Patented Oct. 14, 1930 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DONALD S. BARROWS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOULD COUPLER COMPANY, OF DEPEW, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF MARYLAND SIDE FRAME Application filed April 18,
This invention relates to side frames for railway trucks and more particularly to the reinforcement of the connection between the ends of such frames and journal boxes formed integral therewith.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is the reinforcement of the union between integral journal boxes and the adjacent ends of cast side. frames for railway car trucks.
Another object of my invention is the strengthening of the junction between integral journal boxes formed at the ends of side frames for railway car trucks by reinforcing the lower web of the tension member of such side frames and extending such reinforce ment beyond the junctions with the journal boxes, and along the roofs thereof.
A further object of my invention is the rigidifying of the end construction of east side frames with integral journal boxes and particularly of such side frames in which the tension and compression members are generally U and inverted U-shape in cross section by providing upstanding ribs extending approximately along the longitudinal center line of the web of the tension member and continued past the junction with the journal boxes over the roofs of said boxes.
3.0 A still further object of my invention is to provide a special reinforcement adjacent the junctions between inL-lgral journal boxes and the ends of east side frames, said side frame preferably comprising a tension member formed with a lower web and upstanding side flanges, said web being united with the jourmail boxes adjacent the upper corners of the inner brass lugs thereof, the junctions being reinforced by upstanding ribs preferably beaded alon their upper edges and tapering longitudinally both ways from the junctions with the nai boxes aiong the web of the tension rr the enter on is of said ribs preferably merging with ribs extending along the transverse center line of the boxes and connecting the side walisof the frame, the junctions with said boxes being preferably additionally reinforced by beaded gussets between the inner r and the roofs of said boxes,
1928. Serial No. 270,922.
side Walls of the boxes and the underside of the tension member. 4
Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention, the scope whereof is defined by the appended claims:
Figure 1 is a plan of one end of cast side frame for railway car trucks, a portion there of being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a fragmentarv vertical longitudinal sectional view of the frame illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4: is a sectional view corresponding 05 to Figure 2 but showing a modification.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 4:, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a sectional view corresponding to that on the line 66 of Figure 4 but showing another modification.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters and first considering the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is shown one end of a cast side frame 1 formed with a compression member 2, a tension member 3, and integral journal boxes 4, only one of which is illustrated. As will be understood, the frame is symmetrical and is formed as usual with the compression member and tension member extending substantially the full length thereof and integrally united at the ends to each other and to the journal boxes, the intermediate portions of said compression and tension members being spaced by bolster guide columns or strut portions, not shown. Inasmuch as certain of the aforementioned features are usual and well known and are not part of my invention, they are not illustrated.
- in the present embodiment of my invention the compression and tension members are respectively inverted U and ii-shaped in cross section, said compression member being formed withv an upper web 5 and depending flanges 6 preferably beaded, as indicated 7, along their lower edges. The tension H1633" v compression member if desirably discontinued short of any union with the journal box to effect a saving in weight and facilitate core removal.
The journalbox is not only connected. to
I the frame by having the flanges of the members, after mergence, integrally united to the roof thereof but the web 8 of the tension member is united directly with the roof of the box along the inner edge thereof or upper edge of the adjacent side wall and.
more specifically preferably in line with the inner brass lug 13 of said box. Adjacent the union with the roof of the box the web of said tension member is preferably slightly thickened, as indicated at 14. The strength of connection with said box is desirably additionally reinforced by providing outstanding gussets 15 preferably formed as flared gxtensions from the web of the tension mem- For additionally reinforcing the connection with the journal box a longitudinally extending rib 16 is preferably provided along the longitudinal center line of the tension member web 8 and frame, said rib preferably being of greater strength directly over the junction between the box and web of the tension member and tapering both ways from said junction so as to gradually merge into the web of the tension member at one end and into a transverse reinforcing web 17 extending upwardly from the roof of the box 4 between the side walls of the frame and preferably tapering from each side Wall to the union with the rib 16. -The upper edge of said rib is preferably beaded along its intermediate. portion, as indicated at 18, giving said rib a T-shape in cross sec- I tion. Said beading preferably tapers both ways from a point nearest the junction between the tension member and box so that the ends of the rib 16 are free from the beading 18. This construction provides for maximum economy in the use of the reinforcing" metal. For further strengthening the connection between the box 4 and the frame, the inner side wall 19 of said box is preferably directly united to the undersurface of the tension member ,3 by a strut or tie member 20, the upper edge of which is preferably spaced from the corner between the web of the tension member and the box and both edges are preferably beadedor flanged, as
indicated at 21, for improving the strength of said member.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, a construction is there disclosed involving a frame 1 having the tension member 3, the compression member 2, and the integral journal box 4 at each end thereof. As in the 11 of the inner side wall 19 of the box is 8' b a gusset 20*, the lower edge of which is pre erably beaded, as indicated at 21, which gusset entirely closes the angle beneath the web of the tension member and inwardly of the inner side wall of the journal box. Except as specifically described in connection with the present embodiment, the construction thereof may correspond with that of the first embodiment.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figure 6, a construction is there disclosed which may be identical with the embodiment illustrated in. Figures 4 and 5 except that the web of the tension-member and the roof 11 of the journal box 4" are provided with a plurality of reinforcing ribs 16 which extend over the junctionbetween the-web of the tension member and the roof of the journal box and taper both ways therefrom. As in the revious embodiment, the ribs 16 mer e into the transverse reinforcing web 17 etween the sides of the frame along the transverse center line of the box. Otherwise the construction of the present embodiment may correspond with that of the previous embodiment.
From the foregoing description it will be appreciated that I have provided means for heretofore became evident by the development of cracks at such points when frames unprovided with my reinforcements were tested.
