STRAP FOR AUTOMOBILE TOPS.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922.
Application filed August 2, 1921. Serial No. 489,220.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN 'l. BAKER, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at lrtlcxandria, in the parish of liapi'des and State of Louisiana, have invented certa n new and useful Improvements in Straps for Automobile Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to straps tor scouring automobile tops and more particularly to an adjustable metallic strap.
The object of the invention is to provide a flexible, metallic strap capable of Listment as to length, and more particularly to the structure by which such adjustment is made.
The invention consists in the novel. construction, arrangement and combination of tarts as hereinafter more particularly de scribed and claimed.
this sheet of drawings accompanies this specification, as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout. 7
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are plan views of difterent types oi? straps embodyingthe present invention;
l ig'ure 4i: is a fragmentary detail view in pca'spective showing the adjustment means;
Figure 5 is a medial longituiilinal section showing the adjustment means in locked position;
Figure 6 is a lraunientary edge view showing the connection of a strap with a securing device.
As usually constructed, automobile tops open upwardly and Forwardly l'rom the hack of" the car and are secured at the trout. To relieve the top and. back curtain oi the lauteuing strain, auxiliary straps are ad justed between the frame of the vehicle and. the rearmost transverse support oi? the curtain. Such straps when made of fibre or leather deteriorate, and unless promptly replaced, the entire top is injured.
To avoid the difficulties suggested, I provide a sheet metal strap 1 which may be pivotally connected to a link member 10 adapted to be secured by a fastener 11 to the car body and having its other end provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced holes 2. A second piece of strap sheet metal. 5 is bent around a suitable ring 9 into two arms 66. In place of ring 9 the strap may be secured to any suit-able fastener such as 9 or 9 adapted to be fastened to the ear. The arm 6 is provided with an inwardly projecting stud 7, while the arm 6 is provided with a hole 8 oppositely disposed relative to the stud. 7 and adapted to receive the same. A slide runner 3 having finger grasp 4- and an orifice sulficiently large to embrace three thickilesseu of the metal strap, is slidably positioned upon strap 1, which strap 1 is adapted to be received between arms 6-6 so that stud 7 will pass through one of the holes 2 and then through the hole 8 in arm 6 after which runner 3 can be slipped down holding and interlocking the members in close engagement as illustrated in Figure 5.
The metallic straps may be covered with cloth 12 or other material, as may be desired, and modifications in their size and form will. readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to adapt the device t r use with various types of cars.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination ot a metallic strap having" a hole adjacent one end and a loop member having two adjacent arms, an inwardly directed stud secured to one ot said arms, the other arm being provided with a hole adjacent to and adapted to receive said stud, and means for holding" said arms with relation to said strap.
2. The combination oi a metallic strap having a perforation adjacent one end, a second metallic strap bent in substantially U form and having an inwardly directed stud secured to one leg, the other leg being provided with a hole to receive said stud, and a sleeve member adapted to slide on said metallic strap and embrace the same together with the free ends of said U memher.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANKLIN TIMOTHY BAKER, Jr.
