UNITED STATES CLARENCE A. HARDY, OF NAPOLEON, OHIO.
TYPE LIFTER.
g Application filed November 5, 1928.
The present invention relates to lifters for blocks of types from the type bed and is adapted particularly for the removal of a block of type from a newspaper set up or the like.
It frequently happens that in the setting up of newspaper type or the like, that an advertisement is frequently included and set up with the .type and which oftentimes must be removed from the setup without interference with the remainder of the type.
It is accordingly-the purpose of the present invention to provide atype lifter embodying a plurality of adjustable clamping members for engaging the opposite sides of the block of type desired to be removed from the set up for removing the same as a unit from the bed of the type.
A still further object is to provide an apparatus of this character of a simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in performance relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, combination and arrangement of the various elements forming the invention as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showmg the device in lifting position with respect to a block of type,
Figure 2 thereof,
Figure 3 is an end elevational view,
Figure 4- is a plan View of the threaded face of the scroll plate,
Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing the gripping face of one of the clamping members,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the supporting bracket for the clamping member,
Figure 7 is a similar view of the guide block for the adjustable arm,
Figure 8 is a similar View of the leaf spring utilized for retaining the adjustable arm in position upon the clamping bracket and is a vertical sectional View Serial No. 317,472.
Figure 9 is a similar view of the friction gripping face of the clamp.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed my invention as comprising an annular block 5 having one face formed with a'pair of grooves 6 disposed at right angles to each other and intersecting at the center of the block.
As clearly illustrated in Figure 7 of the drawings, the grooves 6 extend through the greater portion of the height of the block. A plurality of arms 7 are arranged with one end slidably disposed in the respective ends of each of the grooves 6, said arms having their upper edges adjacent the block formed with teeth 8 adapted for engagement by the spirally formed thread 9 formed on the under side of a scroll plate 10.
The scroll plate is mounted upon the block 5 in superposed relation and is secured in engagement with the teeth 8 of the arm for rotary movement independent of the block by means of a cap 11 provided with an annular flange 12 seat-ed upon a shoulder 13 formed at the inner periphery of said scroll plate.
The cap 11 is secured to the block 5 by bolts or screws 14; inserted through the cap with their lower ends inserted in threaded opening 15 formed in the upper surface of the block.
The scroll plate 10 is thus secured upon the block for rotary movement and upon such movement it will be apparent that the arms 7 will be slidably adjusted inwardly or outwardly of the block depending upon the direction of rotation of said scroll plate. The outer surface of the scroll plate is milled as shown at 16 to facilitate the gripping thereof by the hand of the operator.
A clamping bracket 17 is carried on each of the arms 7 said bracket being of a sub stantially U-shaped formation with its parallel ends 18 extending upwardly and provided with vertically slotted openings 19 through which the arm 7 is inserted.
The lower edge of one of the slotted openings 19 is beveled as shown at 20 for engaging teeth 21 formed on the lower edge of the arm 7. A leaf spring 22 is inserted between the upper edge of said slotted opening and the upper edge of the arm 7 whereby to yieldably retain the teeth 21 in engagement with the flanged edge 20 of the slotted; opening.
The leaf spring 22 is notched at its opposite edges, as shown at 23 within which to receive the opposite side edges of the slotted opening and prevent accidental displacement of the spring from its position upon the upper edge of the arm.
The inner end of the bracket 17 is formed with a pair of openings 24 through which bolts or rivets 25 are inserted for attaching a clamping plate 27 to the bracket, said clamping plate extending below the'bracket and'ha'sthelower portion of its inner face milled 'as shown at 27 to insure a friction gripping engagement of the plate with the sides of the'block of type shown by the dotted lines'at 28. By providing each of the arms 7'with a clamping bracket of the character specified it will be apparent that the clamping plate carried by the bracket may 'be arran'ged in opposed clamping position "at the four sides of the block of type and by moving the arms inwardly through the proper-Ymanipulation of the scroll plate 10,
the clamping'plate will tightly engage the 'block'of'type and permit removal thereof :fr'om'th'e set up as a unit.
of the bracket by the teeth 21 of the respec- The engagement tive arms permits of an approximate adjustment of the'clampingbrackets at the sides of the block of type and through the manipulation ofthe scroll plate 10 the clamping lplates will then be tightly clamped in posi- 'I claim as new is:
