This invention relates to mechanism for controlling condensed record sheets in typewriting'machines, one. of the main features of the invention being the provision of'novel means forsecuring a forward shifting or advance ofv the record sheet after the com pletion of .the typing of a bill or item, thereby securing a suitable blank space between the records on thebills or the like.
Whilethe devices for advancing the record sheet may be used in various kinds of machines, they are herein shown in connection with a fan-fold machine of the type shown in the W ernery & Smith Patent No. 1,132,055, datedMarch 16., 1915, in which superposed plies of web are fed around the revoluble platen of an Underwood typewriting machine, sheets of carbon being in- .terleaved with the superposed plies, and the whole forming a unit which loops around the platen, the platen being displaceable upwardly for the purpose of permitting the loop to be straightened or. opened out, whereupon the carbons are'released and hence may be drawn backwardly to face fresh portions of the webs.
In such machines, after each form is filled up by using the typewriter, it is torn off from the web; but the condensed record sheet remains in the machine, not being torn off, and this enables copies of several forms to be accumulated upon one condensed record, which is usually not a web but in the. form of a separatesheet,interposed between the webs and the platen, to form part of the unit.
One of the features of the present improvements consists in the provision of means for advancing the record sheet independently; and this advancing means is preferably connected to the means whereby a release is effected between the platen'and the usual feed-rolls that run thereon, for relieving all the work from the control of said rolls. In the specific form of my invention herein illustrated, I provide upon the delivery s de of the platen apair of feed-rolls or devlces between which-the leading-end of the condensed record sheet is introduced. These rolls, however, are normally separated so the condensed record sheet, but when the re lease 1s effected between the platen and the 'bottom' feed-rolls, these special feed-rolls are preferably effected by means of a pinion which is fixed upon the shaft of the upper of the two new feed-rolls, which pinion meshes with a'station'ary segment, which is concentric with the hinge upon which the platen frame swings upwardly at the platen-displacing operation; This upward movement of the platen is therefore accompanied by a positive rotation of one of the special feedrolls, whereby the condensed record sheet is advanced by co-action with the opposed new feed-roll. This advances the record sheet preferably to the extent of about three linespaces.

The leading endof said condensed record sheet is introduced between a pair of auxiliary feed-rolls 26, 27, which may be arranged at the delivery side of the platen; these rolls, however, be-
ing normally separated, as at Fig.2, and normally ineffective during the line-feeding operations of the platen, so that the condensed record sheet advances idly between said rolls.
' When the platen is lifted with its swing frame 28, Figs. 3 and 4, (comprising arms 29 and a rock shaft or hinge 30, the latter journaled upon the typewriter carriage), to
permit the loop of webs and record sheet to be straightened or opened out so that the carbons can be drawn back to face fresh portions of the webs, said rolls 26, 27 are' brought together automatically and proceed to rotate, thereby advancing the record sheet 25' independently of the remaining work-sheets or webs 10.
The rolls 26, 27, may be brought together automatically in any desired way, for example, by mounting the under roll 27 upon -a rms33 connected by a rock shaft 34, and
providing upon said rock shaft a controlling arm 35, Which is held in either roll-opening or roll-closing .position, by
means ofa detent 37, which may, for example, be in the form of a V-spring to enter either of two notches 38, 39, provided upon-said arm .35. Upon said arm is carried a pin or roller 40, in the path of which is a member in the form of an abutment or cam 41, so that as the platen swing I frame 28 rises, said cam 41 intercepts said pin 40 and causes'the roll-carrying arm 35 and rock shaft 34 to rotate and the spring 37 to enter the other-notch 38 in the arm 35, whereby the under feed-roll 27, Fig. 3, is
caused to press the condensed record sheet 25 against the upper feed-roll 26 and hold it there. In the further displacement of the platen frame upwardly, the pin 40, Fig. 3, escapes from the cam 41 while the spring 37 maintains the arm 35 and roll 40 in the new .positions.
During thisupward displacement of the platen swing frame, a pinion or segment 42 -upon a shaft 43 of the upper of the two condensed record feed-rolls 26,- by reason of its engagement with a fixedpinion 44 which is concentric with thes'haft or hinge 30 of the platen swing frame-28, is caused to rotate, thereby advancing the condensed record sheet 25 in line-feeding direction. The. extent of this advance will depend upon "the extent of movement of the platen swing feed-rolls 27 will be released at the initial movement of the roller 47 thereover until said roller is in a position directly in front of the abutting end of said cam, as in F 1g. 4.
