My invention relates to machines wherein a gelatinized sheet adapted to be used in il'laklllg copies on the hectograph principle is made in long lengths and adapted to be wound from spindle to spindle over an impression bed from which copies may be made on the well-known hectograph principle.
The machine is composed primarily of a base bed frame in which there is provided means for holding spindles at each end thereof and an impression bed over which the gelatin pad sheet is trained and exposed for copy purposes and mounted on this frame in a manner to be moved back and forth over the impression bed there is an impression carriage carrying a platen roll adapted to lay the material in the form of paper or other suitable material down upon the gelatin pad and remove the same therefrom in the service of making hectograph copies.
The objects of the invention are the improvement in the details of construction and the mechanism for operating the machine to make it more convenient for the operator, to increase the efficiency of the machine and to secure a better register of the duplicate copies on the gelatin pad from which the copies are taken.
One of the principal objects of the inven- 0 tion is to provide desirable means for revolving the platen roll in all positions of its ser ice in the machine.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a means for raising the impression carriage away from the impression bed to facilitate the removal and entrance of fresh sheets of gelatin pads.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for the winding mechanism for winding the gelatin pad sheet in either direction over the impression bed of the main frame.

The machine is provided with any suitable frame here shown as being supported on the legs or feet 1 supporting side frame members 2 and 3, 2 being the left side frame member and 3 the right side frame member (see Fig. 11) Each of these side frame members have upon their outer margins a flanged rib 4- (see Fig. 3). The left side frame member is provided with a cover plate 5 (see Figs. 2 and 11) and the side frame members 2 and 3 are tied across at the bottom by the cross girder bars 6 (see Figs. 9, and 12). The side frame members 2 and 3 are connected across at the top by the bars 7, 8 and 9 which have downward extending legs 10 bolted or riveted to the side frame members 2 and 3. The bars 7 8 and 9 support an impression bed plate 11 over which is trained a felt or elastic blanket 12. The felt 12 is turned over on all sides of the bed plate 11 and at each end of the bed plate lying upon the bars 7 and 9 there are angle bars 13 the upstanding ends 14 of which are rounded off to provide curved edges and a trim for the end of the felt covering of the bed to sustain the frictional wear of the gelatin pad 15 being that portion of the said sheet which is trained down from the impression bed at the region of the spindles upon which the gelatin pad sheet is wound. That portion of the gelatin pad which is in service in making the copy at any given time is indicated by 16.
The gelatin pad is mounted on a spindle 17 at the rear end of the machine and on a spindle 18 at the front end of the machine which spindles are mounted and supported in the frame members 2 and 8 by any suitable mechanism but as relates to the frame member 3 here shown as having fixed bars 19 (see Figs. 9, 10 and 11) fixed to the frame memher 3 and spring actuated latches 20 which embrace the round trunnion ends of the spindles the bars 19 having notches open at the bottom adapted to receive the round trunnion ends of the spindles 17 and 18 while the latches 20 are adapted to hold these round trunnion ends into the said notches in the bars 19.
