The top portion 12 of the base member is provided with a pair of slots 17 which are more or less elliptical in shape. Thismember is preferably formed of bent wire, and comprises a portion 31 engagedby the tongues 27 and disposedalong the surface of the top portion 12 of the stand, and a pairjof loops 33 disposed in parallel planes substantially perpendicular to that ofthe top portion 12. As shown best in Fig.2, the loops 33'ar'e notched near their extremities, as at 35, these notchesbeing engageable by the ears 25 below theto p portions 12 for retaining them in fixedjposition. lines in Fig. 2, whereupon thenotches 35 are caused to engage in the ears 25 and the device is then securely locked. Obviously, the ears 25, being of resilient metal, will yield as the ends of the member 30 are engaged therewith, and will spring into the notches 35 with a strong clamping efiect.
In the assembling of a device embodying my invention, the preferred procedure is as follows: the member 30 is brought into engagement'with the plate 23 and the tongues 26 are bent around the portion 31. The plate is then passed through the slot 18 from the top thereof and riveted to the under side of the base member 10. The device is then in condition for use. Obviously, this is a very simple procedure and can be accomplished with great rapidity. My device is of the utmost simplicity, it being readily apparent that the only operations necessary on the base portion 12 are the punching of the slots 17, 18 and 20. and the riveting of the plate thereto.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same Without departing from the spiritof my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exactform, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
WVhat'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. In a device of the class described, a base member, a resilient retaining member attached to the lower portion of said base member and having a loop extending upwardly through said base member, and a pad-engaging member pivotally secured in said loop and having its opposite ends detachably locked by said retaining member.
' 2. In a device of the class described, a base member, a plate attached to the lower portion of said base member and having a loop extending upwardly through said base member, and a pad-engaging member pivotally secured in said loop, the opposite ends of said pad-engaging member being notched so as to be releasably engageable by said plate.
3. In a device of the class described, a base member, a plate secured to the lower portion of said base member and having forwardly and laterally extended ears on one side thereof and a pair of loops atthe opposite side extending upwardly through said base member, and a pad-engaging member pivotally secured in said loops, the opposite ends of said pad-engaging member being notched so as to be releasably retainable by said ears.
4. In a device of the class described, a base member, a resilient retaining member attached to the lower portion of said base member and having a loop extending upwardly through said base member, and a pad-engaging member pivotally secured in said loop and having its opposite ends detachably locked by said retaining member.
5. In a device of the class described, a base member, a resilient plate attached to the lower portion of said base member and having a loop extending upwardly through said base member, and a pad-engaging member pivotally secured in said loop, the opposite ends of said pad-engaging member being notched so as to be releasably engageable by said retaining plate. 6. In a device of the class described, a base member, a resilient plate secured to the lower portionof said base member and having forwardly and laterally extended ears on one side thereof and a pair of loops at opposite sides extending upwardly through said base member, and a pad-engaging member pivotally secured in said loops, the opposite ends of said pad-engaging member being notched so as to be releasably retainable by said ears. 7. In a device of the class described, a base member, a resilient plate secured to the lower portion of said base member, said plate having forwardly and laterally extended ears on one side thereof, and a pair of loops at opposite sides extending upwardly through said base member, said base member being apertured adjacent each of said ears, and a U- shaped pad-engaging member having its cross portion pivotally secured in said loops and its arms each folded back to form a U with the free ends of the arms insertable through the apertures in the base member, said free ends being notched so as to be releasably retained by said ears.
