@Alit TRUE This invention relates to car trucks and has special reference to the side 'frame, spring plank, spring and holster assembly, the object being to provide a novel construction t and arrangement of parts vvhereby the parts may loe readily assembled to form a truck, and, should it be necessary to remove a pair ot Wheels or, tor any other reason, it should be desired to remove a side frame, the operation may be performed at less labor cost and more expeditiously than has heretotore been possible. lit Will he seen readily that the constructionand arrangement ot parts herein :lisclosed provide a large spring capacity and V that the side frame together *with the springs resting on same :may be brought endwise directly into proper relation -vvith the bolster, spring plank and suoerimposed springs without any necessity tor vertical movement, should`it be desired to remove the side frame, the lrey 18 if used is withdrawn and the spring plank then jaclred up so that the studs locking it to the side frame Will he cleared whereupon the side frame may be moved bodily laterall from the bolster and the spring plank, leavlng the bolster, springs and spring plank undisturbed in their relations.
While the construction of the journal boxes is immaterial to the present invention; it may be stated that the invention is more generally embodied in side frames which are cast in one piece with integral journal boxes. When a side frame is to be removed, the Wedges and brasses of the journal bearingsvmust, of course, be released.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having a bolster-receiving opening therethrough, a bolster having portions abutting the inner walls of the bolster opening through the side frame longitudinally of the frame and in only one direction transversely and having its end disposed in said opening, a spring plank engaged in said opening, and springs carried by the spring plank and by the side frame and supporting the bolster.
2. In a car truck, the combination of a bolster having a plurality of projecting portions adjoining the side walls adjacent to the ends of the bolster, and a side frame having a bolster-receiving opening, the vertical surfaces of said opening abutting the sides and outside ends, but not the inside ends of the bolster projections.
3. In a car truck, the combination of a bolster having a plurality of 'projecting portions thereon adjoining the side walls adjacent the ends of the bolster, and a side frame having an upper and a lower member and columns connecting said members and forming a bolster-receiving opening, the columns being constructed to present an abutment surface in the longitudinal direction of the side frame and transversely in one direction only whereby to permit lateral removal of the frame Without interference from the bolster when in normal relation and the projections on the side walls of the bolster lying entirely within the side frame and gainst the abutment'surface when assem led.
4. In a car truck, the combination of a side framehaving an upper and-a lower member with columns connecting said members, and a bolster having pro ecting portions on its sides near its end', said columns being constructed with surfaces abutting the outer and lateral sides of said projections but free of the inner sides thereof, whereby to permit the lateral removal of the side frame without interference from the bolster in its normal relation to the springs and spring plank.
5. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame comprising an upper member, `a lower member, and columns connecting said members, a spring plank carried by the lower member of the side frame, springs carried by the spring lank, springs carried at least partially by tie side frame and disposed at least partially within the upright contour of the columns, and a bolster carried by the springs with its end disposed between the columns, the columns being arranged to permit lateral removal of the frames without interference from the bolster and the spring plank being normally interengaged with the side frame but releasable thcrefrom on application of a lifting pressure.
6. In a car truck, the combination of a 'side frame comprising an upper member, a lower member, and columns connecting said member and each having a web transverse to 'the side frame and aweb extending longitudinally of the frame from the outer edge of the transverse web toward the central vertical line of the frame, a. spring plank supported by the lower member between the columns, springs carried by the spring plan'k and by the lower member, and a bolster sup ported by the springs with its end extended between the columns, the bolster having wings abutting the inner sides of the longitudinal webs at the outer edges of the columns, the inner edges of the columns on the sides 'presented to the bolster being entirely within the planes of the sides whereby the bolster with its wings may be moved horizontally into assembled relation to the side frame.
7. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame comprising an upper member, a lower member, and columns connecting said members, the columns having vertical webs extending longitudinally of the side frame at the outer sides of the upper and lower members and further having near their upper ends vertical webs disposed transversely of the side frame, a spring plank carried by the lower member between the columns, springs carried by the spring plank and by the side frame, and a bolster restin on the springs and having its end exten( ing between the columns and provided near its end with lateral wings abutting said longitudinal and transverse webs of the columns.
8. In a car truck, a side frame comprising upper and lower members and columns connecting said members, the columns including inner and outer webs relatively offset longitudinally of the frame and transverse webs connecting said inner and outer webs near their upper ends, a spring plank sup orted by the lower member between the co umns, springs carried by the spring plan'k and by the side frame, and a bolster supported by the springs and having its end portion fittin between the inner webs of the columns and llO provided with lateral Wings abutting the outer and transverse Webs of the columns.
9. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having an upper and a lower 5 member with columns connecting said members, said columns being constructed with transverse portions and with outer portions disposed longitudinally of the side frame, a bolster having lateral projections engaging the inner faces of the transverse and longitudinal portions of the side frame columns,
and a key carried by the bolster and engageable with the outer surface of the outer longitudinal portion of a side frame column.
