YOBK,.ASSIG1\TORTO McKnssoN anon i a BI1\ TS INCORPORATED, or BRIDGEPOBT, ooivnnc'rrour, A CORPORATION or con- NECTICUT i i lipp'lica tionfiled November A primary object of the invention is to pro- .videa vanity case ofunnsualv compactness provided with a mirror and comprising two shell members [hinged together, each shell 2' member having a stamping fitted therein adapted'to retain articles. i
-Another objectof .the invention is to provide a double section vanity case fitted with stampings having pockets thereinand prom vided with trays adapted to receive the usual cosmetics and compartments for retaining change, cigarettes, lighter and other articles commonly carried in a ladys handbag.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vanity case comprising two shellmemhers hinged together, a stamping fitted in each member having a plurality of pockets adaptedto retain articles and a double-face p .metallic mirroras acovering for one of said recesses pivotally connected to a stamping adjacent one edge thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vanity caseprovided with a stamping 1 having a plurality of pockets therein adapted toretain articles" and adouble-face metallic mirror as a cover for one of said pockets pivotally connected to said stamping atone edge whereby when the mirroris raised the article m retained within the pocket will be available and the use of themirror. will not be interferred with. The embodiments of the invention are clearly illustrated by wayof example in the f M accompanying drawings in which similar characters of reference denote correspond ing parts in all of the views and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of one VANITY CASE y a 1928. Serial No. 3181121.

Figure 10 is a longitudinalsectional view greatly enlarged of the modified vanity case in closed position throughthe line 10410 of Figure 8 andlookingin the direction ofthe arrows.
The vanity case-illustrated in Figures1t-o 7 comprises two dished shellnieinbers land 2 hingedly connected together by a barrel hinge 3, and adapted to rest upon each other. Eachof said shell membershas a bottom 4;, sides 5 and 6 and ends? and 8. Fitted withinthe shell member 1 is a stamping 9 comprising a double metal frame 60 having dependingflangeslO around the outer part 7 thereof adapted to retain thestamping with} in the shell member through frictional engagement with the sides and ends ofthe shell member. If desired additional securing means may be provided as for example projections 56 on each cornerof theshell memher 1 adapted to cooperate with shoulders 57 correspondingly locatedon the flanges 10. of the stamping 9. Said stampingis also provided withyrecesses having sides 11 extending towards the inner facejof theshell member and forming pockets 12qand 18 therein. i
compact holder having a-hottom 14, sides. 15 and ends 16. A 'der pufl' 17' are-carried hy the tray compact holder. The pocket 18 is provided wit-h The pocket 12 is adaptedto retain a tray powder compact l7 and powa lipstick holder 19." The tray compact holder is secured within the pocket 12 by nibs20'located on the sides of said pocketland projecting over the upper edges of thesides 15 of the tray compactholder. The bottom 1% of the tray compact holder is dished to conform to the contourof theinnersurface of. the shell member and to provide for a'larger compact. A strip 59 is provided across the bottom of the pocket 12 at the end adjacent the pocket 18 adapted to cooperate with the inner surface of the shell member 1 in supporting the tray in a horizontal position within the pocket 12.
Fitted within the shell member 2 is a stamping 21 having upturned side and end portions adapted to frictionally engage the sides and ends of the shell iember and fasten same therein. As an assist to securing the stamping 2 within the shell member projections (not shown) may be provided at each corner of the shell member adapted to cooperate with the corners of the stamping. The stamping 21 is provieed with a recess having sides 22 extending towards the inner face of the shell member 2 and forming a rectangular pocket 23 adapted to receive a rouge compact tray holder having a bottom 24, sides 25 and ends 26 and carrying a rouge compact 27 and puff 28. The rouge compact tray holder is secured within the pocket 23 by nibs 29 located on opposite sides of the pocket which project over the upper edges of the sides 25 of the rouge compact tray holder. 7 y
The bottom 24 of the rouge compact tray holder also is dished to conform to the contour of the inner surface of the shell memr her 2 and a strip 30 isprovided across the bot tom of the pocket 23 adjacent the upper end of the stamping 21 adapted to coop rate with the inner surface of the shell member 2 for holding the tray in a horizontal position within the pocket 23.
A double-face metallic mirror 31 is hingedly attached to the stamping 21 adjacent the upper end thereof as a cover for the rectangular pocket 23 and the rouge compact 27 therein contained. In order that the mirror may be kept in closed position over the pocket 23 alatching means has been provided consisting of a downwardly extending tongue 32 on said mirror and a cooperating horizontal slot 33 in' the stamping. A thumb-nail projection 34 is provided on the mirror adapted to cooperate with the indenture 3a in the stamping 21 to facilitate lifting the mirror.
The shell members 1 and 2 are held in closed posit-ion by a depressible spring locle ing means located adjacent the frontend of the shell member 1 between the flange 10 of the stamping 9 and side 11 of the pocket 12, comprising a spring bar 37 having a releasing member 38 thereon projecting through a slot opening 39 in the front end of the shell member and an extended pin portion 10 adapted to engage an opening 41in the front end of the coacting shell member 2.
hen the device is in the position shown in Figure 3 access is given to both the powder and rouge compacts and the mirror is in position for use, but if it is only desired to use the powder compact in the shell member 1 it willonly be necessary to open the case and the mirror in shell member 2 need not be lifted. By making the compact tray holders a trifle shorter than the pockets 12 and 23 provided therefor, they may be easily pried out of the pockets when empty and re-fills i11- serted.
In the modified form of my invention illustrated in Figures 8 to 10 there is shown a vanity case of the same general type as that illustrated in Figure 1, except that it is constructed a little 1 rger so as to accommodate additional pockets. In this embodiment the shell member 1 has a stamping 42 with pockets therein for a powder compact tray holder 43, a rouge compact tray holder 14 and a change tray holder 15. A double-face me tallic mirror 16 is hingedly connected to the stamping 41-2 as indicated in Figure 9 of the drawings and serves as a cover for the change tray holder 45. The stamping e2 also has pockets for receiving a lipstick holder 4:7 and a perfume vial 18. The compact tray holders l3 and 44 are provided with powder and rouge compacts 19 and as well as powder and rouge puffs 51 and 52. The last named are conveniently retained in their holders by a spring bar 53 fastened to the stamping 21 between the powder and rouge pockets formed therein.
The shell member 2 is fitted with a stamping 54: adapted to hold a supply of cigarettes and a lighter. A double-face metallic mirror is hingedly connected to the stamping along one edge thereof and serves as a cover for the cigarettes and lighter. A suitable latching means is provided to keep the mirror cover closed over the cigarette compartment when not in use. The same spring catch mechanism is employed for locking the ease as that previously described and illustrated in Figures 6 and 7.
While I have described What I now believe to be the best embodiments of the invention I do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting the scope of the invention, as many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all of which I aim to include in the scope of the appended claims.
