The invention relates to fireproof doors for fireproof vaults, safes and the like. Doors for this purpose have included, according to the usual practice, a sheet or plate metal case filled with a fireproong compound having a substantial water content which is delivered therefrom when the door is subject to heat, and cools the case and the jamb frame on which the door is mounted.
It has been found that when such a vault door has been subject to fire and heat from the front, the front met-al sheet or plate sometimes warps and twists away from the rest of the case, leaving the lireproofing compound therein subject to the direct action of the heat and flames, which causes the compound to disintegrate and to crumble and drop away at the front, thereby admitting flames and heat to the vault or safe interior.
Accordingly the objects of the present improvements are to provide a construction for the door of a vault, safe and the like, which will permit the front plate thereof to drop entirely away therefrom under the action of heat, without causing the interior fireproofing compound to crumble and drop away as aforesaid.
These and ancillary objects are attained by a construction and arrangement which may be stated in general terms as including a reinforcing and mountingfor the fireprooiing filler of the door case, which mounting and reinforcing is secured to the case independent of the front plate and preferably solely at the back of the door, whereby the front plate thereofl may drop entirely away from the door case, without pulling with it the interior reprooling filler, or subjecting the same to disintegration.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, in which- The figure is a fragmentary isometric view of a detached door` made according to the improved construction, with portions broken away to more clearly illustrate the arrangement of the several parts.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The improved vault door indicated generally at l, includes a case 2 which may be made of sheet or plate metal and a lireprooling filler 3 for the interior of the case, and the filler may have a substantial water content which is delivered therefrom when the door is subject to heat and cools the case and the jamb frame upon which the door may be mounted.
The case is provided with a front wall preferably comprising a metal sheet or plate 4:, which, according to the present improvements, 1s preferably secured solely at its edges to the outer edges 5 of the c'ase side, top and bottom members, and a rear wall 5il is secured to the inner rear edges 5b thereof. Accordingly when the vault door is subject to fire and heat from the front, the front metal sheet or plate 4 may warp and twist away from the rest of the case. According to the usual construction, after the plate had become detached from the rest of the case, the iireprooling compound therein would itself be subject to the direct action of the heat and flames, and the compound would be caused to disintegrate and to crumble and drop away from the front, thereby admitting flames and heat to the vault or safe interior.
In the present improvements, however, the reproong filler is provided with a reinforcing and mounting secured to the door case independent of the front plate, and preferably solely at the back of the case.
This mounting and reinforcing may include transverse straps 6 having their ends secured at inwardly directed flanges 7, which may be adjacent but are preferably parts of the case back. Strap loops 8 are then secured as by spot welding at spaced intel'- vals along the transverse straps 6, and the legs of the loops preferably pass through the meshes of a preferably metallic fabric sheet 9 spaced relatively close to the front plate of the case.
This fabric sheet 9 is preferably of the maximum possible area to properly fit into the case, and is in itself a mounting and reinforcing for the fireproof filler 3 in which the fabric is embedded, the strap loops 8 carrying the slab thus formed of the filler and the fabric for support by the case back, independent of the case front plate.
For further strengthening and reinforcing the iireproof slab, and mounting the same upon the case independent of the front plate thereof, a plurality of laterally spaced vertically extending channel bars l0 may be passed through the loops 8, and have their inner longitudinal edges abutting the fabric,
forming in effect a studding secured to the case back by the loops and transverse straps, and provided with the lath fabric 9 secured to the studding.
By means of the foregoing mounting and reinforcing for the fireproong filler, secured to the case independent of the front plate, the front plate may entirely drop away from the case by the action of heat iames or other forces, and. the channel bars and fabric being secured to the back of the case will remain properly in place for retaining the iireproofing compound in front of the remaining parts of the case, whereby the same may deliver its water content to the case and the jamb frame upon which the case may be mounted.

A door fo-r a vault or the like including a door case having a front plate, a ireproof ing filler in the case, means independent of the front plate and secured solely to rear portions of the case and mounting and reinforcing the filler in the case and including a fabric spaced between the front and rear of the case.
4. A door for a vault or the like including a door case having a front plate, a fireproofing filler in the case, means independent of the front plate and secured solely to rear portions of the case and mounting and reinforcing the filler in the case and including bars spaced between the front and rear of the case and straps securing the bars to a rear wall of the case.
5. A door for a Vault or the like including a door case having a front plate, a fireproofing ller in the case, means independent of the front plate and secured solely to rear portions of the case and mounting and reinforcing the filler in the case and including a fabric spaced between the front and rear plates of the case and straps securing the fabric to a rear wall of the case.
6. A door for a vault or the like including a door case having a front plate, a fireproofing filler in the case, means independent of the front plate and secured solely to rear portions of the case and mounting and reinforcing the filler in the case and including bars and a fabric spaced between the front and rear walls of the case.
7. A door for a vault or the like including a door case having a front plate, a reproofing filler in the case, means independent of the front plate and secured to the case and mounting and reinforcing the filler in the case and including bars and a fabric spaced between the front and rear of the case, and straps securing the bars and the fabric to a rear wall of the case.
8. A door for a vault or the like including a door case having a front plate, a fireproofing filler in the case, means independent of the front plate and secured to the case and mounting and reinforcing the filler in the case and including bars and a fabric spaced between the front and rear of the case and loop straps securing the bars and the fabric to a rear wall of the case.
