My'invention relates to extension tables such as dining room s tables in which addi-l tional table boards may be added by opening .up the sides of the table rand inserting the desired v number of additional boards.
' It is the object of my invention to provide `mechanism in combination With a table which vwith. finechanical extending means. further my obj ect to construct a table so that it lvvill readily'accommodate itself to a mei chanica'l extending device.
; lsion table in open posi `may be'readily actuated by the Woman in the homejwhich Will avoid the necessity of pull-- ing iirst oiione end of the table and then on thev other and incurring the physical strain incidentt'o opening yup a table not proiided t is 'The above and ther ob]ects in connection With `novel means for guiding the sliding members Iof theftable," I accomplish by that certain arrangement and combination of parts of Which'l have illustrated a preferred embodiment. Y
Referring to the drarvings:
Figure 1 is a'perspective kvieW of an exten- 'tion so thatthe actuating mechanism may be seen'.
Figure 2 is a vertical .sectionV taken along the lines 2-2 in Figure l, looking in the ydi-V 'rectionr of the arroWs.
Figure 2-is a vertic l section takenV along fthe lines 21-2'el in Figure looking'in the direction of .the arrows.

, Figure 3 is a vertical-section taken along ,tjlielines 3-3 in Figure l'.y o
v"Figure 4 is a vertical, section'taken along `Figure 5 shows a diagrammatic side ele-k vationyof another modiiication of the type -of extendinginechanism shown lin the other figures. .l V The end pieces of the table top are indicated at l, 2, having the downwardly extending side bars 3, 4. The table top portions 1 and 2'are supported by lengthwise extending rails such as are indicated at`5-5, and theY table top ends consisting of the parts l, 2, kare slidably mounted on the rails being held thereto by the extending mechanism which will be hereinafter described. Legs 6-#6 are mounted on cross braces 7-7 WidthWays acro'sslfunder the rails 3-5.', The, legs may also be mounted directly on 'the cross braces 5-5.` Supports 71` armay also be extended WidthWise of the table at the ends kof the rails 5 5 for increasing'the rigidityofthe assembly and"supporting the pulleys. Thesupporting structurey for the table topfin the illustration shown is, therefore, immovable.
The top partsk are slidable' tofexpose such an open'k areabetween them that a desired Anumber of boards may be-in'serted. For me-v chanically extending the table top V.I have provided mechanism asfollovvs: Extending across'tlie table laterally, preferably vat the vcenter thereof, :["have mounted in journals V8.--8the spindle shaft 9 Which preferably has acent'ral drum portion 10." Ropes or cables lI-ll may be "extended" from fasteners `lla-11a `,near e the inner edges yof the parts 1 and 2 and then lthrough pulleys l2-12a, '1S-13a mountedon the supports 71- a respectively, after y which they are Wrapped around' the drum 101:0'l which they may be secured. |The specilicjarrangement hereinafter described is'not"essential, itbeing my purposefin the particular constructionshown to provide a drum the turning of which Will cause the ends of thetable top to ymove equally to and fromthe vcenterof the table.
Considering iirst Figure 2,a cable 11 visfattachedto a fastener 11a secured close `to the n inner edge of the part l, The cable is then passed to` the'left 'aroundthe pulley l2, then with one ormore Wraps around 4the drum 10 'passing from leftto right clockwise around the "drum l0. v*The cable is then passed under .and arnindy the pulley 121L 'and back to the fastener, froirivvhich thecable Was originally extended.'I
,'Considerinfnovv,V Figure 2a, a, cable is atv 4ktached toa fastener z11,a` close to the inner edge'of the art 2, then lto theleft. around the Ipulleyglv. fterubeing passed around pulley 13 the cable' ispassed around the drum l()l l counter-clockwise fromrleftfto right. Next the cable is passed underand around the pulley 13 and then backv to the originalfastener.
