Among the objects of the invention is to simplify the process of making this and similar material.
10 Another object is a die that simple in construction and operation and that requires 7 little attention to keep in proper condition.
Still other objects will readily appear to those skilled in the art upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 shows an end elevation the two part die open with a work piece in position to be formed. i j V I Fig. 2 is a similar View of the die closed upon the work piece.

As indicated the die is, as usual, in two parts, one being secured in suitable fashion to the plunger of a suitable press and the other to the stationary part.
In the present die, the stationary part is ly a flat hardened insert 21 upon which the work piece 23 rests to receive the pressure of the moving member.
The movableportion of the die consists of a body portion 30 provided with any suitable means (not shown) by which it is secured to the press plunger.
This body 30 is channeled to provide'depending flanges 31 acting as stops for the die jaws 32. These latter are L-shaped in section with the stem of the Lformed into longitudinally extending substantially cylin drical male bearing members 33 adapted to coact with corresponding female bearing members 34, preferably lined with suitable bushings 35, provided in the body 30. vThe L-shaped jaws are therefore adapted to rock about the axes of the bearing portions 33.

It is preferred to provid e the feet 140 with hardened inserts {11 .at their lower outer cor.-
ners to provide against excessive wear at these points, and to extend the rear ends of the feet backward to form heels42 acting as stops to limit the opening of the jaws.
Also carried by the body portion 30, in 1 suitable sockets are plungers having feet 51 adapted to press upon the feet/l0 of the jaws 32 so as to force the latter open when the body 30 islifted, suitable springs 52 being provided in the sockets.
The body 30also carries in its under face along its'center line, a hardened strip 55 adapted to press upon the top of the rib and suitably shape its upper surface.
In operating the die, the work piece 60,
previously ribbed in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3 in any conventional manner, is placed on the bed piece 21 as shown and the plunger portion forced down thereon to the position shown in Fig. 2; This causes the jaws 30 to rock inwardly and press together the sides of the rib while the piece 55 flattens the top, producing the rib form shown at in Fig. 4.
It is of course obvious that the opposed faces of jaws 32 and the under surface of strip 55 may be shaped to produce anydesired rib form and such variation is contemplated.
It is also obvious that the die part may be of any. desired length dependingsolely on the length of the press.
Now having described the invention and the preferred form of embodimentthereof, it is to be understood that the said invention is to be limited, not to the specific details herein set forth but only by the scope of the claims 9 which follow.