In this posltion of the platen frame, the webs 10 may be. adjusted and the carbons retracted while the record sheet is held by the auxiliary feed-rolls 26, 27 against accidental displacement. I
During the early portion of the return movement of the platen,'the second pin 47 upon said roll-carrying arm 35, Fig. 5, engages the abutment or cam-48 whlch is 111 the path thereof, and thereby forces said arm to return to its normal position with the V-spring 37 in the other notch 39 and the lower feed-roll 27 separated from the upper feed-roll 26; said pin 47 then escaping passes said abutment 48, not meeting with further interference during the remainder of the return movement of the platen down to normal position. Hence,
the principal portion of the rotation of the roll pinion 42 during the return movement of the platen is idle,since the rolls .26,
27 are separated, and the condensed record sheet 25 is therefore not drawn back by said 'rolls. If said record sheet is retracted slightly by reason of the depression of the. platen, thls will be a matter of no moment,
since the original advance of said record sheet effected as aforesaid by its-rolls, will be much greater than the incidental retraction or dragging back of the record sheet during the downward return of the platen I aforesaid.
To set the auxiliary feed-roll controlling mechanism into position for. a succeeding platen-displacing operation, the first pin or roller 40, which has previously co-acted with the cam 41 for moving the feed-rolls 26, 27 into effective over said cam 41 until the roller 40 is moved in front of the abutting end of said cam 41, in which position said cam will be effective to swing vthe arm 35 when the platen is lifted. To permit said first pin or roller to thus move over the cam 41, said cam is also provided with'a pivot 49 and supported by a spring 50 in a manner similar to the forward cam' 48.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that the record sheet 25 will be line-fed together with the plies of web 10 and that it will also receive an extra advance movement independently ofsaid plies, so that it is not necessary for the operator to bear in position, rides back idly= and preferably at the beginning of the return-stroke of the platen.
Variations may be resorted to Within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im rovements may be used without others. aving thus described my invention. '1 claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the com-.
bination' of a platen; a line-space wheel therefor; means to cooperate with said linespace wheel for feeding around the platen webs, carbon sheets and a record sheet as a unit in superposed relation, with the record sheet between the webs and the platen; means for displacing the platen to ease the carbon sheets and permit them to be shifted along the webs; and means connected to the platen-displacing means for advancing said record sheet relatively to said webs and platen.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; means for feeding webs and a record sheet as a unit in superposed relation line by line around said'platen in the form of aloop; means for opening out the loop; and means for automatically feeding said record sheet during the operation of said loop-opening means.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; means for feeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons around the platen; means operable fortretracting said carbons; means operable for stralghteningsaid webs and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons; and means for advancing said record sheet durmg the straightening operation. I III a typewritingmachine, the combinationof a platen, feed-rolls cotiperating with said platen for feeding webs and a record sheet as a unit aroundsaid platen, w th the record sheet between the webs and the platen, means to-displace the'platen and thereby effect separation between the feed-rolls and platen, and meansother than said feed-rolls and operatively associated with .sald separating means, for feeding .Sflld'I'GCOI'd sheet relatively to the webs.