The spindles 17 and 18 are mounted in the left side of the main frame in side frame member 2 by having the gudgeons of the spindles enter into a short shaft 49 at the front of the machine and 50 at the rear of the machine. The flat portion of the spindle gudgeon indicated by 51 in Fig. 11 engages a slot in the end of the shaft 49 and thus controls the movement of the spindle as the shaft- 49 is controlled. A like construction is provided for the spindle 17 by the short shaft 59 (see Fig. Both the shafts 19 and 50 are revolved at the desired intervals through the medium of a hand wheel 52 provided with a handle 53 the hand wheel 52 being mounted on a shaft 54 carried in a bearing in a block 55 which block is mounted in between the side frame member 2 and the" cover plate 5 and has an extension 56 of the bearing for the shaft 54 extending outside of the cover pla e 5 (see Fig. 1). This extension 56 passes through an aperture 57 in the plate 5 see Fig. 2) and the block 55 is hinged at 58 into the side frame 2 and the cover plate 5 and the lower end of the block 55 is hinged at 59 to a link 60 ee Fig. 3) connected at 79 to an arm 61 of a little rocker shaft 62 which extends outside the cover plate 5 and is provided with a hand lever and a hand hold 6 f (see Fig. 2). The rocker shaft 62 being adapted to move the block 55 and carry with it the hand wheel 52 and a gear 69 mounted on the shaft 54 to and from if an engagement with the gear (55 on the shaft 49 and to and from a gear 66 on a shaft 67 upon which shaft 67 there is a sprocket wheel 68 over which a chain 70 trained and extends hack and runs over a sprocket 71 on a stud shaft 72 and the sprocket 71 is fixed to a gear 73 which in turn is adapted to engage the gear 74 on the aforementioned shaft 50. Thus in the position of Fig. 3 the revolving of the hand wheel 52 which revolves the shaft 54 brings about the revolution of the short shaft 50 carrying with it the spindle 17 located at the outer end of the machine. The stud shaft 72 is fixed into and carried by a block lever 63 is thrown over from the position of Figs. 1 and 2 to bring the gear wheel 69 in engagement with the gear wheel 65 it likewise frees the gear 69 from the gear (36 and through the medium of the block 75 disen- At the lower end of the block 75 gages the gear 73 from the gear 74 and thus releases the shaft- 50 from being driven by the hand wheel 52 and at the same time places the shaft 49 under the control of the hand wheel 52.
A tightener for the chain 70 is provided in the form of a little roller 80 mounted on a stud in an arm 81 hinged at 82 in the side frame member 2 and the cover plate 5 and a small spring 83 holds the tightener taut onto the chain 70. On the shaft 19 there is the ratchet 84 controlled by a pawl 85 on a pin 86 the pawl 85 being automatically held to the ratchet 84 by the over-balancing weight of its outer end on the pawl over the pin 86. A cam block 87 on a little shaft 88 which shaft extends out through the cover plate 5 and is provided with a hand lever 89 permits the operator to disengage the pawl 85 from the ratchet 84 and hold the same disengaged whenever it is desired to let the shaft 49 and the spindle 18 which it controls to be revolved freely in either direction. A similar construction is shown at the outer end of the machine being the ratchet 9O controlled by the pawl 91 on a pin 92 and this pawl likewise is controlled by gravity weight of its lover end and is disengaged by a pin 93 extending through a slot in the side frame member 2 and connected to a link 94 on the inside of the side frame member 2 which link extends hand wheel 52 to control the spindle 18 and wind thereon the gelatin pad sheet from the spindle 17 and thus when the mechanism is in these positions the chain 7 and the gears 66 and 73 will be idle the gear 73 being disengaged from the gear 74 allowing the shaft 50 to be revolved freely save only as to the control by the pawl 91. Thus the operator may by hand knobs 6 1 and 99 set the mechanism to cause the hand wheel 52 to revolve positively either the shaft 19 or 50 as he desires permitting him to wind the gelatin pad sheet to and from either spindle 17 or 18, as desired, forward or backward over the impression bed 11.
At the top of the frame and on each side thereof there are rack bars 21 best observed in cross section in Fig. which rack bars 21 are grooved at 22 to rest down over upon the tops of the side frame members 2 and 3 and these bars have rac; gear teeth 23 integral with the main body of the bars 21. The connection of these teeth with the main body of the bars 21 is in the region indicated by 24 of Fig. 5 since the rack teeth are cut clear through leaving an open space between the teeth in the region of 25. A section line which would cut through the body of the teeth would show a shaded portion not divided by the short lIne 24 of Fig. 5. This clearance space between the teeth out clear through leaving the rack teeth open at the bottom is indicated by the space 26 shown in dotted lines in Fig. at, the line being also dotted in this Fig. 4.
