To all whom t maz/ concern:
Be it known that I, MYRoN A. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swing`` ing and Sliding Door Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and reliable construction which can be readily installed and easily operated in places where space must be economized.
The door is arranged to swing on a vertical axis and then to slide at right angles to the doorway so as to get it out of the way in the smallest space possible.
Figure 1 is a front view of a construction embodying the improvements of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-.2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section and plan on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing the upper and lower supports for the door.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower suppoiting means.
The door 6 may be of any suitable construction and is provided with a. hinge rod 7 which is preferably let into a groove in the inner surface of the door near one ed e. This hinge rod may be conveniently he d in place by bearingr strip members 8 8. At the lower end the hinge rod is guided in the slot 9 of the bearing plate 10 which is mounted in the iioor and extends inwardly at an angle to the plane of the doorway. At the upper end the hinge rod is guided in a slot 11 in a stationary part of the structure. A removable member 12 may be provided to permit the upper end of the rod to be readily installed.
The plate 10 isA preferably provided with a plurality of anti-friction devices such as rollers 13 supported by lugs 14. The door is supported by these rollers and in order to prevent wear on the door I prefer to provide a metal shoe or plate 15 on the lower Aedge of the door. This shoe is adapted to be supported and travel on these rollers.
The hinge rod 7 is provided with two pinions 16 and 17 vat the top and bottom respectively adapted to mesh with the racks 18 andv 19 respectively so that the top and bottom of the rod will be compelled to move together.
The construction is such that the door can be swung open and closed in the usual manner. When it is desired to push the door out of the way, it is swung to its fullest extent about the hinge rod 7 and then pushed in so that the door travels on the rollers 13, while the ends of the hinge rod are guided at the top and bottom in the slots and the pinions rotate in the racks Soas to compel the top and bottom of the door to travel together and prevent binding.
It will be seen that the parts are simple in construction and few in number, and may be readily installed. Furthermore, there are no parts likely to get out of order.
I claim: l
1. A swinging and sliding door construction comprising a vertical rod, a pinion thereon near each end thereof, a door, bearing st ri securing said rod to said door and permlttmg rotation about said rod as an axis, a track plate extending at a substantial angle to the doorway and havig a guide slot for said rod and anti-friction rollers to carry the lower end of the door, two spaced abutments at the upper end of the door and parallel to the guide slot to guide the upper end o'said rod, one of said abutments being removable, a toothed rack'parallel with the guide slot and meshing with Y the lower pinion, and a second rack carried by one of said abutments and meshing with the upper pinion.. 4. A swinging' and sliding door construction comprising a door having a longitudinal groove in one side near one edge of the door, a hinge rod let into said groove, bearing strips to secure said rod to the door, said door boing rotatable about said rod as an axis, a track plate extending at a substantial angle to the doorway and having a guide slot for said rod and anti-friction rollers to carry the lower end of the door, one of said rollers abutting the lower edge of and carrying the weight ofthe door when said rod is at 30 the end of its travel toward the doorway, two spaced abutments at the upper end of the door and parallel to the uide slot to guide the upper end of said ro( one of said abutments being' removable, a toothed rack parallel with the guide slot and meshing with the lower pinion, and a second rack carried by one of said abutments and mesh ing with the upper )inion.
