Description
Oct. 1, 1929. I LATERZA 1,730,279
PUNCH Filed Aug. 5, 1927 BY i O I ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 1, 1929 PUNCH Application filed August 5, 1927.
This invention relates to a punch, the general object of the invention being to provide means for punching a number of holes in material simultaneously for decorative and other purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide interchangeable sets of male and female dies, whereby the punch can be used to make different sized holes in the material.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combinati on and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved punch.
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the head of the punch.
Figure A is an end view.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 8.
Figure 6 is a view of the male member.
In these drawings, A and B indicate the two members of the punch which are pivotally connected together by the bolt 1 and the wing nut 2. The member A is formed with an L-shaped head 3, the short arm of which forms a stationary jaw, while the long arm forms a guideway for the movable jaw 4: which is notched, as at 5, to receive the forked end 6 of the member B, a pin 7 passing through the movable jaw and between the prongs of the forked part so that rocking movement of the member B will cause the movable jaw to slide on the long arm of the L-shaped head. The long arm of the head 3 has an opening therein through which passes the forked end of the member B.
Serial No. 210,947.
A plate 8 is screwed to the movable jaw by the screw 9 and this plate carries three pins 10, one of which is larger than the others. A U-shaped plate 11 is fastened to the stationary jaw by the screw 12 and the two limbs of the U-shaped plate are each formed with the three holes 13 for receiving the pins. The
parts are so arranged that the free ends of the pins will remain in the holes of the outer limb of the U-shaped plate when the jaws are separated and when the handle parts are pressed toward each other against the action of the spring 14, the movable jaw will be moved toward the stationary jaw and thus the pins will pass through the space between the limbs of the U-shaped plate into the holes of the inner limb and thus pass through material placed in this space. The stationary jaw is provided with an opening 15 which communicates with the holes in the inner limb of plate 11 so that material punched out will drop through this opening 15.
As will be seen, the two plates can be removed, and by providing sets of other plates formed with difierent sizes of pins and holes, the punch can be used to punch holes of different sizes in material. This device will punch three holes simultaneously in the material.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A punch of the class described comprising a pair of members pivotally connected together, one member having a forked end and the other having an L-shaped head, the vertical part of which has an opening therein through which the forked end of the other member passes, the horizontal part of said head forming a stationary jaw which has an opening therein, a movable jaw slidably mounted on the Vertical part of the head, a pin passing through said jaw and between the prongs of the forked end, a punch carrying plate connected with the under face of the movable jaw, a U-shaped die member connected with the jaw forming part of the L-shaped head and having its openings in alignment with the opening of said aw forming part.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
DOMENICK LATERZA.
