This invention relates to railway cars and more particularly to the framing thereof and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved construction at the side plates of railway passenger cars which will provide a simple construction of ample strength and which will provide proper support for the car roof and the card holders. It is also an object of this invention to provide an improved side plate for railway passenger cars.
With these and other objects in view, this invention comprises the combinations and arrangements described in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings 1n which:
Fig. 1 is a partial vertical transverse section taken as on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2 of a railway passenger car body constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a broken partial vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and 0 Fig. 3 is a perspective vlew of a port on of the side plate used in the construct on shown in Figs. land 2, an end of the side plate being shown in section.
In the drawing, the invention is shown applied to a car-body having posts 1 of substantially U-shape with the legs 2 thereof projecting outwardly from the web 3 and provided with laterally projecting flanges 4 to which the sheathing 6 is attached. As shown in Fig. 1, the upper ends of the posts are shaped to conform to the curvature of the car body and the posts and sheathing are inset as at 8 so as to provide a smooth surface when the side plate 10 is applied to the upper ends of the posts.
The side plate 10 which extends from end to end of the car is of substantially inverted U-shape having a web 12 extending horizontally and downwardly projecting legs 14 and 16, the leg 14 being shaped to correspond to the curvature of the roof and the upper portion of the posts. The leg 16 extends parallel to the webs 3 of the posts and is secured thereto by means of gusset plates 18 which are riveted to the web 3 and to the le 16. Mounted upon the web 12 of the si e plate 10 are the carlines 20 of substantially inverted U-shape with the legs 22 projecting downwardly from the web 24 and provided with laterally projectin flanges 26 which rest upon and are secured to the web 12 of the side plate. Attached to the web 24 of the carlines 20 are the roof sheets 28 which overlap the upper end of the leg 14 of the side plate 10. Inter osed between the roof sheets 28 and the eg 14 of the side plate 10 is the letter board or fascia plate 30 which conforms to the curvature of the posts and extends downwardly to overlap the upper edge of the upper window frame member 32. Rivets extending through the flanges 4 of the posts 1, the sheathing 6, the leg 14 of the side late 10 and the fascia plate 30 and roof s eets 28 unite the members together. To further secure the carlines to the side plates, brackets 32 are placed between the carlines and the side plates and secured to the flanges 26 of the carlines and to the leg 16 of the side plate 10 and the gusset plates 18. To the flanges 26 of the carlines 20 brackets 34 are attached. The brackets 34 serve to su port a card holder 36 which is attached ad acent its lower edge to plates 38 welded to the 'webs 3 of the posts. The lower edge of the card holder 36 is bent upwardly as at 39 to form a clip which engages the lower edges 'of the cards, the upper ed es of which are engaged by clips 41 carrie by the brackets 34.

What is claimed is:
1. In a car, a side plate having a flange the outer edge portion of which isinclined upwardly with respect tothe remaining portion of the flange.