' The'shaft 9 inayhave a portion such as is indicated at 14`having a pin extending radially therefrom which is adapted to be' engaged Cla' to prevent lateral movement of by a detachable turning handle 15 which I ordinarily provide for actuating the extending mechanism. It will be apparent that the shaft 9 may be shaped to engage a handle on either or both sides as shown in Figures 1 and 4. The table end portions 1 and 2 have secured to their lower surfaces track portions such as are indicated at 16'-17 respectively. The track portions may be keptin alignment on the rails 5 5 by means of screws 18 secured in the central zone of the upper surface of the rails 5-5.` The screws have wide heads which act as guides for the tracks which being secured to the Vtable top ends slide with the extension of the table top ends. In `order to provide bearings for the tracks I have furtherfound it advisable to insert rollers 19 within sockets on the sides and tops of the rails 5 5.
The extending mechanism which I have disclosed may be the subject of many mechanical modifications. For example, in Figure 5 I have shown a different arrangement in which the central spindle 9 has a pinion 19a and each one of the table ends 1 and 2 have racks 20 attached thereto which engage the pinion, one above the center thereof and one below. It will be obvious that when the spindle is turned the racks will cause the l. movement of the table ends apart or together in accordance with'the direction in which the spindle is turned. In combination with the rack and pinion mechanism the track and guide arrangement illustrated in Figures 1,
g; 3, and l will preferably be used. I find the use of L-shaped tracks as guiding means are thus provided which will tend to prevent the sliding mechanism from getting out of order. Y Y f Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and` desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an extension table, a base, top boards slidable over said base toward and away from j, Yeach other, .parallel rails fixed to said base and extending in the direction of movement of said top boards, guides upon said top boards, said guides` comprising an angle member one face of which rides upon the top of said Arail and the other face of which eX- tends along the side of said rail, said guides arranged in pairs whereby the top faces of two guides will overlie a single rail, the side faces thereof lying on either side of said rail said top boards, and rollers on thetop of said rails to forma bearing for said top faces of the guides, and rollers on the sides of said rails to provide a bearing for the side faces of said 'r guides. f 1
2. In an extension table,.a base, top boards slidable over said base toward and away from each other, parallel rails fixed to said base and extending in the direction of movement of said top boards, a guide upon each of said top boards for each of said rails, said guides comprising an angle member one face of which rides upon the top of said rail and the other face of which extends along the side of said rail, said guides arranged in pairs whereby the top faces of two guides will overlie a single rail, the side faces thereof lying on either side of said rail to prevent lateral movement of said top boards, and rollers on the top of said rails to form a bearing for said top faces of the guides, and rollers on the sides of said rails to provide a bearing for the sideV faces of said guides.
8. In an extension table, a base, top boards slidable over said base toward and away from each other, parallel rails fixed to said base and extending in the direction of movement of said top boards, a guide upon each of said top boards for each of said rails, said guides comprising an angle member one face of which rides upon the top of said rail and the other face of which extends along the side of said rail, said guides arranged in pairs whereby the top faces of two guides will overlie a single rail, the side faces thereof lying on either side of said rail to prevent lateral movement of said top boards, and rollers on the top of said rails to form a bearing for said top faces of the guides, and rollers on the sides of said rails to provide a bearing for the side faces of said guides, means comprising a shaft fixed to said base and bearing a drum, pulleys upon said'base to endless cable members oppositely wound about said drum and passing over said pulleys, each of said cables attached to and controlling the movement of one of said top boards.
4. In an extension table, a base, and topboards slidable over said base toward and away from each other, and mechanical means for controlling the movements of said top board comprising a shaft rotatably attached to said base and bearing a drum, an endless cable for oachof said top boards and attached thereto, each of said cables oppositely wound around said drum and passing over pulleys at the ends of said base whereby when said shaftis rotated in one direction said top boards will be moved toward each other, and when said shaft is moved in the other direction said. top'boards will be moved away from each other, and means for rotating said shaft. comprising Va detachable han dle.
