SHIELD.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN Man'rrNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county ofureau and State of Illinois, have^ invented a certain l new and useful Improvement in Shields, of

which the following is a specification.

This inventionrelates to a portable shield which is designed to be carried so as to protect the user from bullets. It has for one object to provide a light, portable shield` which may be used by police and other ot'- icers to protect the user from bullet fire, and also to provide means whereby he may direct his oWn firing against an assailant, while still being protected. Other objects will appear from time to time throughout the specification and claims.

My invention is illustrated more or less in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device et' the invention;

Figure 2 is a perspective of the rear;

Figure 3 is a vertical cross section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Like parts are designated by like characters throughout.

A is a shield provided with the reduced upper portion B, Which is here shown as rounded. The entire shield iscurved as shown particularly in Figure 3 and is provided about its edge with a reversed curve (l.

The purpose of this curve is to 'deflect bullets and fragments of bullets which strike near the edge of the shield, or which are deflected from the shield, to prevent their lpassingto the rear. The reversed curve causes them to pass again to the'front, or at least deflects the fragments of the bullet so that thev do not" splatter inV the rear ofthe shield.

D is an opening in the front of the shield. It may be used for observation or may be used to lire through. It is closed by a piv- `oted cover D1, which as here shown is mounted in the rear of the shield. It may be in the front but it is preferably mounted in the rear.

I claim:

1. In a protective shield, a shield body having a convex face, the edges of said body being slightlyI recurved, arm engaging supporting means secured to the rear of said shield, a peep-hole adjacent the top thereof, and a cover therefor operablefrom the rear of the shield, the shield being of` reduced size adjacent its top. l

2. In a protective shield, a shield body having a conve-x face, the'entire edge of said shield being slightly reeurved, arm engaging supporting means secured to the rear of said shield, a peep-hole adjacent the top thereof, and a cover therefor' operable from the rear, the shield being of reduced size adjacent its top.