(3. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, releasable feed-rolls below said platen and cooperating therewith for feeding webs and a record sheet as a unit around the platen, With the record sheet between the webs and. the platen, means for displacing the platen, auxiliary feed-rolls above said platen, and means automatically cooperating with said auxiliary feel-rolls for feeding said record sheet relatively to the platen when the platen is displaced.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen for line-feeding a web and a record sheet, of means for straightening the web, and means for advancing said record sheet around the platen during a web straightening operation, said advancing means effective to hold said record sheet against displacement during readjustment of the web.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen for line-feeding webs,
a record sheet and interleaved carbons; of
means for retracting said carbons; means for displacing the platen to enable the retraction of the carbons and the re-adjustment of the webs; and feed rolls for advancing said record sheet during the platen displacing operation.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen for line-feeding webs, a recordsheet and interleaved carbons: of means for retracting said carbons; means for displacing the platen to enable the retraction of the carbons and the re-adjustment of the Webs; and feed rolls for advancingsaid record sheet during the platen displacing operation, said feed rolls acting to hold the record sheet against displacement during carbon-retracting and web-adjusting operations.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen for carrying webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons; means for advancing said webs, carbons and record sheet simultaneously; feed rolls for advancing said record sheet independently; means for retracting said carbons; means for displacingsaid platen to enable the retraction of said carbons, means for causing said feed rolls to rotate effectively when said platen is displaced, and means causing said feed rolls to rotate ineffectively when said platen is returned.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, means for simultaneously feeding a plurality ofsuperposed sheets as a unit in the form of a loop around said platen, means for feeding a single one of said sheets independently of the others, mechanism operable to permit the opening out of the loop, and means for automatically actuating said single sheet-feeding means at the operation of said mechanism.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, means for simultaneously feeding a plurality of superposed sheets as a unit line by line around said platen, platenmoving mechanism, means for feeding a single one of said srnerposed sheets relatively to the others while the latter remain in place in the machine, andmeans for antomatically actuating said single sheet-feedin'g means at the operation of the platenmoving mechanism.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; means for feeding webs, a record, sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; means operable for retracting said carbons; means operable for straightening said webs and carbons to perlmit the retraction of said carbons, said means causing a retraction of said record sheet when returned to normal position; and means for compensating for the retraction of said record sheet.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; means for feeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; means operable for retracting said carbons; means operable for straightening said webs and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons, said means causing a retraction of said record sheet when. returned to normal position; and m-ans for compensating for the retraction of said record sheet during a straightening operation. J
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; means for feeding webs, 'a record sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; means operable for retracting said carb means operable for straightening said webs and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons, said means causing a retraction of said record sheet when returned to normal position; and means for compensating for the retraction of said record sheet prior to said retraction of the record sheet.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; means for feeding webs,
a record. sheet and interleaved carbons nation of a platen; rolls for feeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons-around said platen; a carbon carriage for retracting said carbons; a platen frame displaceable for straighteningthe webs, record sheet and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons by said carriage, said platen causing a retraction of said record sheet when returned to normal position; and auxiliary feed rolls for advancing said record sheet an amount equal to or greater than the amount of said record sheet retraction.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; mechanism forfeeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; a carboncarriage for retracting said carbons; a platen frame displaceable for straightening said webs, record sheet and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons by said can riage; and feed rolls for advancing said record sheet during the displacing of said platen frame, said feed rolls being ineffective during the return of said platen.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a; bodily displaceable platen, releasable feed rolls cooperating with said platen for feeding webs and a record sheet around said platen, and feed rolls independent of said platen and controlled by the bodily movement of said platen for feeding said record sheet when the other feed rolls are released.
20..In a typewriting machine, the combination of a swingable platen, feedrolls cooperating with said platen for feeding a work-sheet around said platen, and auxiliary feed rolls for said work-sheet rotatable in two directions by the swinging of said platen, effective when rotated in one direction, and ineffective when rotated in the other direction.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a swingable frame for said platen, means cooperating with said platen for feeding a work-sheet around said platen, and means cooperatingwith said frame for feeding said worksheet, the effectiveness of both said feeding means being controlled by the movement of said frame.
22. Ina typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, feed-rolls coiiperating with said platen for feeding a plurality of work-sheets, feed-rolls independent of the platen for feeding one of said work-sheets when the other feed-rolls are ineffective, and means controlled by a bodily movement of the platen for determinin the effectiveness of said feed-rolls.
23. n a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, primary feed-rolls for simultaneously advancing webs and a record. sheet around said platen, auxiliary feedfor automatically rendering said auxiliary feed-rolls effective when said primary feedrolls are released, and means for automatically releasing said auxiliary feed-rolls after said record sheet is advanced.
24. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a displaceable bination with a platen, of a displaceable platen frame, primary feed-rolls for feeding webs and a record sheet to and around said platen when said platen is in normal position, auxiliar feed-rolls normally ineffective for feeding said record sheet, and means for rendering said auxiliary feed rolls effective when said platen frame is displaced. a
26. Ina typewriting machine, the combination with a laten; of a platen frame displaceable to permit the retraction of carbons; primary feed-rolls for feeding webs, record sheet and carbons to and around said platen; auxiliary feed-rolls normally ineffective for feeding said record sheet; means for rendering said auxiliary feed rolls effective at the initial part of a platen-displacing operation; and means rendering said auxiliary feed-rolls ineffective at the initial part of a platen-returning operation.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen; of a platen frame displaceable to permit the retraction of carbons; primary feed-rolls for feeding webs, record sheet and carbonsto and around said platen when said platen is in normal posi- .part of a platen-returning operation.

