My machine relates to that class of hectograph copying machines wherein a gelatin pad is made in sheet strip form and carried on spindles attached at each end of the sheet strip and the machine is provided with an impression bed and means for holding spindles at each end of the bed and drawing the gelatin padfrom one spindle over the bed and winding it on a spindle at the other end of the bed in connection with a movable carriage carrying an impression or platen roll adapted to impress paperon to the gelatin pad and thereby making copies on the hectograph method.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the machines of that class in general arrangement anddetails of parts et' the machine in a manner to do more ellicicnt work and to cause the machine to opwith greater precision in registering copies and. to regulate the pressure on the gelatin pad and to'provide inl one machine means of making what are known as'marginless copies along with copies'which have a somewhat wide margin on the edge of the sheet to be copied and in the peculiar ar- 35 mechanical experts and these features will be described in theV speciiications in more detail and set forth inthe claims.

Figure 9 is a similar View to that of Figure 8, but showing the carriage after it has started forward in inaling the copy. The position of the parts of Figure 9 is substantially what is shown in Figure 5.

Figure 10 is a similar view to that of Figure 8 on the saine section line, but shows the platen roll in an elevated position, being the position in which the paper is fed and registered ready for taking a copy.

In Figures 5, 6, 8 9 and 107 the machine is set for use with what is termed the standard margin bar and with this setting of the machine, the copy is not made clear to the end of the paper sheet, but a short distance is blank, being the distance across the width of the horizontal face of the margin bar.
Figure 11 shows the machine adjusted to use what is termed the marginless margin bar and the standard margin bar is revolved back out of the way in a neutral position, whereas in Figures 5. 6. 8, and 10, the marginless margin bar is in a neutral position and out of the way permitting the free use of the standard margin bar. r)The section shown in Figure 11 is looking from the right toward the left.
Figure 12 is a similar view to that of Figure 11, showing xthe platen roll pressing the paper sheet to contactwith the gelatin pad7 whereas in Figure 11 the paper has been 1nserted in position on the margin bar just prior to the descent of the platen roll and Figure 12 shows the platen roll down at the commencement of making a. copy.
Referring now to the drawings. the machine is provided with any suitable frame having feet or supporting standards 1, which are shown as being fastened by bolts 2 to side frames 3 and 4 of the machine. These side frames are connected together by angle strut braces` 5 and 6, see Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. These side frames are stiifened by being oft'- at 7 in the middle portion of the frame. There are also stiieuing flanges 8 at the bottom and narrow flanges 9 at the top. rllhe side frames and the angle strut braces form, as
were.l the main frame of the machine.
The gelatin pads used with the machine in the form `of sheets wound in rolls carried on spindles, the roll of gelatin pad being indicated by 1.0 and the spindles by 11.
The spindles 11 are provided with gudgeons 12. having trunuion pin ends 13 which are held and supported in the right side frame 3 by sprin arnis provided with perforations 15 into which the trunnion ends 13 engage-sce Figure 2A. The spring14is curved at its protruding end and is cut-in and embossed on the inclined lines 16 to form a guideway to assist in springing in the spindle ends into the perforaticus 15. rEhe other ends of the spring 14 are fastened by bolts or rivets 17 to the cross struts 5 and 6.
The other ends of the spindles 11 are carried in apertures and cross slots in the ends of short' shafts 18 and 19 at the left of the n'iaehine see Figure 2. The shafts 18 and 19 are carried at their inner endsrin perforations in housing blocks 2O and 21, the latter being secured by screws 22, see Figure 1,-to the left side frame 4. Mounted on the shafts 18 and 19 are ratchet wheels 23 and 24 by means of which the shafts 18 and 19 are limited in movement by the aid of pawls 25 and 26. The pawls are hinged in the housings 20 and 21 and in the side frame 4.
On the shaft 18 there is a hand wheel 27 by means of which the shaft 18 is revolved as desired in winding the gelatin pad sheet on the spindles. lVhen desired. a similar hand whe-el to that of 27 is put upon the shaft 19 for winding the gelatin pad sheet on the outward spindle 11.
The pawl engages by gravity since its outer end is long enough to mf'erlialance the inner engaging end and on the side of this outer end there is secured a, flat spring 28, showing in dotted lines in Figure 2 which engages a notch 29 (see Figure 1A) in the end of the flange of side frame 4 and holds the pawl 25 out of engagement when desired. Clearance space below the notch 29 allows the spring and outer end of the pawl 25 to vibrate as the ratchet revolves in winding the gelatin pad on to the frame spindle 11.
