GRILLED-ROLL ALLOY.
No Drawing.
My invention relates to an improved alloy metal adapted particularly for the manufacture of chilled rolls used in shaping metal bars and plates.
Such alloys commonly consist mainly of iron, in combination with other elements in determined proportions, where-by desired characteristics are imparted; and my invention relates more specifically to an improved alloy in which 'a content .of vanadium is employed, in connection with carbon and chromium particularly as'hereinafter fully described, so as to most satisfactorily produce effects desired in a roll'having a chilled surface or primary structure'with a blended se ondary structure; it being noted that the elements mentioned have heretofore been differently employed by me in a roll alloy of different character as set forth in Carbon Chromium Vanadium; Silicon Manganese between .20 per cent and .70 per cent; the
50 percentage of the minor element sulphur. being between .04 and .08 per cent,-and of phosphorus between .02 and .05 per cent.
The vanadium element as employed in this alloy in connection with the carbon and 55 chromium content, is conserved without oxidation or scavenger action, so as to effect Application filed July 16,
1927. Serial No. 206,379,
Patent No. 1,213,973 issued to me Jan. 30, 20.
The essential feature of my present alloy" is the provision of a relatively high carbon content in connection with main alloy elements chromium and vanadium, and second ary elements silicon and manganese, ashereinafter specifically set forth; tninor elements sulphur and phosphorus being present as ordinarily occurs-without substantial effect on the desired characteristics imparted. I have found by various trials, that the proportions of these stated elements may be varied within limits without materially departing from the essential characteristics desired in my improved alloy, but state the following approximate percentages as most satisfactorily embodying my invention, as now determined, to wit:
. v Per cent. about 3.00 about 1.75 about .20 about 1.00 "about" .50
its essential functioning economically notwithstanding it is an expensive element, by
notably increasing the depth and homogeneity of the chilled primary andsecondary structure of the roll, with toughening and avoidance of cracks, aswell as insurance of ample strength to withstand the strains, and hardness to withstand the wear, incident to service.
What I claim is:
A chilled-roll alloy made up of approximately, 3.5 per cent of carbon, 1.75 per cent of chromium, .20 per cent of vanadium,
1.00 per cent of silicon, and .50 per cent of manganese, with minor content of sulphur and phosphorus. In testimonywhereof I aflix my signature.
