Abstract
223,937. Bennett, J. S. Oct. 25, 1923, [Convention date.]. Open fireplaces; air-heating fittings; grates; draught, regulating; fenders. - Apparatus for controlling the draught of an open fireplace and for heating the room, comprises an air-heating conduit supplied with air from outside the room and the outlet from which is regulated by means of a damper which directs the air into the room or into the chimney, communication with the room being cut off in the latter case. In the fireplace shown, air is supplied from outside the room bv conduits 15, 14 to hollow andirons 4 and thence, by a manifold 5 bridging their rear ends, to pipes 6 extending over the back of the fireplace. The horizontal upper ends of these pipes terminate in a manifold 7 having outlets 8, 9 respectively to the room and to the throat 3 of the chimney, the outlets being simultaneously controlled by a damper 11. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which air supply conduits 14<1> form a guard to retain the fuel on the hearth. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also on open fireplace in which the draught is checked by air supplied to the throat of the chimney by a damper controlled conduit extending through the back of the fireplace, no air-heating means being provided. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