The pawl 26 has its catch in the form of a hook, as it were, and has connected to its shaft an arm 30 which is engaged by a thin flat bar 31 which rests on the offset 7 of the sine frame 4 and extends to the region of the hand wheel 27 when it engages an arm 32 on a short shaft 33 hinged in the housing 20 and the side frame 4 and the shaft 33 extends outside of the housing 2O and has mounted thereon a small hand lever 34 in convenientreach of the hand of the operator uli-en he operates the hand wheel 27. Thus as desired. the operator may release the pawl 26 and draw the gelatin band over from the rear spindle to the front or near spindle as desired and by engagement of both pawls 2:7 and he may draw the tuant taut over th:e impression bed 35 of the machine.
rhe inipression bed 35 is composed of a flat sheet of steel or other suitable metal a nd is bound on its lower marginal edges by strips of wood 36 or other material into which carpet tacks may be driven and over the top and edges of the impression bed there is stretched a sheet of felt cloth 37 or other suitable material and this felt is stretched over the wood strips 36 and is tacked thereto,
Atdesired intervals along the length of the impression bed at each side thereof sce Figures 4 and 6, there are secured to the impression bed plate 35 small metal blocks 38.
Through the. blocks 38, there pass the bolts or screws which secure the impression baul plate to horizontal flanges 39 of rack rails 40. Said rack rails 4() extend the length of the machine on each side and in between the narrow iianges 9 of the side frames but not in contact therewith but leaving a clearance space indicated as slots 41 between the rack rails 40 and flange 9 of the sideframes 3 and 4. On the outside edges of the rack rails 40 there are downwardly extending flanges 42 on which are rack gear teeth 43.
The rack rails 40 are connected at each end to end blocks 44 at the front or near end of the machine and end blocks 45 at the rear. (See Figures l, 1A, 5 and 6.) The blocks 44 are set vertically and blocks 45 are at an in-y cline and these end blocks are fastened by screws 46 and 47 to the rack rails and by screws 48 and 49 to a set of track bars 50.
The track bars 50, end blocks 44 and 45, rack rails 40 and impression bed plate 35, when fastened together as described, make a secondary frame unit on which is mounted the impression carriage which. impresses the paper to the impression bed.
This secondary frame is fastenedv by screws 5l to the side frames 3 and 4, the lower ends of the end blocks 44 and 45 resting on the offsets 7 of side frames.
By means of the two frames,4 as it were, the secondary frame permits `the impression carriage to be assembled and adjusted to the secondary frame when the latter is free from the main frame. y i Y The gelatin pad sheetis trained over the impression bed and the copy is made off of the portion 52 that is open on the bed,which portion is properly moistened bythe operator by any suitable means.
rlhe paper containing the master copy and the paper to receive copy are impressed on its gelatin portion 52 by a platen impression roll 53 carried in an impression carriage.
The impression carriageis provided with a cross frame memberz54, see Figure 6, having a downwardly extending stiffening flange and upwardly extending endV flanges 56, which end f ian stifiened on their edges by turned over iianges 57. The ends of the cross frame member are also stiffened by downwardly extending transverse angle pieces 56 riveted to the cross member 54.
To the end flanges 56.l there arersecured downwardly extending legs 59, which ride on trimmen ends 66 a cross shaft 6l, on which 7h-re are lined two gear wheels 62, which enbige the racl gear teeth 43, andby this means, the carriage is Vheld squarely across the impression bed in all the outward and back increments ofthe carriage.
The weight of the carriage supported by eos is carried en flanged wheels 63 oosely on shaft 6l and heldin posie said shaft by the wheels 62 at one side and by set collars Y64 on the other side.
The carriage is also supported at each end by peculiarly shaped en d castings having ciirifed upwardly extending arms 65 from and integral with longitudinal arm-s 66, the/'ends which are' connected or. the'trunnion ends of shaft 61.
Thecastings are fixed at 68 Figure 4) to a cross bar shaft 67 whichacts as a beam` 7l see Figure on which the legs 59 rest andV thus support the carriage when the same is in position of making copy.
The end castings are provided with lip projections 72 which extend under the track bars 50 and thus hold the end castings always down with the flanged wheels 69 in Contact with the track bars 50.
