BRACELET CONSTRUCTION Filed June 24, 1937 Patented Dec. 26, 1939 i devies 2,184,319 BRACELET CoNs'rnnorioN Adolf O. Schoeninger, Irvington, N. .1., assigner to Forstner Chain Corporation, a corporation of New Jersey Application June 24, 1937, Serial No. 150,039
Il Claims.
My present invention relates to the jewelry art, and has particular reference to bracelet constructions.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide an improved extensible bracelet for use with wrist watches, ornaments, and the like. It is a further object of my invention to provide a simple, easily operated arrangement for setting the length of the bracelet to t the wrist of the wearer.
It is an additional object of my invention to provide an improved end connection arrangement for securing the bracelet ends to a wrist watch or the like.
Another object of my invention is to utilize parts made of sheet metal and the like which are strong and sturdy and which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in View, my invention consists.
, of a novel arrangement of parts more fully dis,-
closed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more specically defined in the claims appended thereto.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the assembled bracelet construction;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 7; e
Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, the parts being separated;
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the adjustable base;
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the cooperating catch;
Fig. 6 is a plan View of a construction suitable for leather bracelets, the parts being separate;
Fig. 7 is a similar view, the parts being assembled;
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of Fig.` 7;
Fig. 9 isa perspective view of the novel end connection for use with a narrow bracelet of the type shown in Fig. 1; v l
Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. 9, the parts being in open position; p
Fig. 11 is a perspective View of the end connection base; and
Fig. 12 is a perspective view of the end connection lock ring.
Referring to the drawing, the novel bracelet construction I0 includes a strap II and a cooperating strap l2, secured to a watch or the like by novel end connections I3. The straps are preferably made of exible metal, and particularly for narrow bracelets, the strap i2 having a slidably adjustable base Ifl, and the strap I I a cooperating hook catch i5, the end of the strap i2 having II.
The base lf2, see Fig. 4, includes a frame I l, preferably of sheet metal, having a atlower plate i8 and side edge plates I9 of preferably rounded shape, a clamp plate 20 of sheet metal having integral side ears 2l which are seated in corresponding openings 22 in the edge plates i9 so as to have a limited motion to and from the lower plate, a pivot pin 23 being seated at its ends in the edge plates to serve as a pivotal support for a cam plate 2t, which is preferably curved as illustrated, and has a cam 25 for engaging the clamp plate to force it towards the lower plate to lock the strap therebetween. The cam plate is cut away as illustrated in Fig. 4, where-v by the hook 2t of the catch Iii may lockingly engage the pivot pin 23. As best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the catch l5 has a base portion 2'! with side edges 2&3, a pivot pin 29 beingmounted between the side edges 23 at one end to receive a loop or. similar connection Sil of the strap II, and a second pivot pin 3i being mounted between the side edges 28 at the other end to pvotally a loop it slidably embracing the strap mount the endv 32 of a member 33 which has a closure element SlIhingedthereto, a spring 35 being mountedon the pivot pin 3| to normally urge the member i'away from the base portion 2l, whereby the closure element which passes through a slot in the base portion 2l, may move upwardly, see Fig. 2, to close the end of the hook 2S. The end of the closure element is formed to be engaged by the iinger nail to be moved against the action of the spring 35 for opening the hook 25 to permit removal of the hook from the'pin 23; a secondary linger lever may be used, if desired, hinged to the element 34.
The above described arrangement may be readily adapted for Wider bracelets, such as for example illustrated in Figs. 6 to 8, which are preferably made of leather. The parts are generally similar to the parts shown in Figs. l to 5, and are indicated by similar reference characters having the letter a as part thereof.
' It is preferred to use a novel form ofend connection with the described type of bracelet, see Figs. 1, and 9 to l2 inclusive. The end connection I3 includes a circular frame 36 of channel cross-section, having an opening or slot 3l at one end thereof and a detent 38 at the opposite end. A ring 39 is seated in the frame, having a lock portion 40, and two spaced teeth or projections 4I opposite thereto, a depression 42 being positioned between the teeth 4I and diametrically opposite the lock portion 40, for cooperating with the detent 38. An opening or slot 43 is positioned intermediate one tooth 4I and the lock portion 40, to permit passage of a watch bail such as indicated at 44, Fig. 1.
With the parts assembled as shown in Fig. l0, the end 45 of the strap is positioned between the teeth 4I, and the slot 43 permits passage of the bail 44 to engage the end connection. The end 45 is now turned, and the ring 3B also turns, because of the teeth 4|, until the lock portion 40 bridges the opening 31 to lock the strap end and the watch bail together, the depression 42 cooperating with the detent 38 to prevent accidental turning of the ring 39 in its frame.
While I have described specic constructional embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the shape and size of the parts, in the relative arrangement of the parts, and in the materials used may be made to suit diierent designs for bracelets, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In a bracelet construction, two straps, one strap having a loop at one end and the other strap extending through said loop, the first strap having a slidable base comprising a lower plate and a movable plate respectively positioned on opposite sides of said strap, said lower plate having edge plates, a pivot pin having its ends secured to said edge plates, and a cam element hingedly mounted on said pivot pin and movable to press said movable plate into gripping engagement with said strap, and the second strap having a member at one end, said member having a fixed portion engageable with said pivot pin and a spring-pressed lock adapted to be normally positioned at the end of said hook to releasably lock said hook in engagement with said pin.
2. In a bracelet construction, two straps, one
strap having a loop at one end and the other strap extending through said loop, the iirst strap having a slidable base comprising a lower plate and a movable plate respectively positioned on opposite sides of said strap, said lower plate having edge plates, a pivot pin having its ends secured to said edge plates, and a cam element hingedly mounted on said pivot pin and movable to press said movable plate into gripping engagement with said strap, and the second strap having a member at one end, said member having a hook engageable with said pivot pin and a spring-pressed lock member normally positioned adjacent the end of said hook to prevent disengagement of said hook from said pivot pin and manually movable to permit disengagement therefrom.
3. In a bracelet construction provided with a detachable end connector having a hook portion, a slide lock for said bracelet, said slide lock having a lower plate with edge plates, a movable plate mounted in said edge plates and movable towards said lower plate, a pivot pin secured to said edge plates, and a cam element having spaced ears hingedly mounted on said pivot pin, said cam element having a recess between said ears whereby the hook portion of said end connector may be detachably engaged with said pivot pin, said cam element having a cam engageable with said movable plate.
4. In a bracelet construction provided with a detachable end connector having a hook portion, a slide lock for said bracelet, said slide lock having a lower plate with edge plates, a movable plate mounted in said edge plates and movable towards said lower plate, a pivot pin secured to said edge plates, and a cam element hingedly mounted on said pivot pin, said cam element having a recessed portion adjacentY said pvot pin whereby the hook portion of said end connector may be detachably engaged with said Pivot pin, said cam element having a cam engageable with said movable plate.