On the top and inside of the main body portion of the rack bars 21 there is an angle bar 27 the upstanding flange 28 of whf ch furnishes a wall for the inside edge of the teeth 23 of the rack bars. At the outside of the racl: teeth 23 of the bars 21 there are the rail bars 29 secured by the screws 30 (see Figs. 2 and 3) which wall in the other side of the rack teeth 23 and at the same time furnish traclrways for wheels mounted in an impression carriage that ride upon the rails 29 and thus support the impression carriage on the bars 21. The bars 21 are hinged by the hinge pins 31 on each side of the machine to levers 32, 33 and 3 1 mounted on the crossshafts 35 and 36 as relates to the levers 32 and and on stud hinge pins 37 as relates to the levers 34. Keeper lugs 38 secured to the angle bars 27 (see Fig. 9) furnish bearings for the inside ends of the hinge pins 31. Levers-32- and 33 are provided with extensions 39 in which are hinge pins 40 connected to peculiarly shaped linlrs 4:1 one on each side of the frame for the purpose of adding to the simultaneous movement of the levers 32 and 33 since those levers are fixed solidly to the shafts 35 and 36 and by their hinge pin connections to the bars 21 the bars 21 on each side will function in the form of a parallel ruler whenever the shafts 36 or 35 are revolved within the permissible movements of the levers 32 and 33. On the right side of the frame and on the outside thereof there is the lever 42 having the handle 43 (see Fig. 11) fixed to the shaft 36 whereby the operator may rock the shaft 36 and lift the bars 21 free from their seats on the side frame members 2 and 3. T he maximum height at which this lift may be secured by the said mechanism is ind'cated by Fig. 10 and in this position the impression carriage is lifted above and clear of the impression bed lifting the platen roll and all the connected parts of the carriage sufliciently clear from the bed 11 and gelatine pad 16 to permit the entrance of one of the spindles 17 and 18 to be trained over the bed and to the spindle positions at ei her end of the machine even though the impression carriage may be located at any position on the bars 21. However Figs. 9 and 10 indicate the position of the impression carriage at the front end of the machine.
The impression carriage impresses the pa per onto the gelatine portion 16 on the impression bed 11 through the medium of a rubber faced platen roller 100 carried by the carriage and the carriage itself is provided with a frame having end plates 101 at the left side of the carriage and 102 at the right side and these end plates are connected across by a girder plate 103 having a downwardly extending flange 1041. The cross girder 103 also performs the function of the paper guide directing the paper to the platen roll 100 (see Fig. 6) the paper being indicated by 105. The front end of the carriage frame is connected across by a rod 106 connected by the little brackets 107 to the plates 101 and 102.
The impression carriage is supported on a cross-shaft 108 at the rear of the machine mounted to revolve in ball bearings enclosed by a keeper plate 109 and fixed on this shaft at each end of the shaft being each side of the carriage frame of the machine there are gears 110 which are engaged by the rack teeth 23 of the rack bars 21 on the sides of the frame of the machine. Small rollers or wheel 111 run loosely on the shaft 108 and are outside of the gears 110 and roll upon the rails 29 and thus hold the gears 110 to proper pitch line association with the rack teeth 23 of the rack bars 21. At the front end of the carriage on each side thereof there are mounted gears 112 on stud shafts 11.3 and also another set of the wheels 111 which also roll on the rails 29. The gears 112 are simply idle gears their teeth running in between the flanges 28 of the angle bars 27 and the side rails 29 hold the carriage from sidewise displacement on the rack bars 21 and the same is true as relates to the gears 110. The gears 110 owing to the fact that they are fixed to the shaft 108 necessarily hold the carriage squarely to the frame owing to the racks making the carriage move forward and back in square relations to the impression bed 11. Extending across the carriage frame there is a shaft 11 1 upon which there is fixed at the right side of the carriage the gear 115 which is engaged and driven by one of the gears 110 being the one at the right side of the machine. The shaft 11 1 extends outside of the side plate 102 of the carriage and has mounted thereon a flange pulley 116 which engages and drives a belt 117 (see Figs. 1 and 4;) which is trained over a tightener pulley 118 and trained over idle pulleys 119 and 120 the latter pulleys being mounted on short shafts 121 and 122 the outer ends of which are fixed into a bracket 123 the bottom 12% of which is fixed by the screws 125 to the lower edge of the side plate 102 of the carriage frame while the top portion of the bracket 123 is secured to the side plate 102 by means of the angle 120 (see 8 and 11) the latter being secured to the plate 102. The belt 117 after passing over the idle pulleys 119 and 120 is trained over a pulley 127 on the shaft 128 of the platen roll 100 and thus the belt 117 drives the platen roiier through the medium of the gears 110 and 115 whenever the carriage is moved backward and forward along the rack bars 21. The tightener pulley 118 (see Fig. 1-) is mounted on shaft 129 mounted in a supporting yoke 130 hinged at 131 to the side plate 102 of the carriage frame and the shaft 129 is likewise connected to a yoke 132 having a screw stud 133 extending through a small bracket 134 and provided with an adjusting nut 135 by which the tightener pulley 118 may be made to tighten the belt 117.
