Application filed March 5,
lie flat, or substantially so, for laundering purposes.
I A further object of the invention is to provide a parabola shaped sheet or body, the corners of which are foldable upon an intermediate part to produce a cap, with the portions between said ends and the points of fastening tucked or folded in, so that a complete enclosure is provided for protection against dust and the like.
lVith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims. v
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may under stand how to use and make the same, I will describeits construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which f Fig. 1, is a perspective view of a ladys cap constructed in accordance with my in-- vention looking at the inside, showing the folded-in portions unattached and a part of the cap broken away in the region of the back to show the location of the elastic band.
Fig. 2, is a perspective view ofthe cap shown upon a persons head.
Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a slight modification. Y
. Fig.4, is an. inside face or plan iew of the sheet of material or body from which the cap is formed.
In carrying out my invention, particular reference will be first made to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 wherein 5 represents the body of the cap or a sheet of material fashioned into aparabola shape providing a substantially straight front edge 6, and arcuate or convex side edges 7 and 8 meeting at the back or rear end of the longitudinal center of the body.
At the corners of the body are formed 1929. Serial No. 344,324.
button holes 9 and 10 for coaction with buttons 11 and 12 respectively located on the outside surface of the body along the arcuate edges adjacent the rear or back portion thereof. Other fastening means may be used in lieu of the buttons and button holes.
Between each button hole and its respective button and preferably closer to the button hole than the button is a fastening device 13 on the inside face of the body and said fastening device is preferably a member of a snap fastener adapted for engagement with a complementary fastening member 14 along the front straight edge of the body and substantially the same distance from a corner as the member 13 is from the same corner.
here the material from which the cap is to be formed is of very thin fabric, a binding 15 may be used. The capmay be ornamented by suitable devices, such as a ruffle 16.
Preferably the rear portion of the body has an elastic band 17 inserted between two points at opposite sides forward of the fastening devices or buttons 11 and 12 in order that the rear part of the cap may be stretched so as to fit different sized heads and the ends of the band being fixed forward of the buttons 11 and 12 any pull on the folded-in portions will not separate the fastenings 13 and 14, and if said elastic band is left in the cap during laundering thereof, the body will lie flat except where the elastic band has the rear port1on puckered, but if said elastic band is removed, then the body will lie absolutely flat,
as'shown in Fig. 4 and may be readily ironed. To iorm the body into a cap as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the corners are folded back until the button holes 9 and 10 can be placed over the buttons 11 and 12 respectively, thus producing a double ply folded-in portion 18 I I of substantiallytriangularshape as shown in Fig. 1 and if said fOldQd-lll POl'tlODS are provided with the fastening devices 13, they may becaused to engage the complementary fastening devices 14 in order tohold said folded-in portions snugly against the end portions of the front edgeand the excess length ofthe material between a but-ton, as
the button 12 and the fastening device13 will betaken up by that part of the elastic band between said button 12 and its point of-at tachment to the capbody.
In use, the forward edge of the body will lie'acros's the forehead of the wearer while that part of the body carrying the elastic band will lie around the rear of the head and the three plies of material forming each folded-in portion will be pressed together so as to securely close the space between the corners of the front'part of the body and the sides thereof when the former are folded over on the latter, thereby preventing entrance of dust or the like to the interior of the cap while in use.
That portion of the elastic band between the buttons 11 and 12 will pucker the rear part of the cap but allows the same to be straightened out to the extent of the material of the body between said buttons so that the cap will-be automatically adjusted to different slzes.
It will be readily understood that if de .sired, the elastic band can be eliminated but the cap will then be of a certain different siZe. IVhere the elastic bandis not used,-the'two button holes 9 and 10 at. the corners of the body may be caused to engage a single button 19 as shown in Fig. 3 in which instance the button -19 is located at the rear of the body on the median line thereof or at the point where the two arcuate side edges met.
Exactly thesame principle is embodied in this form of the invention and the two foldedin portions 20 are provided which are slightly larger than the'folded-in portions 18 but still 'are of triangular outline. In order to illustrate the several arrangements which can be employed, I have not shown fastening devices, such as 13 and 14 in Fig. 3, but it will be obvious from the description above that such fastening devices can be applied to the form shown in Fig. 3 without the necessity of further illustration.
i In this form of. the device, the forward straight edge of the body is given a predetermined length, thus determining the size of the cap which will be formed by the folding of the body.
A distinct feature of my invention is that the cap does not have to be formed prior to placing the same upon the head as it can be thrown back upon the head similar to a bandana or shawl and the corners then folded over on the back of the body and buttoned in place. By reversing the above actions, the cap can be removed. The advantage of placing the cap upon or removing the same from the head of the wearer is that the hair will not be disarranged.
It might be well to state at this time that the particular feature of my invention which is to be noted is that in folding the corners of the body over on the side edges or rear portion of the body, two folded-in sections are produced which positively close any opening which might otherwise exist between thefolded over portions so as to prevent the entrance of dust or similar material to the interior of the cap while in use.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what. I claim as new and useful is 1. A cap formed from a substantially parabola shaped body, having means at the corners and side edges for connecting said corners to said side edges with the interme diate portions folded in, and an elastic band at the edge to contract the arcuate edge of said body thereby producing a fullness in the back part of the cap crown. I
2. The structure set forth in claim 1 in combination with separable fastening means carried by the front edge of the body and the intermediate portions which are folded in to provide for attaching said, folded-in portions to the front edge of the body.
3. A cap formed froma sheet-of fabric to produce a body having a front straight edge and front side corners, the corners of. said body being folded over the side edges there of and connected thereto by separable fastening means at the corners and points intermediate the ends of the side edges in separated relation to each other, the intermediate portions of said folded over parts being folded in, separable fastening means to attach said folded-in portionsto the front edge of the body and an elastic band in the edge of the body between points forward of the fastening means on the side edges of said body for the purpose stated- 4:. A cap formed from a substantially parabola shapedv sheet of material providing a front edge and arcuate convex side edges meeting at the rear on the median line of the body, an elastic band in the rear portions of the side edges with the ends fixed to the body for gathering the material of the body between said ends, fastening means at the corners for separable engagement with fastening means along the side edges on the outer surface of the body and rearward of the attached ends of the elastic band when said corners are folded over the outside of the side edges of said body and the intermediate portions of said folded over parts projecting inside of said folded over parts. r
5. The structure set forth in claim 4 in combination with means for fastening the folded-in portions to the front edge of the cap body.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