:V57 hen the carriage is in position of Figure 5, it is held in that position in relation to the end castings by means of catch blocks 73 engaging notches 74 in arms 65. There are two of the catch blocks 72E-one on each end of the carriage and are fixed on a cross shaft 75 extending underneath the cross frame 54 and fixed te this cross shaft 7 5 there is a lever arm 76 (see Figure 6) through the end of which there passes a bolt 77 over which there is a coil spring 7 8 which acts to hold Vthe catch blocks 7 3 in contact with the notches there is clearance to permit the passage of the spindles ll over the impression bed and through and underneath the impression carrin in the service of removing and replacing rolls of 'the gelatin pad in the use of the machine.
`Vlien the impression carriage is in the position of Figure l, it is held in repose in that position by means ef pins 60 vr-v/hich abut against the end of 57 to prevent further uplift of the'carriage and detent levers 8l hinged a't`82 to the end flanges 56 which levers also engage the pins 8O and hold 'the carriage upward. As desired, the operator releases the detent levers and lowers the carriage for copy position.
Extending across between the end flanges 56 of the impression carriage,there is a shaft 83 apertured at its ends into which stud plugs 84 (see F igure5i4) enter and are fixed therein by pins or other means and furnish the bearings for shaft inthe carriage frame.
The stud plugse4 are threaded in their ends for the use of a tool to assist in tl eir withdrawal when it is desired to take out the shaft S8 from the carriage.
The platen orimpressionroll 53 is preferfl a tubular end of the roll and held in an outward position by a spring S8 and prevented from being pushed out by the spring` 8S by a pin passing through a slot 90 in the trunnion 8T. The trunnion 8T is carried in a bearing bleek 01 and the trunnion 86 is carried in bearing block 92. which is a part of an arm Sli-l (see Figure (i) carried on shaft 83. The bearingblocl-I 91 is (see Figures 3, Il, 8, 811, 8B) is, as it were, connected to its supportingv arm 94. by a swivel joint connection, the block 01 having' hinge pinsI held in clasp pieces ixed to a swivel block 97 hinged in arm 04 and held therein by a pin 08 parsing along side a groove in the hinge projection of swivel block 97.
Then it is desired to remove the platen or impression roller it is pushed lengthwise compressing the spring; S8 until the trunnion 86 is free of b Haringv 02 and then the roll is rocked apast the bear-irreT 92 and pulled out from bearing` block 91, the latter moving` by its jointed connections to permit the withdrawal of the trunnion block 87. The platen roller 53 is returned in position by similar reverse movements from those in taliinfjT it out.
The arms 93 and 94 are provided with hubs 90 and 100 respectively that are free to revolve on shaft 83 through a small are \see Figures 3, 9A and 9B, 10B) and this arc being lin'iited by pins 101 in shaft 83 moving' in slots 102. Thus the arms and 04-Y may rock on shaft 83 the are ofthe slots 102.
The springs 103, collars 104; and 106 are normally covered up by tubular thimbles 110 and 111 for purposes of appearance and to defend against maladjustment of the springs by curious operators. The thimble 110 at left of Figure 3 is shown slipped otl' of the collars while the thinible 111 is in place covering up the springs 103, collars 104 and 10o on that end of the carriage.
The shaft 83 is operated in a rocking movement by an operating lever 112 having; a hand hold ball 113 by means of which the shaft is rocked moving the platen or impression roll 53 to and from the impression bed.
rlhe pressure may be adjusted desired by the adjustment of the spring 103 as described.
After the paper has been laid down for copy on the impression bed by rocking; forward, the operating lever 112 and the carriage moved forward slightly, the arm 11-1 in contact with pin 115 is locked in that position by a series of bell crank levers 116 hinged on a stud pin 117 in the left end flange of the carriage frame and levers 11G have engaging teeth 118 which vary as to each lever to insure an engagement with the arm 111 without slack or play as relates to the contact of arm 114 with pin 115.
The lower ends 119 of levers 116 are adapted to abut against a. stop block 120 at left side of the machine and release the arm 114 whenever the carriage is borne at the place` when paper is put in place and removed from the carriage.
A similar stop 121 is located at the right of the frame and these stops are faced with rubber cushioning blocks 122.
he stop blocks 120 and 121 are mounted on the rack rails 110 and are adjustable longitudinally thereon and held in place by set thumb screws 12S-however, certain locations sucli as the one whereat the standard margin bar and trie marginless margin bar is used, holes 1211 are drilled into the tops of the rack rails, shown in dotted lines in Figure 6 and the points of the screws 123 are set Yinto these holes for security of location of the stop in exact registration as desired.