The shaft 128 of the platen roll 100 at the right die of the carriage is carried in a bearing 130 (see Figs. 13 and 1-1) in an arm 137 provided with a hub 1.38 on a rocker shaft 139. The bearing 130 is open at the bottom to facilitate the entry and removal of the platen roll 100 and its shaft 128 is held in service in this bearing by a hook 110 (see Fig. 13) hinged on a pin 1 11 in the arm 137 and the hook is held in place by a spring 112 wound upon a pin 111 and the ends of which engage the hook 140 and the arm 137. A. projection 113 permits the operator to release the hook 1-10 and thus releases the shaft 128 from the bearing 130.
The hul 138 of the arm 137 may revolve slightly on the rocker shaft 139 and the 1' of this revolution is controlled by a in block 115 which block is fixed e shaft 139 and the pin 1 1 1 extends through a hole 116 in a projection 117 on the hub 1.38 of the arm 137. The hole 1 1-0 being larger than the pin 11% allows a slight rotative movem nt of he hub 138 on the rocker shalt 139. ii coiled spring 118 is wound upon the rocker shaft 139 and one end of it is engaged in the hub 138 and the other end is ged in a collar 1-19 on the shaft 139 and Luis collar connected to be engaged in a fixed collar 150 on the shaft 139 through the medium of dental teeth 151 on each of the collars.
Thus by revolving the collar 149 the tension of the spring may be regulated to revolve the hub 138 the limit of the movement controlled by the relative size of the pin and the hole as before mentioned. The shaft 139 is provided with a trunnion journal 152 which is supported in a bearing pro ection 1533 of the bracket 123 and this for the said trunnion is open at one .c and 's clo ed by a block 15 1 held by 155 passing through slots in the block and into the projection 153. Thus by his the block 15 1 the trunnion 152 may .1 from the supporting projection e Fi 15).
riimilar construction is arranged for holding the left end of the platen roll 100 by an arm which has a closed bearing for a trunnion 157 on the end of the platen roll 100 (see Figs. and 7). This trunnion 157 is moved endwise in taking out the platen roll 100. The arm 150 is mounted on the shaft 139 at this left end of the carriage in thesame manner as the arm 137 is mounted as shown by Figs. 13 and 141, save only that the projection 158 and the hub 159 of the arm 156 is substantially like the projection 147 and hub 138 at the other side of the frame, excepting, lowever the projection 160 fixer on the 139 corresponds to the .rojection at the other end but extends high er up and has fixed thereon a ratchet block 161 by screws 162 and this ratchet block 161 is provided with teeth ihich are engaged teeth in a sliding block 163 both sets of teeth being indicated by 16 1 the arrangement being that when the platen roll 100 is down upon the gelatin the teeth in the block 163 engage the teeth in the ratchet block 161 and thus hold the platen roll down during the return of the carriage back toward home to insure the withdrawal of the paper from the gelatin pad. The shaft 139 at the left side of the carriage is provided with a trunnion corresponding to the trunnion 152 and this trunnion is provided with a bearing in a projection 165 in a bracket 166 fixed by an angle plate 167 (see Fig. 11) to the left end plate 101 of the carriage.
