cn'nsrnn ronrscn, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS I GAME sconmc nnvrcn Application filed October 11, 1930. SerialNo. 487,952. g z
This invention relates to a gamescoring device; and more particularly to a device ar-' ranged for conveniently and quickly keeping score in a game which is played with an instrument having .a rod-like part or shaft,
. like a golf club.
One of the main objects of this inventionisi to provide a scoring device which is arranged 1 to be mounted on the shaft of an instrument ing the construction of said shaft or any part 7 'j of the instrument, and so that the device can also be readily detachedtherefrom when it is not desired.
A further object is to provide such a device whereby a score card is carried in ahand-y position so that the scores can be readily marked thereon, and so that said card can also be readily removed and replaced by a new one.
A still further object is to provide a score card having notches in itsmarginal portion,
"T to aid inreadily mounting and retaining the card in position on suitable supporting means therefor.
These and other objects and advantages are attained with this invention, as will become apparent from the following description,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Fig. 1 is a new of a golf club having my invention mounted in position on the .shaft' 1? thereof. A
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my scoring device, mounted on a shaft portion of a golf'club.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device, taken on line 3-3 of "7 Fig. '2.
Fig. i is an inverted plan view of the scoring devi ce.
Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical cross-sectional views, taken respectively through lines.
and 6-6 of Fig. 3.
i Fig. 7 is a broken view of the form'ofscore. card arranged for use with my invention.
The present invention "is particularly adapted and arranged for attachment to the shaft or rod-like part ofan instrument with which the game is played, like. the shaft 8 of a golf club 9., and it is positioned sothat. it is always ready at hand to have thescores' quickly and conveniently marked or recorded v thereon. a I
The accompanying drawing illustrates my game scoring device in a certain form of construction, and this form comprises a frame 10, having a table-like top portion or support. ing portion 11, for supporting a score-receiv-= ing member, as a score card 12 thereon. Lugs or holding fingers 13 are extended upwards-f f gom the ends of'the frame and have'their ends 13' extending inwardly over said top portion 11 while the scoring'membe'ror card 12 isv preferably provided with notches 1a, in
the marginal portion, as best shown in Fig.- 7., therewith providingextending portions15, at the sidesofsaid notches, so;that theserportionslfi embrace the lug-13, and the lug ends 13- overlap the card, whereby the card is held securely in position but permits conven ient removal thereof for-replacing i-t by anew card. Suitable legend 1.6 provided on said card, to adapt it for readily'keeping the score during the golf game. A
The frame 10 is, provided with means'f'or mounting it on the instrument which is used in playing the game.,.as on thejshaft '8, of the golf club, and preferably on. the-side opposite the head 17 so. that when. the weight of the head swingsit. downwards while the {club is being held in the hand, this scoring'device will be automatically positioned-on thelupward-side, as indicated .inFig. lof thedrawing, and it is'thus conveniently at hand so that the score can be readily entered or recorded thereon and may also be readily observed. Said mountingmeans comprises. a pair of bands. or clamping members 18, which are arranged to embrace-the shaft 8., the two end portions 19 of each bandxbeing preferably overlapped, as" shown. A screw 20 extends through the top-portion 11,? continues:
ing the scores on the cards cord is secured to a roller or drum 30, preferably of fibre, which-is mounted on a shaft tween an end shoulder 22,jand an intermediate shoulder 23, and a pair of lips or flanges 24: which connect said shoulders, all depending from said top portion 11; and said screw portions.
By tightening the pair of screws 20, the bands 18 will be drawn tightly uponthe shaft 8, and press said shaft firmly against the bottom parts of shoulders 22 and 23, thereby securely and positively holding this device golf club therebetween, and adjusting means in the desired position on the shaft.
The elements or means for'recording or marking the score on the score card, in the present fo'r'n ofimy invention, comprises a 1 marking element 27, which is shown in the form of apencil hereimand maybe in any suitable'form for writing or properly mark Means is provided for mounting and retaining the pencil or marking element 27 on the device, so thatit will always be ready at hand, and thismeans preferably comprises a cord or flexible means 28, which is secured atone end to the pencil, as bymeans of a 7 split ring =29, which is set into a peripheral groove on said-pencil, to provide a smooth.
exterior for the pencil. The' oth'er endof said so' that-it can slide androtate thereon. U The shaft and the roller thereon are-mount.-
'ed in a housing 32,' provided'between the V shoulders 23, and flanges 3,3 which depend fromv the .top portion 11 and in line with flangesQt. Said shaft 31 has its ends set in notches provided in said shoulders 23, and
is held in place by suitable plugs 34:," which are forced in said notches beneath saidends. A coil spring .35 is mounted on said shaft and has one end attachedto said roller30, and
its other end is'suitably held or-bra'ced, so that the spring will automatically wind the cord on the roller and will'draw the pencil into one of the dished or curved parts 36,
, which are provided ;at the outer sides of flanges 33, and closely beneath the top por-- tion 11 of the device. Slots 37 are preferably provided ineach flange 33, for the cord to pass through in order to properly seat the pencil in either one of parts. 36.
The device ismounted in position on the golf club, so that when said club is supported in the hand and the head 17, by its weight,
moves downwardly, this device will be posi-;
tioned upwards and conveniently for marking the scores on the score card. The pencil is also positioned so as to be ready at hand, and to be conveniently drawn outwardly from the device for marking-- the score on thescore card, thereby tension'ing the" spring so that the latter will automatically draw the seats or dished ly returning said elementin said seat.
the cord on the roller and the pencil back in position when the pencil is released. The
score card is also handily positioned on the top part 11, and can be readily flexed and removed therefrom and a new one substituted therefor, the notches at its ends adapting it particularly for this form of my invention.