The paper 125 for copy is placed in the machine in position of registration with its bottom edge in position on the standard margin bar 126, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 10 and then the operator rocks the impression or platen roll 53 downward bringing the paper 125 to contact with the gelatin pad at 52 on the bed 35 and in this movement the roll 53 pushes the paper into contact with a compression roll 127 which is mounted in bearings in blocks 128 which are hinged at 129 and are provided with arms 130 through which bolts 131 pass downward through the cross frame 54 of the carriage and have mountedv thereon springs 132 which hold the compressing roll 127 to hold the paper in contact with the impression roll 53 to assist in drawingV or lifting the paper from the gelatin pad on the return movement of the carriage.
As the impression roll moves downward in the function of passing the paper from Figure 10 to that of Figure 6, the contact with the compression roll 127 as roll 53 moves by it has a tendency to revolve the roll 53 and thus displace the paper from registry of the margin bar, land to insure against such displacement, there is provided means for holding the impression roll 53 from revolving and thus preventing such displacement.v
The means for preventing this displacenient may be by any suitable device' such as a friction brake on the roll 53, but there is here shown a ratchet 133 on the roll 53 and this atchet is engaged at a desired location of the carriage by a two toothed pawl 134 which is hinged at 135 to the hub 100 of arm 94 and drops by gravity7 to engagement with the ratchet 133 at all times when the carriage is at home against the stops 120 and 121 being the only location whereat the paper is placed in position of registration for copy and the only place where the roll 53 is moved to contact with the compression roll 127.
Wlhen the carriage is moving out and back .in the function of making the copy, the i awl 134 is lifted free et the ratchet 133 to permit the tree revolution of the roll 53 in making cepy. The pawl 134 engages the ratchet when the carriage is against the stops and is free from the ratchet when the carriage is away from the stops.
The movement of freeing the pawl 134 from the ratchet 133 is produced by a spring 136 (see Figure 5) on a bolt137 which passes through the iiange 57 at the right end of the carriages and through a lip 138 on a bell crank lever 139 hinged at 140 to the right end of the impression carriage. As best observed in Figures 3, 8 and 9, the lever 139 is provided with a projection 141 which en.
gages the end of a pin 142 of pawl 134 and this arrangement permits the spring 136 to lift the pawl 134 clear o1" the ratchet 133 when the carriage is moved away from the stops 120 and 121, but when the carriage is n too far from the ratchet 133, there is provided a stop catch 144 fastened to arm 94 by screw 145 and provided with a catch lip 146 which limits the uplift of pawl 134.
The pawl 134 made with two teethone main teoth and a secondary teeth hinged at 147 to main tooth and limited in movement in relation to main tooth by a pin 148 in main tooth in a slot 149 in secondary tooth (see Figure 9) and the teeth are shorter in relation to each other by the distance of onehalf the space oi" one ratchet teeth. So as to catch the ratchet at one-half tooth spaces, more than two teeth may be used when desired to vcatch smaller distances on the ratchet.
The standard margin bar 126 is provided with arms hinged at 151 to side frames ot' the machine when not in use and when a new roll spindle 11 is to be introduced, this bar 126 placed back in position shown by Figures 11 and 12.
Vlhen copies are desired to be made at or close to the margin oiC the paper, a marginless margin bar is used. See Figures 11 and 12 wherein 152 indicates the marginless niargin bar which is provided with an arm 153 at its left end hinged at 154 to left end of carriage trame. A similar arm 155 at the right end ot' thefbar 152 is hinged at 156 to the right end of carriage trame (see Figure 8). The lett arm 153 has an upper eX- tension 157 and is provided with corners 158 adapted to be engaged by a locking catch 159 hinged at 160 and this catch is held into engagement by a flat spring 161 which bears on the cross frame of the machine. The upper extension 157 of arm 153 is provided with a pin 162 which passes through a slot 163 in a link 164 which is provided with a slot 165 which rides on a pin 166 in a block 167 secured by a bolt 168 ,to arm 93 on shaft 83. The slot 165 is a long slot suiiicient to allow the shaft 83 to move through its normal arc Without moving the link 1611, but when the link 161 desired to be moved as is nee yssa in the use of the inarninless margin bar 152, the slot 165 is, as it were, slim-tened by a '-ieeuliarly shaped block 169 hinged at 176 to link 161 and provided With an e' d 171 adapt-ed to shunt oill the length of sl 165 and engage pin 166 and thus move the link oy said pin at that end of slot 165. XWhen bl' ek 169 is not in service, it moved upward out of the Way of pin 166 from position of Figure 11 to that of Figure 6. A coiled spring 172 is fastened to pin 162 and passes throngh the cross frame and is f2;- tened at 173 to always act to swing the marginless margin bar 152 back from position of Figure 11 to that of Figure 12 when permitted to do so by freeing the locking catch 159 from the corners 158.