A block 168 (see Figs. 6 and 7 is secured to the projection 165 and is provided with stop pins 169 and 170. These pins are adapted to engage the projection 160 which is fixed to the shaft 139 and thus limit the rocking movement of the shaft in its final downward movement in the pressing of the platen roll 100 to the gelatin pad and prevent too great a lift of the platen roll when the platen roll is lifted free of the pad.
The shaft 139 is rocked in its movement by the hand lever 171 which is provided with a h and hold ball or other suitable handle 17 2 whereby the rocker shaft 139 may be operated by hand to raise and lower the platen roll in relation to the impression bed. lVhen the platen roll 100 is down upon the bed laying on the paper as indicated by Figs. 6 and, 7 and the paper is completely laid .down and then the carriage being withdrawn and taking the paper off from the platen roll, it is necessary and desirable to hold the platen roll down until the completion of the return movement thus withdrawing the paper back to the point of commencement of making copy and in order to do this the ratchet teeth 164- are engaged by similar teeth in the block 163 which thus holds the rocker shaft in position of Figs. 6 and 7. The block 163 is held in this engagement posit-ion by a spring 173 located underneath the bracket 166 and working against the angle 167 on one side and against a little block .17 1 which extends up through a slot in the bracket 166 and engages the block 163 and at the top of the block 174 there is a thumb knob 17 5 best shown in Fig. 11 with which the operator may press the block 163 to free its teeth from the teeth of the ratchet block 161 when ee- 182 fixed to the left rack bar 21 (see Figs. 2
and for a clearer illustration of the stop. Thus when the carriage is brought home for a new operation of copy the pin 181 against the stop 182 automatically withdraws the block 163 and frees the ratchet block 161 and permits the rocker shaft 139 then to be rocked raising the platen roll 100 as desired without interference of the teeth of the block 163.
The stop 182 is duplicated on the right side of the machine. The pin 181 of the lever 179 passes through a slot in the carriage plate 101 in order to be engaged by the stop 182. On each side of the impression carriage at the bottom edge of the plates 101 and 102 there is a stud bolt 183 which carr es rollers 18% which rollers engage the side rails 29 on the under edges thereof and thus holds the carriage down onto the rails 29 and on the inner side of these rollers 18% there are stop blocks 185 secured .to the plates 101 and 102 by the rivets or bolts 186 and the stud bolts 183 also assist in holding these stop blocks 185 (see Fig. Thus the stop blocks 1.85 abut against the stops 182 when the carriage is home to position of register the block 185 on the left side of the machine being slotted to admit the pin 181 of the lever 179.
A compression or clamping roller 187 (see Figs. 1, 1, 7 and .8) is mounted to be adapted to clamp the paper to the platen roll 100 and is mounted in hearings in lever bloc-ks 188 hinged at- 189 to blocks 190 secured to the girder plate 103 and the blocks 188 are provided with arms 191 in the ends of which are mounted stop screws 192 to limit the movement of the clamping roller 187 toward the platen roll 100. Hinged to the arms 191 at 193 there are bolts 194 upon which there are mounted springs 195 held and adjusted thereon by nuts 196 whereby he springs 195 will hold the compression roller 187 up against the platen roll 100 when the latter is down in position of engagement of paper with the gelatin pad sheet on the impression bed and the springs 195 furnish an elastic pressure for this purpose. Mounted in the rack bars 21 by hinge pins 197 (see Figs. 6 and 8) there are arms 198 which are connected to and support a margin bar 199 which furnishes a stop shoulder 200 against which the paper 105 is registered when the same is placed in the machine. This margin bar 199 may be rocked back to the dotted position shown in Fig. 6 whenever desired for any purpose.
