MELCHOR GENTENO V., 0F CARACAS, VENEZUELA.
NAIL STRAIGHTENER.
Application led June 13, 1925. Serial No. 36,895.
Another object resides inthe provisionl of a tool of the class mentioned which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and easy of operation.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination ands arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which y f.
Figure l is a perspective view of the device.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Figure 1. Y i
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the movable jaws.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 23 designates a box-like frame having yregistering slots 24 in opposite side walls. SlidableY vertically within the frame are co-acting'jaws 25 and 26 which are identical in construction and which are formed with spaced gripping plates 28 having V-shaped notches 29 therein. The plates of one jaw are movable witlrin the spaces between the plates of the other jaw and when the same are moved to the limit of their separation, a passage-way is formed in register with the slots 24 for receiving the nail to be straightened. Handles 28 extend from opposite sides of the jaws for gripping engagement by the hands of the operator for moving the jaws toward each other.
In operation, it will be seen that upon movement of the jaws 25 and 26 away from each other, the same will separate, thereby providing a transverse passage for the reception of the nail to be straightened-- When the shank of a nail has been inserted between the jaws, pressure is applied to the handles 28 by the operator, which by reason of the leverage afforded, causes the co-acting jaws to straighten `any portion ofthe shank which may be irregular. After the shankV has been straightened, pressure is relieved from the handles and the nail with- Y drawn.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a tool which Y is capable of being carried in the tool kit, of carpenters for instant use and which is desired may be used in connection with acombination tool.
yWVhat is claimed as'new is l. A nail straightening device comprising a box-like frame, a pair of V-shaped jaws movable within said frame, said frame having aligned rectangular slots provided in v opposite walls thereof for the insertion of a nail between said jaws when said jaws are in an extended position to provide a con- @tinuous 'passage therethrough in alignment with said slots, .and manipulating handles extending from opposite sides of said jaws for actuating the same.
2. A nail straightening device'comprising a box-like frame having aligned slots provided in opposed walls thereof, a pair of members movably mounted within said frame, each member having a plurality `of spaced V-shaped jaws, the jaws of one member being inverted with respect to the jaws of the other member and interposed between the jaws of said other member to provide a continuous passage therethrough in alignment with said slots for the insertion of a nail to be straightened, and manipulating handles extending from opposite sides ofV said members for actuating the same.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.v
