slidably mounted on the swing-member and spring-actuated downwardly in the direction of the base-bracket, and means by which the pull-member imparts to the flap-bracket a constant pressure in slantwise direction, downwardly and inclined inwardly in respect to the hood; v
In the attached drawing; Y
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the hood fastener when in fastened position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation showing the hood fastener in unfastened position.v
Fig. 4 is a sectional plan through 4-4 of Fig. 2.' v l Fig. 5 is a sectional plan through 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a portion of the flap of the hood. 2 is a portion of the base extension of the hood. 3 is the flap-bracket. 4 is the base-bracket. 5 is the swing-member pivoted on the pin 6, between the two washers 7, to the base-bracket. 8 is a collar secured to the swing-member. 9 is a member slidably mounted on the swing-member. 10 is the pull-member and is slidable on the collar 8. 11 is a member secured to the upper end of the pull-member. The member 9 is secured to the lower end of the pull-member and as the members 9 and 11 are each secured to the pullmember and thus partake of its movements, they maybe regarded as portions of the pullmember, as likewise the collar 8 a portion of the swing-member, and thus the pull-member is slidably mounted on the swing-member. 12 is a helical spring which cooperates with the swing-member 5 by means of itscollar 8 to press the pull-member downwardly 'towards the base-bracket. The portion 11 of the pull-member is provided with prongs 13 by which the operator manipulates the pull member to fasten and unfasten the hood. The portion'll ofthe pull member is provided with arms 14 with which the pull member cooperates with the flap-bracket to fasten the hood. The flap-bracket is provided with a pair of arms which extend embracingly, when the fastener' is-in fastened position, one on each side of the pullmember, and terminate in portions 15 to which the arms 14 of the spring actuated pull-,member imparts a pressure in slant-wise direction, downwardly and inclined inwardly in respect tothe hood. 16is .an extension of the base-bracket which serves ras a support to hold the pull-member when unfastened to the flap-bracketin the most conve-nient position for manipulating.
It should be noted (see Fig; 2) that the line of pressure, indicated by the arrow and numeral'17v, imparted by the spring by means of the pullmember to the flap-bracket, or, which is the same thing, the line oftension from the Contact of the pull member with tlieilapbracket to the base-bracket, leans farther away from the flap lof the hood,.than does the line-of pressure, indicated by the arrow and numeral 18, of the spring pressing the pullmember towards the base-bracket.
It should be understood that in order to eiciently fasten the flap of thefhood of an automobile, the direction of the pressure applied to the flap should be inwards as well v as downwards; otherwise a disagreeable rattling noise will occur whenthe automobile is in rapid motion. The proportion of the yinward to the downward pressure required va# ries in accordanceto theshape of the` hood but is constant for that particular form of hood. A yielding pressure applied in the correct slantwise direction will give the required proportionate inward and downward pressures. Hitherto, in most instances, this yielding pressure could not be applied in the correct slantwise direction with a fastener consisting merely of a flap-bracket, a basebracket, a swing-member pivoted to the hasebracket and a spring-actuated pull-member carried on the swing-member; and to remedy this, in many hood fasteners, added parts such as cams and links co-operate with the pull-member. But the fastener here illustrated and described, applies the pressure in the correct slantwise direction and also does not require the added partsl in order to be generally applicable.
' What I claimis:
` 1. In a hood fastener of the type which fastens the flapv by imparting pressure on it in slantwise direction both downwards and inwards in respect to the hood, a flap-bracket securedto the flap, a base-bracket secured to the base extension of the hood, a swing member pivoted on a pivot in the base bracket in the pull-member downwardly in the line'oi3 direction towards the pivot of the basebracket, and means by which the line ot' direction of the pressure exerted by the pull-member on the ilapbracket towards the said pivot leans outwardly in respect to v the iiap of theI line of direction of `the pressure exerted by the springon t-he pull-meniber towards the said pivot.
2. n a hood fastener of the type which fastens the flap by imparting pressure on it in a slanting direction both downwards and inwards in respect to the hood, a flap bracket secured to the flap, a base-bracket secured to the base extension of the hood, a swing' member pivoted on a pivot inthe base-bracket in a manner permitting a swing-like movement to and from t-he flap, a pull-member slidably mounted on the swing-member, a spring` carried by the swing-member and pressing the swing-member downwardly in the line of directionV towards the pivot ot' the bracebracket, the said flap-bracket having,` a pair of arms extending` one on each side oi' the pull-member, the said pull-member having a pair of arms extending crosswise and adapted to fasten the flap vby exerting;r pressure on the ends of thearms of the iiap bracket in the line et' direction towards the pivot oi the base bracket, and meansv by which the line of directionv of the pressure exerted by the arms ot' 'the pullv member on the arms of the flapbraoket towards the said pivot, leans outwardly in respect tothe flap of the line of direct-ion ot the pressure exerted by the spring onthe pull-member towards the said pivot.
3. In a hood fastener of the type which fastens the flap by imparting;l pressure on it in slantwise direction both downwards and inwards in respect to the hood, a flap-bracket arms of the a )-bi'acket to i'astcn the flap,
the said arms oi: the pull-member located on the side of the pull-member which is farthest from the i'lap.