:jlilLl A lateral paper guide is provided in the form of a plate 201 having a flange 202 against which the edge of the paper is placed for lateral adjustment when the same is fed into the machine and this plate 201 has turned over flange 203 through which there passes a thumb nut bolt 204 engaged in a slot 205 and the flange 10st of the cross girder 103. Thus the lateral guide flange 202 may be adjusted as desired to direct the paper to lateral position on the gelatin pad sheet on the impression bed. By reference to Fig. 4 it will be observed that the belt 117 is trained across the center of the trunnion 152 of the rocker shaft 139 as relates to both portions of the belt to pass through to or from the pulley 127 011 the shaft 128 of the platen roll 100. Owing to this location of the travel of the belt past the center of the pivot or trunnion 152 the raising and lowering of the platen roll 100 to permit the entry of the paper to the margin bar shoulder 200 and the clamping of the paper down onto the gelatin. pad sheet by the said platen roll no rotary movement of the platen roll is permitted so long as the carriage remains stationary as relates to traveling back and forth on the impression bed but owing to the gearing as previously described in engagement with the rack teeth of the rack bars 21 whenever the carriage is moved backward or forward the platen roll 100 is made to travel under the influence of the belt to harmonize exactly with the distance of the rolling contact of the platen roll with the surface of the impression bed.
This prevention of the revolution of the platen roll 100 as it impresses the paper down to contact with the gelatin pad insures a registration of the end of the paper 105 against the margin bar shoulder 200 and thus prevents errors in registration which is a great desideratum. Then on withdrawing the carriage back after the impression has been made the positive revolving of the platen roll 100 under the influence of the belt 117 insures the withdrawal of the paper from the sticky surface of the gelatin pad which is likewise a great desideratum as in the absence of such means of revolving this platen roll 100 outside of its simple contact with the paper on the impression bed, t ie paper will sometimes so stick to the gelatin pad that the friction of the platen roll only in contact with the bed is not sufiicient to keep it revolving and thus positively withdraw the paper from the gelatin but with the belt driven arrangement as herein shown the paper is always positively withdrawn from the gelatin pad regardless of the sticky nature of the pad.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a machine of the class described, a frame having an impression bed and means for holding spindles at each end of the bed which spindles are adapted to carry and have wound thereon elatin pad copy sheets of the hectograph type, side rails extending longitudinally of the said impression bed and adapted to support and carry an impression carriage, an impression carriage mounted to be carried by the said side rails and moved thereon backward and forward over the said impression bed, means for raising and lowering the said side rails with the carriage thereon in relation to the said bed to facilitate training over the said bed the said gelatin pad sheets.
2. In a machine of the class described, a frame provided with an impression bed and means at each end thereof for supporting and revolving gelatin pad spindles, a gelatin pad sheet trained from one spindle over the in1- pression bed to and upon another spindle, rails mounted on each side of the said impression bed and connected to the said frame by hinge connections and adapted to be raised in relation to the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said rails and adapted to be moved backward and forward over the said impression bed of the said frame.
3. In a machine of the class described, a frame supporting an impression bed and provided with means for holding spindles-1 at each end of the said bed, the said spindles adapted to carry and have wound thereon a gelatin pad sheet, side rails one on each side of the said bed provided with track\ a upon which an impression carriage is mounted an impression carriage mounted on the said trackways of the said side rails and the said. side rails connected by hinge connections to the said impression bed.
4:. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed mounted in a frame, means for holding spindles in the said frame adapted to carry a gelatin pad sheet that is trained from one spindle over the said bed to the other spindle, side rails one on each side of the said bed and adapted to be raised and lowered in relation to the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said side rails, rack gear teeth in the said side rails and gears mounted in the said impression carriage adapted to be engaged and revolved as the said impression carriage is moved along the said side rails and impression bed.
5. In a machine of the class described, a frame carrying an impression bed, means at each. end of said bed for supporting and revolving gelatin pad spindles, a gelatin pad sheet trained from one spindle over the impression bed to and upon another spindle, side rails one on each side of the said impression bed adapted to carry an impression carriage, the said side rails hinged in a manner to be raised and lowered in relation to the said bed, a platen roller carried in the said impression carriage and means for positively revolving the said platen roll as the same is moved along the said side rails.
