Description
- S. SEGAL DISPLAY BOX Filed May 4, 1929' INVENTOR. 4 ,44, M, M a M A TTORNEY S.
Patented Oct. 28, 1930 SAMUEL SEGAL, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
DISPLAY Box Application filed May 4,
T;his invention relates to a display device and aims to provide an article of this characterhaving structurally and functionally im proved characteristics over devices of this type as heretofore provided.
It is an object of'the invention to furnish a display device, theparts of which will be relatively few in number and rugged and simple in construction, these parts being capable of ready manufacture at a nominal figure, and being,'moreover, capable of be-' ing assembled to provide an article which will attractively display merchandise and may be used frequently Without the'necess ty of repairs. 7 Another object of the invention 1s that of furnishing a display device which will efi'ec t'ually house and protect articles during shipment and by means of which subsequently they may be effectively displayed.
lVith these and further objects in mind," reference is had to the attached'sheet of drawings illustrating practical embodiments of the invention and in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a display box and showing the same in their closed and open positions respectively;
Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary sectional views of different types of construction which may be employed, and j Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective Views of pin-- tles which may form parts of the structure.
In these views reference numeral 10 indi-' cates a receptacle body whichis conveniently formed of sheet metal and with which a lid 11 is associated. This lid may likewise em brace a body of sheet metal and be formed with depending flanges 12 overlying the upper edges of the bod in order to provide in conjunction therewith a proper joint, guarding against the entrance'of foreign matter into the interior of the receptacle.
7 The receptacle body mayparticularly in the instance of cigar boxes'be lined with suitable wood material arranged in the form of sheets or strips 13. With a view to securing the lid to the box part, both of these elements may be formed with hinge portions i 14: maintained in operatively association by pintles 15, which extend through the bores of end portion 16, with which a cord 18 is associated.

these portions. 'These pintles'are-as is cust0n1ary-in the form of pins, and, as shown 1H F 1g. 5, they may term nate 1n outer offset or as 1n Fig. 6, 1n a loop 17,
I In use, the pintles are extended through the'hingeportions after the lid has been placedin association .with the box body. Thereafter, it is obvious that the lid may be swung freely with respect to the body and" the latter may be filled with any desired commodit-y such as, for example, cigars and cigarettes. After the receptacle has been opened for the purpose of dispensing its contents, it
may readily be arranged in display position I by simply withdrawing the pintles which per mits of a detachment of the lid from the box body. Such detachment may be facilitated by the offset ends of the pintles heretofore described, or by the use of the cords alsd previously referred to. In any event, the lid is now arranged so that its rearmost flange underlies the rear edge of the box body and, in such position of the parts, it will be observed that the openings 19 and 20 formed in the box and lid, respectively, align with each other. Consequently, the pintles may now be employed in order to secure the parts against relative movement, in that with such v parts in the position aforementioned, the in ner face of the lid will bear against the rear face of the box body to assurethis result.
It will be observed that the openings 19 may either be in line with a spaced extent between the liner provided by the strips 13 and the innerface of the box body, or if desired, these strips may be recessed as has been indicated at 21, in Fig. 4, in order to accom- In either event the desired results of rigidity and effective display, are achieved.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that, among others, the several objects specifically aforereferred to, are achieved. It will,
moreover, be appreciated that numerous changes in construction and rearrangement of the parts might be resorted to readily, without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims. V
Having described my invention what 1"" claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A display device including, in combination, a receptacle, alid, hinge portions forming a part of said lid and receptacle, pintles to extend through the bores of said hinge port-ions, and said lid and receptacle being each formed with openings to one side of and additional to said bores to receive said pintles, whereby to retain said lid against movement with respect to said receptacle and in a position substantially at right angles to the base thereo't'.
2. A display device including a receptacle, a lid, hinge portions forming a part of said receptacle and lid, 'pintles to enter the bores of said hinge portions, said pintles being movable, and said receptacle and lid being each formed with openings to align wi h each other and to receive said pintles said openin 's beingdisposed to one side of the bores of said hinge portions whereby to retain said lid extending at an angle, said receptacle being fixed against movement with respect to the same.
3. A display device including a receptacle, lining material Within said receptacle, hinge portions forminga part of said receptacle, a lid to close said receptacle, iinge portions forminga part of said lid, pintles to extend through the bores of said hinge portions, and said receptacle and lid being each formed with openings to one side of said bores and to receive said pintles subsequent to their Withdrawal from the bores of said hinge portions, and to retain said lid fixed with respect to said receptacle, the openings in the latter being in a plane beyond the inner face of said lining material.
4%. A display device including a receptacle,
lid, a downwardly extending flange forming a part or said lid, hino'e portions associated with said lid and receptacle, pintles to enter the bores of said hinge portions to swingingly retain the lid with respect to said receptacle, and the body ofthe receptacle and flange of said lid being formed with openings to accommodate said pintles subsequent to their withdrawal from the hinge portions, whereby to retain said lid in elevated position and rigid with respect to said receptacle.
In testin'lony whereof I a'lii); my signature.
SAMUEL SEGAL.
