Description

SPt- 9, 1930. w. P. sPRAGUE 1,7754329 APPLICATOR Filed Deo. 26. 1928 `Patented Sept.` 9, 193
WILLIAM PARIDEE SPRAGUE, or Los ANGELES, \Canacintra` APPLIGATOR Application iled December 26, 1928. `Serial No. 328,472.
My invention relates to and has for its purpose the provision of an applicato-r particularly adapted, although not necessarily, for use in the treatment of hemorrhoids, fissures, ulcerations, eczema and other pathological conditions of the anus and rectum, and by which various viscous fluids such as soothing emollients and ointments for example, can be distributed to these affected parts with the `lo utmost ease and dispatch and without injury or .discomfort to the patient. y Y
l will describe only one form of applicator embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a view showing in longitudinal central section, one form of applicator embodying my invent-ion, and i Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged detail sectional views taken respectively onthe lines 2-2 and 3*?, Craig. i.
Referring specifically to the drawing in which similar reference characters designatev similar parts in eachof the several views, my
\ invention in its present embodiment comprisesa body B constructed ofhard rubber or other suitable material, bored longitudinally to provide a chamber 10l opening to one end of the body, and in which a charge of viscous fluid such as ointments, is adapted to be received. From the other end of the body projects axially, a nozzle N inthe form` of an lelongated cylindrical extension longitudinally tapered slightly from its point of connection with the body to its free end and adapted to be inserted into the anus and rectum or other parts to be treated. i y
The nozzle is bored to provide a longitudinally extending passage 11 therethrough communicating axially at one end with the chamn ber 10 and terminating at its other end in an axial discharge port 12. The nozzle N is fury ther provided with a pair of radial ports 13 opening laterally of the nozzle at diametrically opposed points, and a `second pair of radial ports 14 at right angles to the ports 13 and also opening laterally of thel nozzle. The ports 13 and'14 communicate with the passage 5o 11 at respectively differentpoints along the fluid being used, and thus result in substan- .chamber and loosely fitsthelatter` sowasto permit the passage of air between the plunger and wall of the chamber duringreclprocatlon `of the plunger and thus prevent the trapping` vso of air in advance of the plunger duringits inward orforward stroke and the creation of a vacuum in the chamber during the outward or return stroke ofthe plunger. Furthermore, by constructing the plunger of uniform diam- .t5 eterfor a distance substantially` equal to or greater than the length of the chamber 10, the possibility of the Viscous fluid which might passbetween the plunger and cylinder collectingbllind the plunger and being With 70 drawn by the plunger from the cylinder, is obviated, thus preventing loss of the fiuid as well as the smearing of anything with which the fluid comes in Contact.` ,p p p i i `The plunger is provided with a head 15 on one end thereof, and the bodywitha continuous flange 16 on its open end; the head constituting an abutment for the thumb. of4 an operator, while the fiange constitutes an abutment for two adjacent fingers between which the body Bis adaptedtobe received, so that by pressure of the thumb upon the headthe plunger canbe readily forced inwardly of the chamber 10to `force the ointment in advance of the plunger from the chamber to the passage 11 and from the latter through the di'scharge 1`3`orts12,"13an`d 14ek `,It will be noted that the inner end of thelchamber 10 is tapered i as indicated at 17 to the confronting end of the passage 1l sopas to force the fluid inwardly 90 towardsl the latter and thus minimize the escape ofthe fluidaround the plurnger` p y,
It willlbe particularly noted that the lateral ports 13 are' of less cross sectional area or size than the axial `port 12 and that the lateral ports 14 are ofless crosss'ectional area or size than the lateral ports 13, the 'proportionate sizes of the portsfbeingsuch 'as to compensate for the viscosity of thefviscous tially equal quantities of the viscous Huid being ejected from all the ports in response to inward movement of the plunger, to the end that the fluid will be uniformly distributed to the aected parts, and With t-he utmost ease and dispatch. The axial port 12 being the furthest remote from the application of pressure by the plunger P to the mass of viscous fluid in the chamber, must necessarily be the largest of the ports, as the resistance ot the Huid to movement Will be greater than at the lateral port 13 and 14, the resistance decreasing from the axial port 12 inwardly of the passage 11, so that by graduating the sizes of the ports in a predetermined relationship to their distances from each other and from the application of pressure to the mass of viscous fluid, the ejection of substantially equal quantities of the fluid Jfrom all the ports Will be insured.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of applicator embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. An applicator comprising a body having a chamber adapted to receive a charge of viscous fluid, an elongated nozzle projecting from the body and adapted to be inserted into the anus, the nozzle having a passage therethrough communicating at one end With the chamber and terminating at its other end in an axially disposed discharge port, the nozzle being provided with a plurality of lateral ports communicating with said passage at respectively dierent intervals along its length, and means for ejecting fluid from the chamber through said ports, the lateral ports being of less cross sectional area than the axial port and decreasing in their respective cross sectional areas in such proportion to the distances from the axial port, at Which they communicate with said passage, that substantially equal quantities of the viscous iiuid will be ejected through all ports in response to an actuation of the ejecting v means.
2. An applicator comprising a body havmg a cylindrical chamber opening to one end of the body for the introduction into the VILLIAM PARDEE SPRAGUE.
Chamber of a charge of viscous iuid, an elonl gated nozzle projecting axially from the other end of the body and having a longitudinally extending passage therethrough communicating at one end With the chamber and terminating at its other end in an axially disposed discharge port, the nozzle having a plurality of radial ports opening to the sides of the nozzle at circumferentlally spaced points and communicating With said passage at intervals along its length, and a reciproeating plunger loosely fitting Within the
