Description

J. J. SULLIVAN PRINTERS FRAME Feb. 12, 1929.

Patented Feb. 12, 1929.
UNI D STATES PATENT-OFFICE.
I JAMES J. SULLIVAN, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PBINTERS FRAME.
Application filedMarch 17, 1927. Serial No. 175,990.
This invention relates to printers frames and particularly to devices of this class which might be termedan adjustable jogger frame or a frame for preventmg print ofise'ttmg;
and the object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the class specified comprising two pair of frame parts, each being Sui? rad L-shaped in form in cross section as well as in.
planforming side members arranged at right angles to each other, the frames in each pair being of similar construction and arrangedwhereby all ofthe members of the frame may be retainedin a given position of adjustment; a still further object beingto provide a frame of the class described, which by reason of the adjustment of the members employed may be fixed to form a square or oblong chamber within the upright walls of said members to receive printed sheets of predetermined size, the dimensions of the frame being such as to pern'iitof slow or fluttering placement of the printed sheets,,and the stacking of same in said frame; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in. a device of the class and for the purpose specified,
which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and which-1s constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.-
lowing specification, of which the accompany ing drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each'of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a frame made according to my invention;
Fig. a section on the line 2..2 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 3 shows perspective detail views of one member of each pairof members employed in the construction of the frame. I v I In carrying my invention into effect, I pro vide two frame members or parts 5 and 6 as shown in detail in Fig. 3 of the drawing,and two of each of said members are employed.
Thus, my improved frame is constructed of' two pairs of 'members,the members of the respective pairs being identical in construction. 7 I v r The member 5 is substantially L-shaped in plan orprovided with side portions 7 and 8 arranged at right angles to each other, said side portion'sbeing arranged vertically when the device is in use, and their lower ends are provided with outwardly extending base portions 9 and 10 respectively. Secured to said base portions are upwardly extending screws orthroaded pins 11, preferably arranged adjacent the outer or free end portions of the sides 7 and 8.
-The'othcr'part 6 is of the same general form as the part-5 and has sides 12 and 13 haying outwardly extending base portions 14 p and 15 respectively, andthe upper edges of the sides 12 and 13 are provided with downwardly directed flanges 16 and 17 forming channels 18 in which the upper edges of the sides 7 and 8 of the members 5 operate. Likewise,'th e base portions 14 and15 are provided with inwardly turned flanges 19 and 20 form- .ingchannels in whichthe outer edge portions of thebase parts 9 and 10 of the members 5 operate. With this construction, I provide a telescoping ad ustment of each of themembers 5 with respect to the members 6.
It willbe :noted .upon a consideration of I 1 and 2 of'the drawing that the screws or pins 11 are arranged on the base portions 9vand 1O inwardly of the flanges 19 and 20. In practice, washers 21 are preferably mounted upon the pins 11 and operate within the flanges 19and 20, while other washers 22 are mounted on the pins 11 outwardly of said flanges, and winged or other nuts23 are in The invention is fully dlsclosed 1n the folstood that the frame may be adj ustedto provide a rectangular square frame or an oblong frame; for example, in viewing Fig. 1 of the I I drawing, the sides of the-frame at the top and. bottom of said figuremay be extended,
maintaining the spaced relation of the sides.
of the frame at the left and right hand of said figure, or the latter sides of the frame may bev extended, maintaining the spacing of the that all of the sides may be extended or contracted to increase or decrease the dimensions of the frame within the limits of the members 56 employed. It will also be understood that the frames may be made of any size to suit work-pieces or printed matter of any kind or class. v
in the use of the device, the frame is mounted on the delivery or receiving table for the printed sheet-s when removed from the press in any type of delivery, and the printed sheets are placed upon the top of the frame in such manner as to enter thechamber 24 formed between the side walls of said frame, note Fig. 2. The dimensions of the chamber 24 will be such as to substantially correspond with the dimensions of the sheet or sheets 25 to be placed therein, whereby a slow or fluttering descent of said sheets is provided, thus allowing sufiicient time for the print on said sheets to dry before stacking the chamber 24:, and it will be understood that the adjustment of the frame members will control the rapidity of the descent.
My improved frame will prevent what is known as print otlsetting, which is commonly experienced by printers. By providing the slow stacking or piling of the printed sheets in the manner herein set out, and adjusting the frame to suit the delivery of a predetermined press, the print offsetting commonly experienced is obviated in a simple, efiicient and practical manner. It will be unc erstood that the pocket of air formed beneath each printed sheet placed in the frame serves to support said sheet, and the clearance provided at the corner portions of the members 5 of the frame will be sufiicient to allow for the slow escapement of this air,
and assuming that the print on the sheets 3e directed downwardly, the quick drying of the print is readily effected. 1
llt will be understood'that my invention is not limited to the specific form of'construction herein shown and described with respect to the detail structure of the pairs of frame members and the means for retaining the same in different positions of adjustment. Various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and 'described may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I In a frame of the class described, two frame members, one of said members having vert *al wall portions arranged at right angles to each other, and base portions arranged at right angles to said wall portions, the other member being of similar construction and the upper ends of the wall portions being flanged to engage the walls of the first named member, the base portion of the second named member havmg inturned flanges torming guide channels in which the base portions of the first named members are placed in coupling said members together and for coupling one frame member with the other, and screws secured to the base portions of the first named frame member adjacent the free ends thereof, said screws extending,
upwardly and being arranged inwardly of the inturned flange on the base of the second named member.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as n i invention 1 have signed my name this 12th day of March, 1927.
' JAMES. J. SULLIVAN.
