The invention is a device having a golf ball on a cord which is arranged so that as the ball is struck it will operate a recording device which will record the pressure resulting from the stroke and also the approximate distance the ball should travel.
One object of the invention is to provide a testing device for golf strokes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a practicing device for golf players.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy having a golf ball attached to a stand by a cord. I
Another object of the invention is to provide an amusement device having a golf ball attached to a stand by a cord so that the power of strokes by golf clubs may be recorded.
A further object of the invention is to provide a recordingdevice which may be operated by the pull of a ball on a cord.
And a still further ob'ect of the invention is to provide a golf device which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a stand, a vertical slidable bar in the said stand having graduations thereon, a slidable horizontal member adaptable to raise or lower the said vertical member, releasable means for holding the said vertical member and a ball attached to the said horizontal member by a cord. In the drawings the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral 1 indicates the stand, numeral 2 the vertical slidable member and numeral 3 the slidable horizontal member.
The stand 1 may be made of any suitable material and of any suitable design. In the design shown it is providedwith a vertical cylindrical portion 4 having a base 5 and a head 6. The base may be held to a flat surface by screws 7 extending through openings 8 as shown, however it is also understood that nails may also be used in place of the screws.
and also that the device may be held to the ground by wood pegsor any other suitable means.
In the upper part of the device is a tubular member 9 in which the rectangular shaped member 2 is slidably mounted. The lower end of the member 9 may be crimped as shown at the point 10 and the upper end may be provided with a fiat plate 11 which may be held to wood inserts 12 by screws 13. It will be noted that in this arrangement the base or stand 1 is molded out of concrete or some other suitable plastic material, however it is also understood, as hereinbefore stated, that the stand may be made of cast iron or any kind of metal plate or any other suitable material. In the upper end of the member 9 is a cam shaped member. 14: that is pivotally mounted on a pin 15 andprovided witha handle 16 that extends upward throughan opening in the plate 11 as shown. It will be noted that the member 14 will bear against the vertical member 2 and as the vertical member 2 raises it will be gripped and held by the member 14: so that the device will register until the member 14 is released by pressing downward on the handle 16.
The member 3 is made of a round bar with threads 17 adjacent its inner end andits inner end turned down to. a smaller diameter as indicated by the numeral 18. The opposite end of the member 3 is slotted and a plate 19 is pivotally held in the slot by a pin 20. The member 3 is slidably mounted in sleeves 21 and 22 which are held in the. sides of the member 1. An angular shaped bar 23 is screwed on the member 3 and heldin an up right position by the walls of a recess24 in which it is mounted. The upper end ofthe member 23 slopes down as shown in Figure 1 and the lower end of the member 2 rests upon it so that as the member 23 is drawn for ward it will raise the member 2. The member 3 is also provided with a spring 25 which will return the member 23 to the position shown as soon as the pressure is released. It will be noted that the plate 19 bears against a plate 26 at the end of the sleeve 21 and as the pressure is applied to a cord 27 that is attached to the plate by a clevis 28, it will pull the plate 19 toward either side so that it will draw the member 3 outward. It will be noted that either of the outer corners of the plate 19 will bear against the plate 26 so that the central portion of the plate will move slightly outward to move the member 3. A golf ball as indicated by the numeral 29 may be attached to the outer end of the cord by a. link 30 which may be attached to an eye 31 projecting out of the ball. It is understood that the cord 27 may be of any suitable length and made of any suitable material.
It will also be noted that in the design shown a portion of the cord and a golf ball are shown on a somewhat larger scale. A plate 32 may be attached to the base of the stand by screws 33 extending into wood inserts 34 as shown to cover the opening in the base of the stand.
It will be understood that changes maybe made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the shape or design of the slidable vertical member 2,21110tl181 may be in the use of other means for causing the member 2 to raise as the ball is struck and still another may be in the use of other means for holding the member 2 in the position to Which it is raised.
The construction may be readily understood from the foregoing description. In use ,the device may be assembled asshown with graduati-ons on one side of the vertical member 2 indicating the pressure with which the ball is struck and indications on the opposite side of the member 2 showing the approximate distance the ball would travel. '..hese graduations may be determined by actual tests. The device may be placed upon the floor or attached to any suitable surface as hereinbefore described and the ball may be placed to one side of the stand'so that it may readily be struck, and it will be observed that when the ball is struck it will pull the cable with a quick jerk so that the load will be recorded and it will then wind the cable or cord around a portion 4 of the stand. It will be noted that any suitable ball which may be of any suitable size may be used.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z 1. In a device of the class described, a stand, a Vertical slidable member in the said stand, a resiliently held horizontal member slidably mounted in the said stand directly below the said vertical member, a ball attached to the said horizontal member by a cord, means on the said horizontal memher for raising the said vertical member as it is drawn outward and readily releasable means for gripping and holding the said VGI-- tical member.
2. In a device of the class described, a portable stand, a golf ball attached to the said stand by a cord, a slidable member in the said stand to which the cord is attached, means for resiliently holding the said slidable mem' ber inward, an inclined surface attached to the said slidable member, and another slidable member with graduations on the sides engaging the said inclined surface.
In a device of the class described, a portable stand, a golf ball attached to the said stand by a cord, a slidable member in the said stand to which the cord is attached, means for resiliently holding the said slidable member inward, an inclined surface adjustably attached to thesaid slidable member, and another slidable memberwith graduations on the sides engaging the said inclined surface.
4. In a device of the class described, a portable stand, a golf ball attached to the said stand by a cord, a slidable member in the said stand to which is cord is attached, means for resiliently holding the said slidable member inward, an inclined surface attached to the said slidable member, another slidable member withgraduations on the sides engaging the said inclined surfaee, and means for gripping and holding the saidlatter slidable member.
5. In a device of the class described, a portable stand, a golf "ball attached to the I said stand by a cord, a slidable member in the said stand to which the cord is attached, means for resiliently holding the said slidable member inward, another slidable member with graduations on the sides, and means for causing the latter slidable member to move as the said cord exerts a force on the said former slidable member;
