion of the frame of the clockwork and having its lower portion enlarged, a pivotally supported spring influenced lever on the under face of the clockwork frame, a teat on the lever for limiting the swinging thereof toward the frame and a finger on the lever extended through the frame to contact with the hammer to prevent the operation thereof and the operation of the clockwork.
2. A call bell designed to be supported upon a blotter holding block, including spaced upper and lower connected discs comprising a clockwork frame and one of the lower discs resting on the ring and secured to the block, a sleeve journaled in the frame and carrying a ratchet wheel and to which sleeve one end of the clockwork spring is fixed, a gear driven by the spring and carrying a pawl to engage with the ratchet wheel, a bell surrounding the frame and having a central depressed portion in which the sleeve is secured, a push button having a stem guided through the sleeve and lower disc, a spring influenced lever on the under face of the lower disc on which the stem rests, an offset finger on the lever passing throu h the lower disc, a bell hammer operated by tlie clockwork and said finger normally engaging the hammer to prevent the operation thereof.
