My invention relates to improvements in tourniquets.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel tourniquet, which is simple, cheap, strong, durable, not likely to get out of order, which can be easily and quickly applied to or removed from a body member, such as a leg or arm, which will securely hold, and which is not liable to pinch the skin.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. l is a plan view of my improved tourniquet with the cam member shown in the released position.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved tourniquet shown applied to a body member, with the cam member shown clamping the strap, a part being broken away.
Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the body or a connecting member comprising, as shown a plate having an arcuate inner side portion 2 adapted to bear against a body member, as an arm 3, Fig. 3.
The connecting member has an. outwardly turned end portion at which has strap guiding means, as a transverse slot 5, the latter being disposed at the outer side of the arc of the curved inner side portion The other end portion of the connecting member is provided with a transverse slot 6 through which extends one end portion of a flexible member, as a strap 7, said end portion being doubled on itself with its parallel portion fastened, as by sewing together.
The strap 7 is adapted for extension at its free end portion through the slot 5 in which it is adapted for travel.
The connecting member 1 is provided at its outer side and opposite edges respectively, and opposite to said arcuate inner side 2, with two cars 8 to and between which is pivoted a cam member having an operating radial handle 9 and having a cam 10, the latter, when the handle is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, permitting the free travel between saidcamlO and the outer side of the connectingmember 1 of the strap'7. The strap 7 is adapted, as shown in Fig. 3, to em brace and compress a body member, such as the arm 3, for stoppingat this point the flow of blood.
After thestrap has been made to embrace the body member, and is drawn with sufiicient tightness through the slot 5 and between the cam 10 and the connecting member 1, the cam member handle 9 is swung to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby causing the cam 10 to tightly releasably clamp the strap 7 against the outer side of the connecting member 1, so that the strap can not slip and reduce its pressure on the body member.
To release the strap, the handle 9 is swung to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, after which the strap 7 may be retracted through the slot- 5 and the tourniquet thus released for removal from the body member.
By having the portion at of the member 1 outwardly turned and its inner side convex and the slot 5 disposed at the outer side ofthe arc of the curved inner side 2 of the connecting member, the skin of the body member 3 is not liable to be pinched between the strap and the connecting member portion 4, where the strap passes through the slot- 5.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
lVhat I claim is 7 1. A tourniquet comprising a connecting member adapted to have its inner side bear against a body member and having an outwardly turned end portion having guiding means, a flexible member adapted to embrace and compress said body member and attached at one end to said connecting member and having its free end portion having running engagement with said guiding means, and a cam member having a smooth periphery and pivoted to said connecting member so as to freely swing to and remain in a release position to which it may be swung and adapted to be swung to and from a position in which it will clamp said flexible member against said connecting member.

A tourniquet comprising a connecting member having a position provided with a concave arcuate inner side adapted to bear against a body member and having an outwardly turned end portion convex on its inner side and provided with guiding means disposed at the outer side of the are. of said inner side, a strap. attached at, one end to said connecting member and extending through and adapted for running in said. slot, and a cam member pivoted to said connecting member so as to, swing freely to and remain in a release position to which it may be swung and having a cam: having a Smooth peripheryadapted to releasabl-y press the free end portion 0t said strap against said connecting member and having an operating handle by which the cam member may be swung to and from the pressing position.