In a typewriting machine, the combination witha platen;-of a platen frame displaceable to permit the retraction of carbons; primary feed-rolls for feeding webs, record. sheet, and carbons to and around said platen; substantially stationary auxiliary feed-rolls for feeding said record sheet; movable auxiliary feed-rolls normally ineffective; and means for moving said movable auxiliary feed-rolls into engagement with said record sheet and, said stationary auxiliary feed-rolls at the initial part of a platen-displacing operation.

In a' typewriting machine, the combination-with a platen; of webs, a record sheet and interleaved'carbons around said platen; a platen frame displaceable to per-- mit the retraction of said carbons; a paper tableon said frame; primary feed-rolls for feeding said webs and carbons over said table; auxiliary feed-rolls over said table; and feed-rolls under said table. cooperating with said feed-rolls over said table for feeding saidrecord sheet.
- 31. In atypewriting machine, the combination'with' a platen, of-mechanism for linespacing around said platen both a web and a record sheet between said web and platen, means shiftable for permitting independent adjustment of said web to bring a succeeding section thereof to the writing point, and

effective and mounted to run upon the other side of said record sheet; a rock shaft on the platen frame for carrying said movable auxllia ry. feed-rolls; an arm on said rock shaft; and a substantially stationary member cooperating with said arm for swinging said rock shaft to movesaid movable feedrolls into effective cooperation with said stationary rolls at the initial part of a platendispla-cing operation.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen; of a platen frame displaceable to permit the retraction of carbons; means for feeding webs, record sheet and carbons around said platen; substantially stationary auxiliary feed-rolls to run upon one side of said record sheet; movable auxiliary feed-rolls normally ineffective and niounte'd to run upon the other side of said record sheet; a rock-shaft on'the platen frame for carrying said movable auxiliary feed-rolls; an arm on said rock-shaft; and a substantially stationary member cooperating with said arm for swinging said rockshaft to move said movable auxiliary feedrolls out of effective cooperation with said displaceable .for straightening the webs, record sheet and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons by said carriage, said platen causing a retraction .of said record sheet when returned to normal position; auxiliary feed-rolls for advancing said record sheet an amount equal to or greater than the amount of said record-sheet retraction; and means for positively and automatically driving said auxiliary feed-rolls when the platen frame is displaced.
35. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; rolls for feeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; a carbon carriage for retracting said carbons; a platen frame displaceable for straightening the webs, record sheet and carbons to permit the retraction of said carbons by said carriage, said platen causing a retraction of said record sheet when returned to normal position; auxiliary feed-rolls for advancing said record sheet an amount equal to or greater than the amount of said record sheet retraction; and gearing controlled by said platen frame for positively and automatically driving said auxiliary feed-rolls when the platen frame is displaced.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen; rolls for feeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; a carbon carriage for a shaft on said frame on which said feed-- rolls are fast; an arcuate gear on said shaft;
' and a stationary arcuate gear meshing with the gear on said shaft for positively driving said auxiliary feedrolls.
37. In a typewritingmachine, the combination of a platen; rolls for feeding webs, a record sheet and interleaved carbons around said platen; a carbon. carriage for retracting sald carbons; a platen frame swingable for straightening the webs, record sheet and carbons to permit the retrac sheet when returned to normal position; -a
hinge on which said platen frame swings;
auxiliary feed-rolls for advancing said rec-' 0rd sheet an amount equal to or greater than the amount of said record sheet retraction; a shaft on said laten frame on which said auxiliary fee -rolls are fast; an armate gear on said shaft; and a stationary arcuate gear on said hinge meshing with the gear on said shaft for positively and efiectively driving said auxiliary feed-rolls when said platen 1s swung to carbon-retracting position.

In a typewriting machine, the com-- binationwith a platen, of means for feeding webs, carbons and an underlying record sheet around said platen, means for displacing the platen to enable'the retraction of said carbons, feed-rolls for advancin said 'record sheet during the platen-disp acing operation, means for causing the feed-rolls to grip said record sheet m a platen-displacing operation, means for causmg the feed-rolls to release said record sheet in a platen-returning operation, and means for holding said feed-rolls releasing position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line-space wheel therefor, means to cooperate with said linespace wheel for feeding around the platen webs, carbon sheets and a record sheet as a unit in superposed relation, with the record sheet between the webs and the platen, means for displacing the platen to ease the carbon sheets and permit them to be shifted along the webs and means connected to the platen-dispiacing means for advancing said record sheet relatively to said webs and platen, said record-sheetadvancing means including an actuator which is inefiective during the feeding of said unit.
