Description

May 17, 1932,
E. W. POPPE DISPLAY BOX OR PACKAGE Filed NOV. 10, 1930 INVENTOR Edward W Po o .6 3% M ATTORNEYS Patented May 17, 1932 UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE V EDWARD w. rorrn, or xamuazoo, urcnroin DISPLAY 301 OR PACKAGE Application filed November 10, 1980. Serial No. 494,552.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is define and pointed out in the claims.
A structure whichis a preferred embodi ment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which lFig. 1 is a perspective view of my box or package with the pull cords loosened or untied, the ornamental ribbon usually provided on candy boxes and packages of this kind being omitted for convenience in illustration.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2-2 ofFigs. 1 and 3.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on line'33.of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the inner closure. I
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section on line 5-5 ofFig.4.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises the box body 1, and the telescoping cover 2, the cover having an opening 3 in the top thereof of substantial size.
The box body and cover illustrated are provideld with projecting flanges 4 and 5 respective y.
The main tray 6 is supported within the box body by means of the spacing pieces 7 disposed at the ends thereof so that there is a space 8 between the bottom of the tray and the bottom of the box, a space 9 between the side of the box and the tray'and a space 10 between the top of the tray and the cover of the box.
' The structure illustrated is provided with an inner tray 11 having an inturned flange 12 on its longitudinal edge.
The ornamental imitation lace paper with which the trays of candy boxes and the like are usually provided are not illustrated.
An inner closure 13 is provided for the opening 3 of the top of the box, this being preferably formed of quite heavy paper longitudinally scored at 14 to increase the flexibility thereof.
Pull cords 15 and 16 are attached to opposite edges of the closure 13 so that the closure may be drawn across the to of the tray to close the opening 3 'or may bo collapsed or withdrawn into the spaces 8.and 9, a pull on the pull cord 16 acting to close the opening while a pull on the cord 15 opens the box to display the contents thereof. These cords are arranged through openings 17 in the side of the box.
A sealing wrapper 18 of transparent mate rial such as glassine paper or other transparent sealing wrapping employed in the wrapping of fancy packages is provided, the pull cords being arranged through holes 19 in this outer wrapper.
The outer wrapper provides a transparent outer panel closure 20 for the opening 3.
With the parts thus arranged the ribbon -or other fancy decorations or seals may be aflixed in the usual manner and the contents displayed or inspected without breaking the sealing wrapper or disturbing the ornamental ties or seals. I have not illustrated these as they may be varied as desired.
To display the contents it is merely necessary to pull on the cord 15 which withdraws the inner closure and the package may be as easily closed by a pull on the cord 16. These cords may if desired be utilized as ties but where a flanged box is used they should be passed backwardly around the box thereby lessening the likelihood of fracturing the sealing wrapper.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various embodiments or adaptations thereof as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as mav be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
. 1. A package comprising a'box including a cover having an opening 1n the top thereof,
a tray arranged Within said box and supported in spaced relation to the top, bottom and one side wall thereof providing a closure receiving space, a closure of fibrous material longitudinally scored on its outer side slidably arranged within said closure space to be drawn across the top of the tray to cover the contents thereof and close said opening in said cover, a sealed wrapping of transparent material for said box providing a transparent outer closure for said opening in said cover, and pull cords attached to opposite edges of said closure and disposed through aligned openings in one side wall of said box and said wrapping.
2. A package comprising a box including a cover having an opening in the top thereof, a tray arranged Within said box and supported in spaced relation to the top, bottom and one side wall thereof providing a closure receiving space, a closure of flexible material slidably arranged within said closure space to be drawn across the top of the tray to cover the contents thereof and close said opening in said cover, a sealed Wrapping of transparent material for said box providing a transparent outer closure for said opening in said cover, and pull cords attached to opposite edges of said closure and disposed through aligned openings in one side wall of said box and said wrapping.
3. A package comprising a sealed box including a cover having an opening in the top thereof, a transparent outer closure for said opening, a tray arranged within said box and supported in spaced relation to the top, bottom and one side wall thereof providing a closure receiving space, a closure of fibrous material longitudinally scored on its .outer side arranged within said closure space to be drawn across the top of the tray to cover the contents thereof and close'said opening in said cover,,and pull cords attached to opposite edges of said closure and disposed through openings in said box.
4. A package comprising a sealed box including a cover having an opening in the top thereof, a transparent outer closure for i said opening, a tray arranged within said box and supported in spaced relation to the top, bottom and one side wall thereof providing a closure receiving space, a closure of flexible material arranged within said closure space to be drawn across the top of the tray to cover the contents thereof and close said opening in said, cover, and pull cords attached to opposite edges of said closure and disposed through openings in said box.
5. A box including a cover having an opening in the top thereof, a tray arranged within said box and supported in spaced relation to the top, bottom and one sidewall thereof providing a closure receiving space, a clo sure of fibrous material longitudinally scored on lts outer side arranged Within said Leaaoao closure space to be drawn across the top of the tray to cover the contents thereof and close said opening in said cover, and pull cords attached to opposite edges of said cloiure and disposed through openings in said 6. A box including a cover having an opening in the top thereof, a tray arranged within said box and supported in spaced relation to the top, bottom and one side wall thereof providing a closure receiving space, a closure of flexible material arranged within said closure space to be drawn across the top of the tray to cover the contents thereof and close said opening in said cover, and pull cords attached to opposite edges of said cloiure and disposed through openings in said '2'. A package comprising a box provided with a cover having an opening in the top thereof, a sealed wrapping of transparent material for said box providing a transparent outer closure for said opening in said cover, an inner closure slidably arranged within said box to be drawn across said opening in said cover and over the contents of the box or to be Withdrawn therefrom, and
pull cords attached to said inner closure and disposed through openings in said box and its sealing Wrapping whereby the inner closure may be adjusted to expose the contents without fracturing the sealing wrapping or adjusted to close the opening and cover the contents.
8. A box provided with a cover having an opening in the top thereof provided with a transparent outer closure, an inner closure slidably arranged within said box to be drawn across said opening in said cover and over the contents of the box or to be withdrawn therefrom, and pull cords connected to said inner closure and disposed through openings in said box whereby the said inner closure may be adjusted to expose the contents or adjusted to close the opening in the cover.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD POPPE.
