Description

June 24, 1930. c. LANDEsKRoENER PROCESS OF TREATING ARTIFICIAL FILAMENTS Filed Jan. 28, 1929 Patented June 24, 1930 CARL LANDESKROENER, F DRESDEN, GERMANY PROCESS 0F TREATING' ARTIFICIAL FILAMENTS Application filed January 28, 1929, Serial No.
The present invention relates to a process of treating cakes of artiiicial silk or filaments produced in spinning centrifuges.
According to the process of the present invention the cake is suspended from a rod and treated in this condition with liquids or other substances by means of which the-cakes are Washed, freed from sulphur and copper, bleached, dyed, and subjected to further treatment. The rod may be .replaced by other suitable devices such as a reel comprising several rods and the like. To prevent entanglement, the cake may be tied several times with twine or skeined.
Another feature of the invention is that the rod or supporting means from which the cakes are suspended can be rotated to change the parts of the cakes coming in contact with the supporting means.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which: v
4Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cakes suspended from a rod; and,
Figure 2 a side view of Fig. 1 showing the superimposed spraying device.
l is the spinning cake; 7, the spraying outfit; 3 is a smooth preferably angular rod from which the spinning cake 1 is suspend- 30 ed; 6 is the lower' weighting rod placed within the cakes to weight them; 2 are threads or twine-tied around the cake and serving to hold the spinning cake together. 4 and 5 are lateral stops for the purpose of keeping H the spinning cakes in close formation. 7 is the spraying device for the cakes and containing the various liquors for treatment.
The process is applied as follows:
The cakes 1 are formed and folded fiat after threads or twine 2 have been wound around them several times and then placed so tightly on a suitable smooth and square or other angular' rod 3 that the layers of filament cannot shift and the shifting is further prevented by the lateral stops 4 and 5 arranged on the rod. Below and inside the spinning cake, a suitable round rod 6 serves as weight to prevent the layers of thread of the cakes from shifting. During the subsequent treatment of the cake coni- 335,573, and in Germany February 13, 1928.
prising Washing, elimination of sulphur and copper, bleaching and dyeing the parts coming in direct contact With the angular rod 3 can be changed simply by turning the latter so that the hands need not be brought into contact with the threads. The rods 3 charged with spinning cakes in the manner described are moved continually past the stationary 'spraying outts 7 containing Washing and other liquids respectively and can thus be treated in a short. time by a relatively small quantity of Washing agents. It is advisable to provide filters, especially for Water containing traces of iron, manganese, lime, salts etc., to insure uniformity in the treatment and dyeing of the filaments. The spinning cakes are then dried on rods and, without having been reeled, can be dissolved and distributed over spools of any kind by means of small reels to await further treatment.
v This method reduces the cost of produc-y tion considerably while simultaneously reducing waste by careful handling of the artificial silk, etc. and by increasing the quality of the finished product. The spinning material can be twisted when it is freed from acid or copper or sulphur or when it is bleached.
I claim A process for treating cakes of rayon obtained fr'om a centrifugal spinning box, preparatory to sprayingin the various liquid agents under a series of sprays for the purpose of Washing, desulpliurizing, bleaching and the like; said treatment consisting in threading the cakes side by side on a suitable supporting rod having angular crosssection, Weighting the assembled cakes by inserting a suitable rod and rotating the supporting rod during the spraying operation in order to expose different parts of the cakes to the spray.
Intestimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
DR. CARL LANDESKROENER.
