PAIER-HOLDER.
Specification of was Patent.
Patented May 17, 1921.
Application filed September 15, 1919. Serial No. 324,016.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. ZWILLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of-Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper holders and has for its object the provision of a device whereby a large number of sheets of paper may be securely clamped together for any desired purpose.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable whereby to hold varying numbers of sheets.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in service, durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device,
Fig. 2 is a plan view,
Fig. 3 is an end elevation,
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of one of the sliding clamping members, and
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the base of the device which is formed as a suitable board or the like. Rising from this base are spaced uprights 11 which have their outer faces provided with notches 12. The paper A to be held is placed upon this base 10 between the uprights 11.
The clamping member comprises a suitable board or plate 13 which is disposed between the uprights 11 and which carries at its ends clamping members designated broadly by the numeral 14. Each clamping member 14 comprises a plate 15 having formed thereon an arm 15 terminating in an attaching foot 15 screwed or otherwisesecured onto the board 13 and from this plate extends a preferably integral arm 16 which carries near one end a lug 17 and in termediate its ends an ear 18. Associated with. this arm 16 is an arm 19 which carries intermediate its ends an ear 20 pivotally connected with the ear 18 and which is provided near one extremity with a lug 21 opposite the lug 17. At its other end the arm 19 carries a'jaw 22 provided with teeth engaging the notches 12, it being understood that the adjacent or confronting face of the arm 16 slidably engages against the inner face of the upright 11. A coil spring 23 is disposed between the ends of the arms 16 and 19 and is engaged upon the lugs 17 and 21, for normally urging the jaw 22 into clamping engagement with the upright.
In the operation of the device it will be seen that when the sheets of paper are disposed upon the base 10 and the plate or board 18 is moved downwardly into clamping engagement therewith, this clamping engagement will be maintained by virtue of the jaws 22 which engage within the notches 12 in the upright. When it is desired to move the plate or board 13 in either direction, it is merely necessary that the operator press together the outer ends of the arms 16 and 19, whereupon the jaws 22 will be moved out of engagement with the jaws in the uprights so that the board or plate 13 may slide freely thereon. Another feature is the fact that the arms 16 and the jaws 22 carry guard members 24 and 25 respectively which bear against the edges of the uprights 11 for preventing dislocation of the parts.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple device whereby a small orlarge number of sheets of paper or the like may be securely clamped together, it being noted that the device is easily operable to release the paper and that it will efiiciently perform all the functions for which it is intended.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the ining members carried by said plate and engaging said uprights, each of said clamping members including a vertically disposed plate portion bearing against the inner side of the upright and formed with an arm terminating in an attaching foot secured to said first named plate, a lateral arm extending from said clamping plate, and a springpressed plate pivoted upon said last named arm and toothed for engagement with said notches.
2. A device of the character described comprising a supporting base, a pair of spaced uprights rising therefrom and having their outer faces formed with notches, a plate disposed between and terminating short of said uprights, and a pair of clamping members carried by said plate and engaging said uprights, each of said clamping members including a vertically disposed 20 plate portion bearing against the inner side of an upright and formed with an arm terminating in an attaching foot secured to said first named plate, a lateral arm extending from said clamping plate, a spring-pressed plate pivoted upon said last named arm and toothed for engagement with said notches, and a guard lug secured upon said second and last named plates and slidably engaging opposite edges of an upright.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature.
