Description
April 19, 1932.
H. c. MAUL' OVEN BURNER HEAD Filed April 20, 1931 INVENTOR BY 6'. b14441- ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 19, 1932 UNITED sTArEs PATENT OFFICE HENRY O. HAUL, DETROIT, HIOHTGAN, ABSIGNOE TO DETROIT IICHIGAN STOVE COMPANY, 01' DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A OQRPORATION OI MICHIGAN om some This invention relates to gas range constructions and more particularly to improve-. ments in the feeding of gas to the oven and valve, the latter being provided with a thermal bar which controls the size of the orifice in the valve. A vertical pipe leads from the orifice and conducts gas from the valve to the horizontal mixing tube of the oven and broiler burner.
In constructions as at present known, the pipe which leads from the thermal valve to the mixing tube is a vertical pipe having a horizontal portion which opens into the horizontal portion of the burner, the latter having a horizontally opening shutter controlled mixing tube mouth on the terminal of its horizontal ortion. A serious objection to ranges of t is type has been found. When the manual control on the thermal valve is moved from high to low, the orifice the thermal valve is made very small, and the gas escaping from the small orifice in the thermal valve loses its pressure in the vertical pipe leading to the burner. Accordingly, when the gas emerges from the horizontal part of this pipe into the mixing tube mouth, it has not suflicient velocity to overcome the pressure within the burner due to the heat of the oven and accordingly the gas coming out of the open end of the pipe does not reach the burner openings to be consumed but instead escapes from the mixing tube thru the shutter controlled openings in the mouth, in an unconsumed condition. This condition, as observed in ranges, is commonly called a gas leak, when in fact there is no leak at all.
In the construction of the invention, the mixing tube has a depending vertical portion having a downwardly opening mouth,
and the vertical pipe has an upstanding vertical portion opening ipto the mouth so that the gas rises as it enters the tube. Accordingly, the gas will rise into the tube a considerable distance, regardless of the pressure 0 behind it and will be carried into the burner Application fled April :0, 1031. Serial no. 531,441.
by the inflowing air, there being, thus, no escape or leak of unconsumed gases.
An object of this invention, therefore, is a range having a novel form of connection, one which insures the combustion of the gases coming out of the vertical pipe regardless o the gas pressure conditions existent.
other object is a novel form of connec- I tion between the vertical pipe aforementioned and the horizontal part of the burner,
one in which the horizontal part ofthe bumer is provided with a downwardly depending vertical part having'a mixing tube mouth at its end, mto which the upstanding vertical terminal of the vertical pipe is prO ected, the
pipe having a U bend at its lower end to provide such a vertical upwardly projecting terminal.
Still further objects will readily occur to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which The single figure on the drawing shows in perspective a range'equipped with the novel form of connection above described.
Referring to this figure, it will. be seen that the range includes an oven compartment 10, a broiler compartment 12, a service drawer 14, and a concealing plate 16 behind which is a manifold 17 having cocks whose stems project thru the plate and are provided with handles 18 disposed in front of the plate. A gas supply line 20 comes into the stove from the rear thereof, extending along the right side, and is provided with a double elbow 2224 by means of which it is connected to the manifold 17. The central one of the cooks whose handles are indicated at 18 is the oven burnercock, and it is indicated at 28. This cock may be of any desired form, and is connected to the manifold on the under part thereof, and has a union fitting leading rearwardly therefrom and connected to the oven burner supply pipe oven 10 and is provided with a riser 34, leading into and connected to the inlet of the thermally controlled valve 36. This valve may be of any suitable form and has a thermal bar 38 for automatically controlling the size of the valve orifice and also a setting handle 40'- whose function is well known in the art. The valve 36 has a part 42 extending into the oven casing and from this part depends the vertical pipe 44 which conducts gas to the oven burner 46, the latter being disposed beneath the floor 48 of the oven and having burner holes (not sfhown) preferably located on its under surace.
The construction thus far described is more or less conventional and forms no part of the resent invention, which concerns itself mainy with the form of connection between the vertical pipe 44 and the horizontal burner 46. The connection of the invention includes a U shaped part 52 which is connected to the lower extremity of the vertical pipe by means of the fitting 54 and which has an upstanding or upwardly extending part 56 disposed within the conventional shutter controlled mixing tube mouth 58 of the mixing tube 60, the latterv connecting to the horizontal part 62 of the burner.
As can be readily understood gas entering the pipe 20 goes into the manifold 17 and when the cock 28 is opened, the gas goes thru the pipes 32--34, thru the orifice in valve 36 and its part 42, and into the pipe 44 from whence it emerges into the conventional mixing tube mouth 58, then going into the mixing tube and into the burner.
In the old constructions where the parts 56 and 60 were horizontal, the gas would escape from the part 56 and then out thru the air openings in the mixing tube mouth without having been burnt, this being due to the lack of pressure behind the gas at this point when the orifice in the valve 36 was made very v small.
In the present construction, however, it will be seen that as the gas emerges from the part 56 it tends to rise of its own accord, regardless of whatever pressure exists behind it, and accordingly gas will find its way into the mixng tube and consequently into the burner Now having described the invention and the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the said invention is to be limited, not to the specific details herein set forth, but only by the scope of the claims which follow:
What I claim is:
1. In a gas range, an oven, a broiler compartment, a horizontally disposed elongated oven burner in the broiler compartment, immediately beneath the floor of the oven and provided with a depending vertical mixing tube having a downwardly opening, shutter controlled, mixing tube mouth, a thermally controlled, manually settable valve ona wall of the oven, near the oven ceiling, and a pipe leading from the valve outlet to the mixing tube mouth, the pipe including a lpprtion passmg by the oven where it will heated by the'oven heat, a portion passing by the mixing tube mouth, and an upstandingyterminal portion opening into the mixing tu mouth.
2. In a gas range, an oven ortion, a broiler portion therebeneath, an a burner plate to one side of'the oven and broiler portions, a horizontally disposed elongated oven burner in the broiler portion, immediately beneath the floor of the oven and provided with a depending vertical mixing tube having a downwardly opening; shutter controlled mixing tube mouth, a manifold under the plate near the front of the range, a thermally controlled manually settable valve on a wall of the oven, near the oven ceiling, a pipe leading from the manifold to the valve inlet, and a pipe leading from the valve outlet to the mixing tube mouth, the latter pipe including a portion passing by the oven where it will be heated by the oven heat, a portion passing by the mixing tube mouth, and an upstanding terminal portion opening into the mixing tube mouth.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
