This invention relates to car trucks and has special reference to six-wheel trucks of the type disclosed in patent to Larsen and J ohnson, No. 1,253,842, issued January 15th, 1918. The object of the present invention is to provide a truck which is adapted to cars having a low and wide sill construction, and also to produce a bolster structure which will be firm and secure with a minimum number of fastening elements. One embodiment of the 33 of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The truck comprises side frames 1, two on each side, which have their inner ends connected by an equalizer bar 2, these parts being of any approved form. The equalizer bar carries a bearing for the center axle and each side frame carries a bearing for an end axle; each side frame also has an opening 3 therethrough to receive the end of a transverse bolster 4 which is supported in the opening upon springs in the usual manner.
The transverse bolsters 4 are provided with vertical shoulders 5 on their sides between which the longitudinal bolsters 6 rest, and on top of the transverse bolsters are spaced perforated lugs 7 which mate with similar lugs 8 on the inner sides of the longitudinal bolsters adjacent the ends thereof, bolts or 1 locking pins 9 being inserted through said lugs to prevent separation of the parts. the outer corner portion of each longitudinal bolster is correspondingly beveled, as indicated at 11, to rest thereagainst, the abutting surfaces aiding in preventing transverse movement of the longitudinal bolsters. The ends of the longitudinal bolsters are formed into downturned hooks 12 which bear against the outer sides of the transverse bolsters and against the inner surfaces of the shoulders so that the relation of the parts will be maintained.
The longitudinal bolsters are located parallel with the side frames, one on either side of the central longitudinal line of the truck,
and on the top of each said bolster on the side "adjacent the wheels in an outwardly projecting shelf 13 which constitutes a support for the side bearing. On its inner side, at its center, each longitudinal bolster is provided with a recess 14 to receive one end of the center bolster 15, said bolster being centrally depressed to approximate the depressed formation of the end transverse bolsters, as will be understood upon reference to Figs. 3 and 4. The lower surface 15 of the recess 14 pro vides a firm support for the center'bolster while the outer wall 17 of the recess provides an abutment or stop against which the end of the center bolster may impinge whereby the transverse movement of said bolster will be limited and the bolster will be firmly held in place without the use of bolts or similar fastening devices. The center bolster is suitably constructed at its center, as indicated at 18, to form or carry a center bearing.
With this construction. the weight of the center bolster and the load thereon will retain the parts in position without the use of any fastening devices. The structure is well adapted to'car bodies having a low wide sill construction, and the entire load is transmit- Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is
1. In a six-wheel truck, the combination of two transverse bolsters, two longitudinal bolsters mounted at their ends on the transverse bolsters, each longitudinal bolster having a medial recess in one side thereof forming a supporting shelf, the free ends of main bolster being'carried by said shelves and extending only partially through the longitudinal bolsters.
2. In a six-wheel truck,1the combination of two transverse bolsters, two longitudinal hollow'bolsters mounted at their ends on the transverse bolsters and securely held in place I by locking lugs; each longitudinal bolster 'porting themain bolstem the said main 'bolstcrhaving a center bearing.
4. In a-siX-wheel truck-,the combination of truck side frames, transverse bolsters carried by the latter. two longitudinal bolsters supported at their ends on the transverse bolsters; and located adjacent the sides of having vertical shoulders on their sides and having lugs on their tops, longitudinal bolsters having their ends resting on the end bolsters and formed into depending hooks bearing against the outer sides of the end bolsters and the shoulders thereon, lugs on the inner sides of the longitudinal bolsters,
fasteners inserted through said lugs and the lugs on the end bolsters, and a center bolster having its ends freely engaged in and supported by the longitudinal bolsters.
