Description
S. SATAKE BULLET SHIELD Feb. 2, 1932.
Filed Oct. 7, 1950 INVENTORP.
QSHUZO SATAKE.
Patented Feb. 2, 1932 UNITED STATES SHUZO SATAKE, OF CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA BULLET SHIELD Application filed October 7, 1930. Serial No. 486,983.
This invention relates to improvements in bullet shields, and its objects are to provide a foldable and collapsible shield which may be carried conveniently upon the body of the .operator or user of the device.
This device is especially adapted for use by police, bank employees, and detectives,
and, for convenience in carrying when not in use, it consists of a plurality of strips of sheet metal, hardened and tempered, and foldable upon one another, and means for securing the same in collapsed position.
Other objects and advantages may appear in the subjoined detail description.
1 In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation of the device in unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a pintle member for .securing adjoining sections together. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a section of the shield. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the device in partly unfolded position. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary and detail view showing the latch for securing the sections in folded position. Fig. 6 is an enlarged end elevation of the device in 25 folded position, with the end section broken away.
7, Referring in detail to the drawings, shield sections 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, are foldable to form a cover in folded position for the re- 0 maining sections 16. Section 12 has integral end sections 17. Section 14 has a short projecting rib'18 adapted to engage with flange 19, on section 11, in the folded position of the device.
on the outer side of member 11. A flash-light 23 is mounted in holder 22, and may be removed therefrom if it is desired to use the same, In looking position of the device, the flash-light and holder are normally parallel relative to member 11, but are turned to a ertical position to release the shield. Adoining sections of the shield have corresponding knuckle members 24, 25, 26 and 27, which are united by pintle member 28, hav- -60 ing a screw threaded end 29 to engage with knuckle member 24, and having screw threaded section 30 to engage with knuckle member 25.
For supporting the device upon the person of the user, I provide a leather strap 31, adapted to pass around the neck, while the shield, in operative position, extends over the breast of the user.
Each shield section is provided on the outer surface, in open position, with. projections 32 which serve to prevent bullets from glancing side-ways, or particles of lead from flying at an angle. This prevents injury to others when two or more persons are working together in such positlon that one may be hit by deflected bullets, or fragments thereof.
In use, the device is carried in unfolded position, and normally covers the vital portions of the user. It may be carried in folded position when danger is not apparent, and is quickly released by turning the flash-light to vertical position. The flash-light is quickly detachable when required for use.
From the foregoing description and drawings, it may be seen that I have provided an efficient bullet shield which is portable, and which may be quickly placed in operative position for protecting the person of the operator.
What is claimed is: i 0
1. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of 8 sections foldable upon one another and having a hinge joint connection between adjacent sections, and arranged wherebythe five uppermost sections form a cover for the remaining sections in folded positions, latch elements to secure the cover sections together, and a supporting strap secured to the uppermost section.
2. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of sections foldable relative to each other, knuckle and pintle elements securing adjacent sections together, and arranged whereby the five uppermost sections form a cover for the remaining sections in folded position, a latch to secure the cover sections together in folded position, and a flash-light holder integral with the latch.
3. .A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of sections foldable relative toeach other,
knuckle and pintle elements securing the adj acent sections together, a latch serving to secure the sections in folded position, a flash light holder integral with the latch, and a flash light mounted in the holder.
4. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of sections foldable relative to each other, and arranged whereby the five uppermost sections form a cover for the remaining sections in the folded position, a latch to secure the cover sections in foldedposition, a flash light holder integral with the latch, and a flash light mounted in the' holder, said flash light being turned to a vertical position to release the latch.
5. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of sections foldable to a collapsed position and arranged whereby the five uppermost sections form a cover in folded position for the remaining sections, and a latch to secure the sections in their folded position.
6. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of foldable sections, and arranged whereby the five uppermost sections form a cover for the remaining sections in folded position, a latch on the under side of the uppermost section, lugs on said fifth section arranged to engage with said latch, a flash light holder integral with the latch, and a flash light mounted in the holder.
, 7. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of foldable sections, and arranged whereby the five uppermost sections form a cover for the remaining sections in folded position, latch elements to retain the sections in folded position, and a supporting strap secured to the uppermost section.
8. A bullet shield, comprising a plurality of foldable sections arranged whereby the five uppermost sections form a cover for the remaining sections in folded position, latch elements to retain the sections in folded position, and a plurality of projections on each section and extending outwardly in the open position. j
9. A bulletshield, com rising a plurality of foldable sections, knuc le and pintle elements arranged whereby adjoining sections are operatively connected, and a plurality of bullet deflecting projections on ach section and arranged to project outwardly in the unfolded position of the sections.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my signature.