6. In a machine of the class described, an
eeaere impression bed, a rack extending along the edge of the said impression bed, an impres sion Carriage mounted to travel backward and forward over the said bed and provided with a gear that is engaged and revolved by the said rack as the said carriage is moved backward and forward, a secondary gear en gaged by the said first mentioned gear and driven thereby, a pulley on the shaft of the said secondary gear, a platen roll mounted on a rocker shaft and said rocker shaft hinged in the frame of the said carriage and adapted to raise and lower the said platen roller in relation to the said bed, a pulley on the shaft of the said platen roll. idle pulleys mounted on each side of the axis of the center of the said hinge of the said rocker shaft with their edges closely approximating the center line of the said hinge axis, an idle tightener mounted on the said carriage. a flexible connection passing over the first mentioned pulley and over the said idle pulleys and over the said pulley on the said platen roll shaft and adapted to drive the said platen roll as the said carriage is moved backward or forward over the said bed.
7. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed. trackways on each side of the said bed. rack bars likewise on each side of the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said trackways adapted to be moved backward and forward over the said bed, said carriage provided with a cross-shaft upon which there is mounted wheels adapted to roll freely on the said cross shaft and to ride upon the aforementioned trackways, gears fixed to the said cross shaft and adapted to be engaged by the said rack [teeth of the said rack bars, a secondary cross-shaft mounted in the said impression carriage and having a gear fixed thereon and adapted to engage one of the gears of the aforementioned gears on the said first mentioned cross shaft, a pulley on the said secondary shaft and a platen roll carried in the said impression carriage, a pulley on the shaft of the said platen roll, co 7 n t f i l over the said first mentioned pu y and over the said pulley on the said platen roll shaft.
8. In a machine of the e s described, an impression bed, trackways on each side of the said bed. rack bars likewise on each side of the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said trackways adapted to be moved backward and forward over he said bed, said cai iage provided wi upon which there mounted to roll freely on the said crop upon the aforementioned track be engaged by the said rack eeth rack ars a so nu b i i l b c o lary cros" shaft nou in the said impression carriage and having M a gear fixed thereon and adapted to engage one of the gears of the aforementioned gears on the said first mentioned shaft, a pulley on the said secondary shaft and a platen roll carried in the said impression carriage, a pulley on the shaft of the said platen roll, a flexible connection trained over the said first mentiened pulley and over the said pulley on the said platen roll shaft, and means for tightening the said flexible connection.
9. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed, trackways on each side of the said bed and rack bars mount-ed on each side of the said bed, an impression carriage mounted to ride on the said trackways, the said impression carriage adapted to carry a platen roller, a rocker shaft mounted in the said carriage and carrying the said platen roller, a paper guide in the said carriage mounted at an inclined angle to the said inn ression bed and said rocker shaft and platen roll mounted in front of the said inclined paper guide and adapted to receive and press the paper down on the gelatin pad on the. said bed as the paper is directed underneath the said platen roll when the latter is in a raised position, a shaft mounted in said carriage and extending underneath the said paper guide having gears mounted thereon in fixed relationship adapted to be engaged by the rack teeth of the rack bars. a secondary shaft also extending underneath the said paper guide and across the frame of the said carriage and with a gear fixed on the said secondary shaft and this gear engaging one of the gears on the first mentioned shaft, a pulley on the said secondary shaft and a pulley on the shaft of the said 1 in roll, idle gears located in approxima tion to a vertical line which line passes through or near to the axis of the hinge of the said rocker shaft, a tightening pulley located nearby and underneath the said first mentioned pulley and means for adjusting the said tightener pulley in order to tighten the belt trained over the aforementioned pulleys, a belt trained over the said idle pulleys and over a pulley on the said platen roll shaft and trained underneath. the said tightener pulley whereby on the movement of the said arriage out and back over the said impression bed, the said platen roll is driven by the said pulleys in harmony in the direction of travel with the rolling contact of the said platen roll on the said bed.
10. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed, a frame for supporting the said bed, means at each end of said bed for supporting and revolving gelatin pad spindles, a gelatin pad sheet trained from one spindle over the impression bed to and upon another spindle, trackways located on each side of the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said trackways adapted to move over the said bed and carry a platen roller adapted to impress paper on the said bed, the said. trackways hinged to levers and CID said levers mounted on cross-shafts supported in the said bed and adapted to permit the said tracltways to be raised and lowcred in relation to the said bed on the said frame in a similar manner to that which is known as parallel ruler construction.
11. In a machine of the class described, a frame, an impression bed supported by the said frame, trackways hinged and connected to the said frame in a manner to be raised and lowered in relation thereof, an impression carriage carried by the said trackways provided with a platen roll adapted to impress paper onto the bed and supported in the said frame, stops for limiting the movement of the said carriage on the said trackways for registering position for placing the paper onto the impression bed.
12. In a machine of the class described, a frame, an impression bed supported by the said frame, trackways hinged and connected to the said frame in a manner to be raised and lowered in relation to the said frame, an impression carriage carried by the said trackways provided with a platen roll adapted to impress paper onto the bed and supported in the said frame, stops for limiting the movement of the said carriage on the said traclzways for registering position for placing the paper onto the impression bed, a margin bar supported on the said trackways adapted to be raised and lowered simultaneously with the said trackways in relation to the said bed.
13. In a machine of the class described, a frame supporting an impression bed, bars located on each side lengthwise of the said impression bed and connected to the said frame and adapted to be raised and lowered in relation thereto, an impression carriage mounted on the said bars adapted to be moved outward and back over the said impression bed as the said carriage is supported by the said bars, a margin bar for registering paper in relation to the said bed mounted on the said bars.
14. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a bed mounted on the said frame, means at each end of said bed for supporting and revolving gelatin pad spindles, a gelatin pad sheet trained from one spindle over the impression bed to and upon another spindle, side rails arranged along each side of the said bed and frame, means for raising the said side rails upwardly and longitudinally in relation to the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said rails and provided with a platen roller adapted to impress paper onto the said bed.
15. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a bed mounted on the said frame, side rails arranged along each side of the said bed and frame, means for raising the said side rails upwardly and longitudinally in relation to the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said rails and provided with a platen roller adapted to impress paper onto the said bed, a margin bar adapted to register the paper in relation to the said bed and supported onthe said side rails.
16. In a machine of the class described, a frame, a bed plate mounted on the said frame, side rails arranged along each side of the said bed plate and frame, means for raising the said side rails upwardly and longitudinally in relation to the said bed, an impression carriage mounted on the said rails and provided With a platen roller adapted to impress paper onto the said bed, a margin bar adapted to register the paper in relation to the said bed and supported on the said side rails, and said margin bar hinged to the said side rails and adapted to be rotated around the said hinge.
17. In a machine of the class described, a frame, an impression bed mounted on the said frame, side rails mounted on each side of the said frame, the said side rails adapted to be raised and lowered in relation to the said bed on the said frame, an impression carriage mounted to be moved along the said side rails, a platen roll mounted in the said impression carriage and adapted to impress paper onto the said impression bed, a margin bar mounted to register paper in relation to the position on the said bed, a stop fixed on the said rails and adapted to register the carriage on the rails in relation to the said margin bar.
18. In a machine of the class described, a frame, an impression bed mounted on the said frame, side rails mounted on each side of the said frame, the said side rails adapted to be raised and lowered in relation to the said bed on the said frame, an impression carriage mounted to be moved along the said side rails,
a platen roll mounted in the said impression 1 carriage and adapted to impress paper onto the said impression bed, a margin bar mounted to register paper in to position on the said bed, a stop fixed on the said rails and adapted to register the carriage on the rails in relation to the said margin bar, means provided on the said carriage for raising and lowering the said platen roll from and to the said bed, a ratchet locking means for hOlding the said platen roller down onto the said bed in the working period of its operation, means carried by the said carriage and adapted to abut against the said stop and release the said ratchet locking means to permit the raising of the said platen roll when the carriage is back against the said stop.
