Application filed D ecemberllf, 1925.l Serial No. 75,279'.L I
` The invention relates Ato partsfor railway g cars made of metallic'plates reinforced and'- tion of two metallic plates joined in accordance with my improvement.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In my construction I position an embossment near one side of the plate so that one 4 at the yedge of the plate, which flange is secured to a corresponding flange 5 on the adjacent plate. The rivetJ 6 (or other securing means) is located midway between the bounding planes lof the embossed structure so that it is in the neutral axis of the'section. 'Ihe corrugated section is, therefore, now weakened by punching the holes for these rivets.
The edge flanges 5-6 of the adjacent the Original planes of the respect-ive plates at 7 so that they lie in the same planes as the respective marginal portions. (A slight Offset, of course, being required in one of the plates.) These flattened flange portions 7 are preferably secured together by one or more rivets 8.
The upper edge flange is preferably eX- tended, as at 9, and bent to overlap the body portion of the other sheet and the sheets may be provided with flanges 10, if desired.
The construction. may be used in a car wall, door or other part of the car and is es pecially adaptable where it is desirable that the joint between the sheets form a watershed.
I claim:
1. In. a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an embossment adjacent one side forming an Oblique flange at one edge, and another metallic plate having an oblique flange at One'edge parallel to and secured to the upper side of the first mentioned flange.
2. In a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an embossment adja centi'oneside forming an Oblique flangefat' i one edge, said embossment and flange merginginto the original planeI of the plate to form a flat margin, and another metallic plate having an oblique flange at one edge parallel to and secured to the rst mentioned flange, said flange merging into the original plane Vof the plate to form a flat margin.
3., In a railway car part comprising aV metallic plate having an embossment adjacent'one side forming an Oblique flange at one edge, said embossment and flange merging into the original plane of the plate to form a flat margin, and anothermetallic plate having an Oblique flange at one edge parallel f to and secured to the upper side of the first mentioned flange, said flange merging into the original plane of the plate to form a flat margin. Y
4. In a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an embossment adjacent one side forming an oblique flange at one edge, said embossment and flange merging into the original plane of the plate to form a flat margin, and another metallic plate having an oblique flange at one edge parallel to and secured to the first mentioned flange, said flange merging into the Original plane of the plate to form a flat margin which is secured to the corresponding flat margin, of the adjacent plate.
5. In a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an embossment adjacent one side forming a flange at one edge, and another metallic plate having a flange at one side parallel to and secured to the upper side of the first mentioned flange.`
6. In a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an embossment adjacent one side forming a flange at One edge, said embossment and flange merging into the original plane of the plate to form a flat margin, and another metallic plate having a flange at one side parallel to andl secured to said flange, said flange merging into the original plane of the plate to form a flat margin.
7 In a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an embossment adjacent one side forming a flange at one edge, said embossment and flange merging into the Original plane of the plate to form a flat margin, and another metallic plate having a flange at one side parallel to and secured to the first mentioned flange, said flange merglill ing into the original plane of the plate to form a flat margin, which is secured to the corresponding fiat margin of the adjacent plate.
8. In a railway car part comprising a metallic plate having an einbossment adjacent one side forming a flange at one edge, and another metallic plate having a flange at one side parallel to and secured to the first mentioned flange, said flange extended and bent to overlap the embossinent inthe other sheet. n
9. An end wallfor a railway car comprising a lowerunetallic plate having an emhossinent at its upper side forming a flange at its upper edge, and an upper metallic plate having' a flange at its lower edge parallel Ato and secured to the upper side of the first mentioned ange.
10. An end wall for a railway ear comprising a lower metallic plate having an enibossment at its upperside, and an upper metallic plate having a partial embossment at its lower side overlapping and secured to the embossinent in the lower plate.
