UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE;
, EDWIN r. M. SPEIDEL AND KARL o. nuennsrnm, or CBANSTON, nrronn ISLAND, sAin r AUGENSTEIN ASSIGNOB r0 SAID SPEIDEL. p o v nx'rnnsron niivrcn Application filed August 24, 1928. Serial No. 361,840.
This invention relates to a foldable extension device for a wrist watch strap andhas for its object to provide a means for detachably securing the end of one of the sections of the device to the bail of a wrist-watch so that the same will not accidentally be disconnectedtherefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hook formation on the end of one of the plate sections with a movably mounted closure member for the hook opening so mounted as to positively close the opening to the hook and prevent detachment of a section from the watch. I j
The invention further consists in means for locking the closure member in its working position and the provision of means for assisting in controlling its movement.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a watch with an extension device of our improved construction mounted on either side thereof.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device with its sections in unfolded position.
Figure 3 is a View similar to FigureQ showing the underside of the sections.
Figure 4 is a bottom view of the endsection which detachably engages the watch bail with the closure member in working position, I c
Figure 5 is a perspective view similar to Figure 4: showing the closure member in open position.
Figure 6' ure 4. e c
Figure 7 is a central longitudinal section through the end section, shown in Figure &, with the closure member in working position.
Figure 8 is a sectional view similar to Figure 7 showing the closure member in openv position as illustrated in perspective in Figure V In extension devices of the type designed to directly engage the hail of a wristwatch, it is found desirable to provide a means by which the device may be easily and quickly attached or detached to the watchbail and yet one which will positively preventthe (ic is a scan on line 66 of Figvice from becoming accidentally detached.
from the watch, and in order to accomplish this result, we have formed one end of a plate sectionof the deviceinto'a suitable hook to hingedly engage the bail of a wrist watch and have mounted on this plate section a closure member to slide along the plate and close the entering opening to the hook to'prevent detachment thereof from the watch, and
in orderto positively secure this closure member in its closed or working position, we
have formed frictional engaging detent and recess means carried respectively by the closure member and plate section for looking the closure member in working position,f
and following is a detailed description of'the present embodiment of this invention, showing the preferred means by which these advantageous results are accomplished:
With referenceto the drawings, 10 designates a wrist watch having bails 11 at either side thereof to which the foldable extension 22 on the'difierent sections.
The end section 15 which engages the watchhas a hook shape formation-23 on'one end witha suitable opening 24 for insertion of the watch bail 11 therein, the hook is on the arc of a circle'to form a pivotal bearing for swingably or hingedly attaching this end section to the watch bail. i
In order to close the opening 524 to prevent accidental detachment of this section from the ball'll, a closure member 25 is provided to extend across the opening 24 and has fingers 26 extending therefrom and bent around closure member to snap into engagement v with an opening 28 in the plate section 15. in opening movement of the closure member to assist in retaining the device in folded position and prevent accidental opening thereof by a longitudinal strain on the de vice.
It will be observed that the connection of the plate section to the wrist watch is a simple construction but yet positive in itsoperation to prevent accidental detachment of the device from the watch but yet allow easy removal by suitable manual manipulation.
The foregoing descripton isdirected solely towards the construction illustrated, but we desire it to be understood that we reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechani cal changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
Claims directed broadly to the features herein shown are presented in our copending application Serial No. 2:38AM), and also claims to the clasp for the sections herein shown are made the subject of ourcopending application Serial No. 301,683.
lVe claim 1. A foldable extension device for a wrist watch strap comprising a plurality of sections hinged together, hook means carried by the end of one of said sections of a width as wide as the section to detachably engage the bail of a Wrist watch and means for locking said section in engaged position. I
2. A foldable extension device for a wrist watch strap comprising a plurality of sections hinged together, a hook carried by the end or" one of said sections and of a width as wide as the section to detachably engage the bail of a wrist watch and a closure member mov ably mounted on said section to close the entering opening to said hook to hold the section in engagement with the watch.
3. A foldable extension device for a wrist watch strap comprising a plurality of plate sections hinged together, a hook'lcarriedby sections hinged together to told one over the spectively on said member and plate to hold the member in closed position.
5. A fold-able extension device for a wrist watch strap comprising a plurality of plate sections hinged together to told one over the other, the end of one of said sections having a hook formation with an opening to receive and swing on the bail of a wrist watch, a closure member on one side of said hook section having fingers bent; around said plate section to guide said member and permit sliding movement thereof on the plate to close the opening to the hook formation.
afiix our signa- In testimony whereof we tures.
