Description

March 3l, 1931. H. M. JARvls ATTORN EYE?.
Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i HENRY M. JARVIS, OF WINFIELD, KANSAS, .ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTI-IS T CLARION GEORGE COX, OF WINFIELD, KANSAS PUMPING- JACK Original application filed April 11, 1927, Serial No. 182,788.` `Divided and this application tiled May 16,
1929. Serial rthis invention relates to improvements in pumping jacks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision o' an improved pumping jack of the type set forth in my copending application, Serial No. 182,778, filed April 11, 1927, of which application the present application is a division; the present invention relating to a sprocket chain type of operating unit, the
lo throw ot which may be adjusted to vary the pump throw.
@ther objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
'i5 in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose oi illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved pumping jack.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the improved pumping jack of Figure 1.
liigure 3 is a sectional View taken through detafls et the improved pumping jack substa-utially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Si* in the drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A may generally designate the improved pumping jack. In connection therewith a rack bar or 30 toothed member 25 is provided, which is connected by a suitable clamp 26 in axial alignnient with the polish rod 27 of well pumping equipment. As is well understood by those skilled in the art, the polish rod 27 vertically extends thru a suitable stuffing box or packing .26 above a casing head 29. The rack member preferably straight and vertical, having teeth 30 arranged along one side thereof. At its lower end it may be attached to the clamp lo 26 in any approved manner, such as set forth in my co-pending applicaton above mentioned, and at its upper end it is provided with a swivel eye or hook 32.
'lhe frame of the improved pumping jack t5 preferably includes the parallel base pieces 55 and 56, bolted as at 57 in rigid relation upon the well platform, to one side of the casing head 29. Legs 60 and 61 are connected at the outer sides on the ends of each of the base pieces 55 and 56; the said legs being preferably of angle iron and detachably bolted i into position as at 62 and 63 respectively. On each of the base pieces and 56, the legs 66 and 61 extend upwardly in relative convergence, and at their upper ends they are secured together in any approved manner, as
by .means of riveting. In the approved construction a pair of vertical standards 64 and 65 are respectively detaehably bolted as at 66, at their lower ends, upon the intermediate portions of the base pieces 55 and 56. The vertical standards 64 and 65 are very strong and preferably oi plate or bar material, or they may be of channel formation, if desii-ed. The same are connected 'at the inner sides of the pieces 55 and 56 respectively, and extend upwardly in spaced parallelism, and,
at their upper ends, they are suitably secured to the legs 60` and 61 described, and provided with bearing segments 7 O and 71. With these segments and 71 there are provided detachable bearing caps 72 yand 73 respecfV tively, in a complementary relation, for rotatably receiving the master gear Wheel shaft 75. This shaft at its ends projects beyond the outer sides of the bearings, and at its outer ends it is provided with detachable caps7 6, held in position in an j approved manner, to permit the said sha t 75 to rotate freely against end movement.
The legs 61 are preferably rigidly braced by cross pieces 78 to their adjacent standards 6-/1- and 65, as the case may be; it being the purpose to providethese braces 78 mainly to hold the standards 611 and 65 in a stable deiinite spaced relation, since the frame is adapted to be swung upon the pivot pin 63 after detachament oi the bolts 62` and 66 from the base pieces 55 and 56. Such pivoting con-` radiating therefrom for the support of a rim 168. This rim 163 has teeth 164 thereon meshing With the teeth 30 of the rack 25.
The shaft 75 .also supports a small sprocket 5 Wheel lfthspoliesfof which"are"clamped with thespokes162'of`the gear 160 bymeans of U-bolts 171, to key the same together; For this im?, et, investies -fl sha1? 90 isieseft. having the ends thereohf bearing in adjustable plates 100 and 101, which are bolted as at 106 onto the standards 64 yand 65, in any ofthe side series of openings 107 Which are provided't'herealong Rotat'a'ble on thesl'ait" 90 gis a sprocket Wheel 180, larger than' the' sprocket wheel 17 0, and keyed with the said spvifockelt 170 "for rotation, by meansV 0ff`ie1ldl's-si5f0cket @haie ,181# A Preferunfderpulljfible183 is connectedat 184` With'laicsprkaveel lofprefembly ad- 2'ljzicent" tliereoftfor` the purpose of Wheel; 180.
