NIKALAI HILL, Olli` MELLEN, WISCONSIN.
MOP-CLOTH HOLDER.
Application led April 5, 1922.
To all, whom t may concern Be it known that l, NIKALAI HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mellen, in the county olf Ashland, State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Mop-Cloth Holders; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mops and particularly to clamps for holding the cloths thereof.
One object of the invention is to provide a clamp including a pair of toothed jaws, with novel and eiiective means for drawing the jaws together, in gripping relation to a cloth, and means for locking the holding means to prevent accidental disengagement thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent 'from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
ln the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a mop head made in accordance with the present invention, the jaws of the holder being shown in open position.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the device, in the position ot' Figure 1, looking into the open jaws thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the clamping jaws and locking means, with the jaws in closed position.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a portion of the handle, which has the ferrule 11 secured thereon, and which terrule is provided with the longitudinally extending parallel blades 12, for the reception therebetween oit the stem 13 oi the stationary jaw 14, ot the holder. This jaw is approximately crescent shaped. and extends transversely of the outer end of the stem 13, the outer convex edge tace of the jaw being serrated, as shown at 15. A second crescent-shaped jaw 16, has one end pivotally connected to one end of the iXed jaw 14, as shown at 17, and on its othen end there is pivotally mounted a wire loop 18. lt will be noted that the concave edge Serial No. 549,935.
face of the jaw 16 is directed for cooperation with the convex edge face of the jaw 14, to
clamp a mop cloth therebetween, the jaw 16 lfiaving serrations 19 along its concave edge ace.
Pivotally mounted on the other end of the fixed jaw 14 is a lever 20, the inner, or pivotal end of which is formed with a hook 21, which, when the loop 18 is engaged on the lever, and the lever swung over toward the stem of the jaw 14, will pull the loop, and also the pivoted jaw 16 toward the jaw 14, the loop iinally resting within the hook above the unserrated edge tace of the jaw 14. Bent over from the unserrated edge of the lever-carrying end ot' the jaw 14, is a tab or tongue 22, past which the bill of the hook 21 snaps, as the lever is moved into jaw drawing position, for the purpose oif engagement with said bill hook, to hold the same against swinging back, and releasing the jaw 16, from gripping relation to the mop cloth.
To release the lever from the tongue 2L, it is necessary to move the lever laterally, so that the bill will pass outwardly beyond the tip of the tongue, when the lever may be swung over, into the position of Figure 1, thus permitting the jaw 14 to be swung away from the jaw 16, and release the cloth, trom between the jaws.
That is claimed is:
A mop cloth clamp comprising a pair ot' jaws pivotaly connected at one end, a lever pivotally mounted on the other end ot one of the jaws and having a hook on its pivotal. portion, a pivoted loop on the end of the other jaw corresponding to the lever end of the first jaw :for engagen'ient on the lever and movement into embracing relation to the said end of the .first jaw when the lever is swung on its pivot, and a detent on the first jaw ttor engagement by the bill of the hook to prevent displacement oie the lever from locked position.
ln testimony whereof, l aliix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
NIKALAI HILL.
`Witnessesz MARGARET Mr HooHrnLD'r, W. J. CovnLY.