lnplacing the link 161 on the pin 166, a notch 178 is provided to admit pin 166 to slot 165 (see Figure 12).
The functioningof marginlcss margin bar 152 is as follows:
T he operator lifts the roll from Figure 12 to that of Figure 11 and thus sets the bar 152 in position of Figure 11 and on descent of roll 53 the spring' 172 sets the bar 152 at position of Figure 12 and when bar 152 is not in use the parts stay in position of Fiel* ures 1 to 16 inclusive.
The paper in Figures 11 and 12 is indicated by 179.
r1`he cross frame 541 or" the impression carriage acts as the paper guide to the margin bars and a side guide for the paper is provided in the form of a plate 180 having' a llankeje 181 and this guide plate is adj sted across the carriage by hand and locked in position by a. small cani lever 182 in a downward flange 183 of plate 180 which flange 183 extends over and is bent under the {lang-e of cross frame 54.
1n machines of this class the gelatin pad is necessarily soft and sometimes in hot humid Weather the gelatin gets so soft that it gums up the platen roll and at all times some little gumming up of the platen roll takes place due in part to lint or coating from the paper and ink used to the end that it is necessary to Wash and clean the platen roll and it is of importance that the means for holding` the platen roll in the carriage be such that the roll may be easily and quickly removed and replaced and the means here shown are especially important in that spect.
Heretofore. it has generally been the practice to build machines to use either the .standard margin bar or the marginless margin bar as separate machines or in some. cases, as il were4 converting' one machine into the other by changes and removal or substitution o t a censiderablc number of parts, certain parts always being taken olf and stored when not required in .service of one or the otl inachine. This .method is objectienable as it consumes time in changing' the parts and the loose and unused parts are frequently lost or misplaced and the trouble of changri fi from one margin bar to the other more or less defeats the purpose of the use of one or the other type of machine. The arrangement of this machine wherein it takes but a moment to change from one bar to the other is a great desideratuin and made possible in part by the arms 93 and 91 which carry the platen roll being so shaped as to provide clearance underneath them for the marginless margin bar to pass and stay under the said arms when the marginless mar gin bar is out of service or in retreated position for if this marginless margin bar is to remain in the carriage while the standard margin bar is used, it must be so placed in retreat as to clear the standard margin bar when the latter is used anc this position is best observed in Figure 6 wherein 184 indicates the clearance of the arms 98 and 94 brought about by the upward shape of thek said arms in passing from the platen roll bearings to the shaft 83 instead of straight connections thereto.
T he rack teeth i3 of the flanges 42 of rack rails Ll0 are shown in Figure 5 and lextend the full length of and on both sides of the bed, but they are not drawn in full in the other iigures. This is likewise-true of the gear teeth of gear wheels 62.
Vilhat l claim is:
l. in a hectograph copying machine,'an impression bed adapted to have a hectograph gelatin sheet trained thereo-ver, a carriage carrying a platen roll and a compression roll, the latter adapted to compress paper to the platen roll, and means for bringing the two rolls together and for reciprocating the platen roll to the impression bed and the latter means provided with springs arranged to press the platen roll on to the impression bed in yielding elastic contact to accommodate unevenness in the bed and varying thickness of paper and gelatin sheet, and limiting means for limiting movement of said first mentioned means toward said impression bed to a region spaced from said bed a distance less than the range of action of said springs.
Q. ln a machine of the class described, an impression bed, a platen roll adapted -to impress paper on the impression bed, said platen roll mounted in bearings in arms mounted on a rocker shailt and said arms provided with spring connections to said rocker shaft.
3. ln a machine of the class described., an impression bed, a carriage including a platen roll adapted to impress paper on the impression bed, means for reciprocating said platen roll relative to saitL carriage and holding the said platen roll to the said bed, said means initluding a rocking member and springs between said rocking member and said platen roll, and limiting means for limiting the roel-ling movement of said rocking member to a region such that said springs may not be actuated to the limit of their range.
4. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed, a platen roll adapted to impress paper to the said bed, a rocker shaft adapted to carry the said platen roll and raise and lower the same in relation to the said bed, said platen rol having bearings and springs interposed between said bearings and said rocker shaft, and means for limiting the movement of said rocker shaft to a prede termined region whereby the roll is permitarms mounted on said adapted to be revolved thereon thru an arc,
`.ted to adjust itself to the bed by elastic contact.
