DOUBLE SEALING TOOL Ori'girial Filed July 20, 192
Patented Oct. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BENONINOWLAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, ,BY MESNE AS- SIGNMEN-TS, TQ SIGNQDE'STEEL STRiBPIli'G COIVIEANY, A CORPORATION OF DELA- WARE DOUBLE-SEALING TOOL.
Refiled for abandoned application Serial No. 486,057, filed July 20, 19 21. This application filed June 22,
My invention relates to that class of sealing tools in which a sleeve or shield of flexible or pliable material is folded around the meeting ends of flat box-strapping and pressed or otherwise forced into gripping contact with said strapping so as to form a seal capable of resisting the various strains to which said strapping may be subjected during transportation.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, strong and effective tool for the above purpose, which has the added feature of making a double or tw0-part sealing of the shield to the strapping by a single opera-' tion of the tool, each of said sealing connections being independent of the other and each, capable alone of holding the strapping against its ordinary strains. In other words I aliord double protection against displacement of the strapping during transportation.
The present application is a substitute for my prior application, Serial No. 486,057, filed July 20, 1921.
To this end my invention consists, broadly, of a pair of independent plunger dies, operating from the same fulcrum, under control of a pair of cam levers which may be operated together or separately as preferred to move their respective plunger. dies.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have shown my invention in a form especially adapted to making the type of seal shown in Figure 6 but it will be readily understood that my double sealing tool may be varied quite largely in details of construction to produce other typesof seals without in any way departing from the. principle of my invention.
In these drawings Figure 1, is an end elevation, as it were, the. toolbeing laid on its side.
Figure 2,.is a lateral elevation.

ing ends oi? box-strapping sealed by my imprpv'ed double sealing tool.
lie-ierence'may new be had to the drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the diiierent figures.
A, is the part which may be called the body,
or housing, or frame of the tool, being that portion on which the two cam levers, B, C, are mounted, and in which the two loose rolls, D, D,the two plungers, E, E,and the single fulcrum or pivot pin F, are located and iave their held of operation. All of these parts are strong, durable, and oi simple and economic construction.
G, is a type of sleeve of flexible or pliable metal folded around the strap ends H, H, to make the seal as is customary.
The above five parts are the important parts of my improved tool. Each of them has, as shown in the drawings minor feacures which may be varied according to circumstances or convenience. For example The body portion A, is preferably made, as shown, as a casting terminating in a foot or rest plate a, adapted to rest on the box or other article to be strapped and having insets or bottom dies Z), 5, against which'the plunger points come to make the seal required, Grooves c, c, are provided in dies 7), Z) to allow for part of the materialof the seal to be forced downwardly therein by the descending plunger points. The interior of this body A, is provided with guideways in which plungers E reciprocate and is further shaped so that the cam-levers and other movable parts can operate freely as required. It is also preferably provided with a face plate (Z, held by screws, 6, e, to close the side of this open interior.
The cam-levers B, C, consist primarily of two parts, the cams or cam-heads 7, f, and the handles, g, 9. These two levers are loosely mountedupo-n the single fulcrum pin, F, which is journaled in the body A, and they face in opposite directions, preferably, so that the swinging of the two lovers into a closed position, like scissors, causes the plungers to move downward and make the seal,-whi le the spreading or swinging open of the two levers lifts the plungers back to their normal position, and frees the sealed strapping. The loose rolls D, D, serve not only as a sort of ball bearing for the camlieads but protect the upper surface of the plunger block 17%, from undue wear. The levers lift the plungers by coming up against the underside of the flanges i, i. The side portions of the plungers E are slotted at E to receive the fulcrum pin F which extends through both plungers.
'lfhe plunger-s E, E, are preferably provided with points or punches j, j, of a size and shape adapted to form the particular type of seal required. The special points shown in the drawings are adapted to make the depressions 7a, 7a, of Figures 6 and 7.
l v hen employing the tool for scaling together the ends of box strapping, the bottom surface a of frame member A is in engagement 'ith the face of the package or box which is being strapped. It will be seen that immediately above the foot 0, a slot 0? is provided substantially parallel with the bottom snri'a a, said slot furnishing means whereby the metal strapping may be inserted within reach of the die portions of the sealing tool. The plungers E being advanced downwardly by means of the shoulders or cam heads f bearing against the rollers D and raised by a portion of the same surface hearing: against the nndersides of the flanges 2', operation of the two cam levers or han- B and G will function to reciprocate the lungers within the frame member or more :pecilically within the guideways provided for the plungers within said frame member.
T he two plnngers move in separable relation, each one being actuated by one of the lovers B or C. Each one of the plungers carries its own die or deforming member which cooperates with the lower die or complimentary deforming surface in the foot (0.
The usual method of sealing strapping can be adopted when employing my tool the practice being to bring the two ends of the strap together in overlapping relation, placing a metal sleeve around the overlapping ra ends and inserting the assembled overis in engagement with the package being strapped. Pressure is then applied to bring the two handles together, thereby crimping the metal surfaces of the joint in the manner shown in the drawings.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows:
