My invention relates to a wrench which may have the form of a monkey wrench as well as a pipe wrench.
rllhe general object of my invention is to provide a novel means for giving the mov able jaw of the wrench characteristic adjustments for quickly giving the movable jaw in approximate adjustment to the work and also for disposing the controlling means of the movable jaw that said jaw may slip over the angles of a nut in effecting successive grips on the nut.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawingsforming a part of this specifica-- tion, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention. n
Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, the plane of the section being indicated by the line 1-1 in Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figures 3, ll, 5 and 6 are transverse sections taken respectively in planes indicated by the lines 3 3, 4 4-, 5-5 and 6-6 in Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the wrench with a portion of the handle broken away to show the controlling means for the movable jaw; a comparison of the full line and dotted line positions of the wrench being helpful to an understanding of the mode of manipulating the wrench in successively gripping the nut on different faces in turning the nut.
Figure 8 is a side elevation with part of the handle broken away showing the control means for the movable jaw in position for sliding the movable jaw toward or from the lined jaw. V
In the illustrated example of my invention the numeral 10 indicates the shank of the handle member 116 for swinging said rack 16 laterally against the tension of the spring .18, which spring normally maintains the rack 1n engagement with the block 19 .fixed upon a swingable operating element 2O having opposite lianges 21 at the outer edge thereof. The element 2O controls the position and operation of the movable jaw through the medium of the rack 16 and the toothed block 19.
The said element is fulcrumed at 22 between the plates 13, said plates and their wooden coverings 14 being united by transverse rivets 23, the arrangement being such that the element 2O may be swung on its fulcrum 22 so that in the swinging of the element 2O it will cause the block 19 to move rack 16 and jaw 15, it being observed that said block 19 has its teeth in a curved line as best shown in Figure 8. The element 20 normally lies in the channel of the handle.
The wrench as shown in Figures 1 and 7 is employed for turning a nut A. An approximate adjustment of the movable jaw 15 to the nut A is obtained by laterally swinging the rack 16 on its pivot 17 by taking hold of the handle member 11G to completely disengage said rack from the block 19 as in Figure 8, thus permitting the movable jaw 15 to be slid toward or from fixed jaw 11. l/Vith the movable jaw in approximate adjustment to the nut A the restoring of the element 20 to the inner position and the swinging of said element 2O on its pivot 22 after the rack 16 has been restored to engagement with the block 19 will cause a movement of the movable jaw into close adjustment with the nut.
Rferring to Figure 7 it will be seen that in both the full and dotted line positions the rack 16 is in engagement with the teeth of block 19 and that in the full line position of the parts shown, the element 2() is swung outwardly. In the dotted line position of the parts in Figure 7 the element 20 has been restored to the inner position. When the nut A has been gripped and given one turn, if the element 2O be swung outwardly, the engagement of the block 19 with the rack 1G is vieldable by reason of spring 18 and such that the wrench may be turned from the dotted line position of the jaws to the full line position, the movable jaw at this time slipping over the angles of the nut and the rack 16 will accommodate itself to the yielding of the movable jaw by the yielding of the spring 1S. Hence the movable jaw automatically conforms itselt` to the movements of the Wrench in shifting from one gripping position of the Wrench on the nut to the next successive gripping position. j
I would state furthermore that While the `villustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I. do not limit myself strictly to the exactdetails herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the saine can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Vhat I claim is:
Vl. A Wrench, comprising a shank having a iiXed j aWat one end and a cliannelled handle at its other end, the channel extending longitudinally oit. the handle a slidable jaw on the shank, a pivoted and spring pressed rack carried by the slidable jaw and extending into the channel of the handle, a-ineinne-r pivoted to the handle of a length 'to extend approximately to the end of the handle, and normally lying in the channel thereoi, and a 'toothed block secured to thev said member and engaging the rack, the teeth et the bleek being on a curved line.
2., A Wrench comprising va shank having a ti-Xedjaw at one end and a handle at the other, the handle projecting laterally of the shank and having a longitudinal channel, a slidable jaw on the shank, a pivoted and spring pressed rack mounted on the slidable jaw and extending into the channel of the handle, a member pivoted to the laterally projecting portion otl the handle and normally lying in the channel ot the handle, said member having oppositely projecting flanges overlying the channel ot the handle when said member is in said channel, and a toothed block Secured to the sido olE said member opposite its pivot and engaging the rack, the teeth ot the block being on a, curved line.
3. A wrench comprising a shank having a lined jaw at one end and a handle at the other end, the handle having a lateral projection intermediate olE its ends and a longitudinal channel, a slidable jaw on the shanlt, member having an enlarged end pivoted to the projection of the handle, said nienibei normally lying in the channel to be grasped by the hand grasping the handle, a toothed block carried by the said nieniber opposite its pivot,n and a pivoted and spring pressed rack on the movable janv and extending into the channel ot the handle, said iacl being provided with a handle for swinging it against the action oi its spring and out et engagement with the toothed block.