5. In amachine of the'class described, an impression bed, a platen roll adapted to impress paper to the bed, a rocher shaft providing the means for being rocledthru an arc, rocher shaft and spring connections between the shaft andsaid arms and bearings in said arms for carrying the said platen roll.
6. ln a machine of the class described, :.n impression bed, a carriage, said carriage including a platen roll, and movable mea is supported by said carriage for holding sait platen' roll, said holding means incli'uling spring connectionsinterposed between said `platen roll and the remainder of said holding means, adjustable means for holding said holding means in a position adjacent Vto said bed.
7. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed, a platen roll adapted to impress paper to the said bed, 'a rocker shaft having arms in which are bearings for carrying the said platen roll, said arms engaged to be moved by springs on the said rocker shaft, collars on said shaft adapted to `assist in adjusting the pressure of said springs.
8. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed, a platen roll mounted and adapted to impress paper to the said bed, a rocker shaft adapted to carry and move said platen roll to and from the said bed, means for limiting the movement' f said rocker shaft to prevent excess pressure of said platen roll on said bed and spring connections between the said rocker shaft andsaid platen roll whereby the spring connections hold the said platen roll to the said bed after the limit of movement of said rocker shaft has been reached.
`9. In a machine of the class described, an impressi-on bed, a platen roll mounted to 1mpress paper on said bed, a rocker shaft provided with armsadapted to carry said platen roll, said arms mounted to revolve on said rocker shaft thru a small arc and prevented from moving more than said are, lined collars on said rocker sha t, and movable collars also on said shaft in relation to said iixed collars, means for adjusting the said movable collars in relation to said fixed collars, springs interposed between the said movable collars and said arms whereby the arms are moved thru their arcs of movement by the said springs, means for limiting the movement of said rocker shaft after the said platen roll is in cont-act with the impression bed.

In a machine of the class described, a` marginless margin bar hinged to swing to position of registration for the paper and to swing outward Vin retreat clear of the platen roll, positive means for swinging the said bar into registration position and a spring movement for swinging it to retreating position and said positive means composed of a link connection and said link having a slotted end and means for shutting oit the length of the said slot and said means 'lio-r shutting oil the length ot the said slot composed of a hinged block hinged to the said link and adapted to swing across the said slot and to swing clear of the same.

In a machine of the class described, a marginless margin bar adapted to be swung into registration position and out of and in retreat from said position, positive means tor moving the said bar into registration position and spring means for moving into retreat position, a vcatch adapted to hold said bar in registration position, a link connection tor moving the said bar positively and said link provided with slots at eachl end and the slot at one end adapted to permit the said link to act to disengage the said catch at the desired time and the slot at the other end of said link adapted to permit the said bar to be moved by the said spring whenever the said catch is released as aforesaid.
26. In a machine of the class described, a marginless margin bar hinged in the carriage frame ot' the machine, a platen roll carried in the said carriage trame by means of arms extending from a rocker shaft mounted in the said carriage and extending over Vsaid margin bar, said arms having clearance spaces on vtheir under sides for the passage of said marginless margin bar and said har passing underneath the said arms.
28. Ina machine of the class described, a marginless lmargin bar hinged in the carriage of the machine and adapted to swing into registration position and ont into retreated position; in combination with a standard margin bar hinged to the main frame of the machine and adapted to be swung into registration position and out in retreated position, the said marginless margin bar when in retreated position located above and clear or the top of the standard. margin bar when the latter is in registration position.
29. In a machine Vof the class described, a carriage carrying a platen roll adapted to impress paper to an impression bed, means for raising and lowering the said platen roll in relation to said bed, a compression roll adapted to compress paper to the said platen roll, a margin bar for registering the paper in relation to said bed, means tor preventing the revolution ot said platen roll in the movement of compressing paper in first contact with said compression roll and bed and means for releasing the said platen roll to revolve as the said carriage is moved out in making copy.
30. In a machine of the class described, an impression bed, a carriage adapted to move over the said bed and having a platen roll mounted therein in a manner to be moved to and tromthesaid bed, a margin bar located across the said bed, stops for arresting the movomentot' the said carriage in desired registering position 'for makin@ copy, means for preventing the revolution ot the said platen roll at all time when the said carriage is in Contact with said stops and means for releasing the said platen roll to revolve when the said carriage moves away from the said stops.
