Description
May 11, 1943. E. C. DEEGHTON GREASE GUN CARTRIDGE Filed May 2, 1941 A ttorney Patented May 11, 1943 GREASE GUN CARTRIDGE Earl C. Deighton, Westview, British Columbia,
Canada Application May 2, 1941, Serial No. 391,616
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a cartridge for a grease gun, the general object of the invention being to provide a collapsible cartridge containing the grease with means for connecting the cartridge to the plunger of the grease gun so that as the plunger is moved inwardly the cartridge will be collapsed so that grease will be discharged therefrom through the outlet of the gun, thus providing a device which is simple, clean, a time saver and economical in that there is no wastage of grease.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a grease gun with parts in section showing the invention in use therein.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the lower part of the cartridge and showing the plug which closes the outlet opening in the bottom of the cartridge. 1
Figure 3 is a face view of the plunger or piston showing the means for engaging the clamp.
Figure 4 is a view of the clamp for connecting the upperend of the cartridge with the plunger.
As shown I provide a collapsible cartridge A which contains grease or other matter to be dispensed and said cartridge is formed of soft metal and is provided with the indentations l which are so formed and arranged that when pressure comes upon an end of the cartridge such indentations will cause the cartridge to collapse. The upper end of the cartridge is flattened as shown at 2 and a substantially U-shaped clamp 3 is adapted :to be pressed over this flattened end.
the bight part of the clamp being enlarged andof loop shape and this enlarged part fits in the guide members 4 formed on the plunger or piston 5 of the gun G so that the upper end of the cartridge is detachably connected to the piston or plunger. The other end of the cartridge is formed with an opening which is normally closed by a threaded plug 6, it being understood that this plug is removed before the cartridge is placed in the gun so that the opening will register with the outlet nipple 1 of the gun.
Thus when the piston or plunger 5 is pressed inwardly in any suitable manner, such as by the screw shaft 8 which passes through the cap 9 of the gun and is connected with the plunger or piston, the pressure against the cartridge will cause it to partly collapse at some of the indentations I so that the grease will be forced therefrom through the nipple I. has been fully forced from the cartridge the cap 9 can be removed and then the plunger or piston 5 withdrawn and this will remove the empty cartridge.
The indentations should be 50 arranged in the cartridge that the distance between them is less than one-half the width of the cartridge so that the collapsing of the cartridge at any point in the length thereof will leave a passage through the center of the collapsed part so that there is no danger of any grease being trapped in the cartridge regardless of where the collapsing begins.
It is thought from the foregoing description.
that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim. 1
Having described the claimed as new is:
In combination with a grease gun having a plunger and a discharge opening, a collapsible cartridge containing grease andadapted to be invention, what I is inserted in the gun, said cartridge being provided in one end thereof with a. discharge opening for registration with a discharge opening of the gun, circumferential indentations formed in the cartridge for causing it to collapseunder pressure exerted against the same endw'lse, the opposite end of said cartridge being tapered and terminating in a flat teat, a T-shaped clip clampingly engaging said teat, and means carried by the plunger for interlocking engagement with the T-shaped clip during travel of the plunger.
