FLOOR POLISHER Fiied Nov. 4,. 1929 Patented Sept. 23, 1930 UNITE* STATES; PATENT OFFICE CHAnLEslR. THORBRN, or CINCINNATI, oHIoQAssIGNoR To THEKA. sV-BCYLE CoM- PANY, on CINCINNATI, CHIC, A ConroeAfrIoN or ozaIo 1 FLOOR POLISI-IER Applicationriea November 4, 192e.` serial No. 404,'780;
The invention relates to oor polishers or the like and has as an object the provision of a polisher adapted to be used withan extend- `ed handle upon floors.
It is an object of the invention to provideV a device of this character having novel means to clamp polishing Vmaterial upon the v supporting member.
\ It is a further Yobject of rthe inventioirtc provide a novel form of structure for such;
supporting member.
It is a further object of the inventionto provide a novel construction of clamping means for the polishing material.
Further objects of the inventionv will ap` pear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings `showing an illustrative embodiment of the `invention and wherein Fig. 1 1s a plan view; `A l Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2 2 of Fig. l;
edges 11, 12 integral therewith and turned `upwardly from the plane thereof, and handle and clamp attaching lugs l13, 14, 15, 16 struck from the material of said plate 10 and projecting upwardly therefrom as shown.
To attach a handle and polishing material clamping means to said plate 10,' thereis shown a rod 17 passing through apertures in said members 13-16 and secured therein as by having the ends ot' the rod upset exterior of lugs 13 and 14. VA handle 18vis shown attached to the rod 17 by means of a socket 19 in which the handle is inserted and formed of a single piece of material, one portion ofA which is formed into the socket 19 and a second portion of which is formed into a loop 2O enclosing the rod 17, the loop 20 being of sutlicient lateral extent to be received between the lugs 15, 16 thereby pivotally attaching the handle to the rod 17. Y
To attach polishing material as sheepskin 21 te the Ysupporting plate 10, there are shown `a pair of lateral clamping members 22, 23. Eaclrof said members 22, 23 is formed from a,
single piece of material deformed to' present abar-like member 24 lformed with a bead or i ridge 25 to stiien the same, the ends ot the member 24 being turned to provide members 26,27v to engage the rod 17 and one edge of the `bar 24 beingturned to provide a member 28 at an angle to overlap the upper edges of l members 26, 27' as at`29, 30.
To cause the members 22, 23 polishingmaterial 21 against the upper surface of the plate 10, each ot' said portions 26, 27 of the members is provided with a cam slot'l, 32 through which th'erod 17 passes. When themembers23, 24 are pulled outwardly the ends of vthe portions` 26,27 will rideV upwardlyupon the rod17 until th'e rod lies in the'extremity of the slot vwhen the members 23, 241 may be swung Vupwardly about the rod 17, as indicated yin Fig; 3. The
to clamp the sheet of material 21 may then be placed under the 'plate 10 and have its ends lbent over the edges 11A and 12 whereupon the members the sheet of material and thentorced inwardlyto the position'shown in Fig. 2 in which position the lower outer corners of jmembers `26, 27 will press against the plate 1104er the sheetot` material 21 and due to the #5f form of the `cam slots 31,182 the' bar 24 will '22, 23 maybe brought down'into contact with Vso be forced down against the edges ot the sheet 'of material `to iirmly clamp the same upon the plate 10.
When assembled in the manner purpose Vofillustration.` I1 greaterlateral extent of the supporting plate 10 is desired it will be obvious that two parallel bars may be provided on the plate, each bar coacting n indicated, liquid wax or the likemay be applied to the a sinfle rod 17 in overla) in "relation for g g e with one only of the clamps, in "which .case the handle member 19,- 2O may engage either l of said rods corresponding torCd 17 nr the handle may be pivoted `upon a third rod supported intermediate said parallel rods, at 10o the Center of the plate, in which 'ease the rods 17 may be mere pins at each end of the plate. lVhile an illustrative embodiment of the invention has .been described as a` polishing pad, it is apparent thatthe invention may be utilized as a sandpaper block, a blottingv paperpad, a manicure pad, or for any service Where it is desired to Clamp a sheet of material upon a carrying plate. n Y Minor changes may be made inthe physical embodiment of the invention Within the scope of the appended claims Without departingfrom the spirit of the invention I claim: f l. A polishing device or the like comprising, in combination, a sheet supporting` plate, cam engaging,` means secured to said plate, a clampV bar and cam means earriedvby said bar ',coaeting between said barv and engaging Vzo means to aetuate said bar to clampa sheet of material upon said plate.
- 2. A'polishing` device or the like comprising', in combination, a sheet supporting plate, a member carried by said plate in spaced relation to one surface thereof, a clamp bar hav'- ing av portion projeeting` laterally therefrom, said portion having a eam slot slidably engaging said member, said slot extendingobliquely away from said plate toward said Clamp bar when said bar is in clamping position. n i
3. A polishingl device or the like Acomprising, in combination, a sheet supporting` plate, a rod .":edly supported on said. plate in spa-eed relation to one surface thereof, apair "of Clamp barseaeh havingl a member extending from each end thereof, said members each provided lwith cam means coaeting` vWith said rod, thevcam Carrying portions of the respective Vmembers engaging the rod in overlapping relation, said cam means forcin-gthe bars toward the plate when the bars are moved laterally toward the rod.
4. A polishing` devieefor the like Comprising, ineombination, a sheet supporting plate, a perforated ear bent. from the material of the plate at each end thereof, a rod supported in said perforations in spaced parallel relation to a surface of said plate, a Clamp bar, the ends of said'bar bent perpendicular thereto to provide arms, Cam means carried by each arm coaeting with said rod to press the bar toward the plate when thebar and arms are moved toward the rod. Y
[LA polishing,` device or the like Comprising, in combination, a supporting plate the edges thereof turned to a position perpendic- /ular thereto, a perforated ear formed-on said plate at each end' thereof standing perpendicular thereto, perforated ears' integral With said plate interinediatefthe length thereof, said perforations being in alignment With the perforations in said first named ears, a rod supported in said perforations, clamping bars each having an arm at eachv end thereof, cam
