Abstract

<PICT:0357919/IV/1> A plurality of spun cakes of artificial silk is subjected to the various wet treatment processes in an ordinary large centrifuge, each cake having been wrapped up in, or bound up in, a wide meshed, net-like fabric and pressed to form a flat skein or hank. The fabric used for protecting the cakes may be of the nature of the so called hair-nets, and may be in the form of a tube; artificial silk is preferably used as filament material for the fabric, but twisted cotton yarn is also suitable. The cakes are wrapped by inserting the tube-like fabric through the cake so that the end of the tube projecting at the top may be turned over outwardly and caused to embrace the whole cake; in a similar manner the end of the tube projecting underneath the cake is bent over outwardly and caused to embrace the cake. Alternatively, the tubular fabric may first be drawn over the exterior of the cake and the ends then inserted through the cake. The length of the tube may be just sufficient to pass round the cake and in this case, the fabric is provided at both ends with strings which are tied together as soon as the tube has been drawn over the cake on all sides. The assembled cakes 1 are placed in the centrifuge 2 preferably by arranging several circular series in one layer in a radial direction and a series of such layers are arranged one above the other. The treatment liquids are introduced into the interior of the centrifuge through the perforated spray tube 3 and are atomized against the layers of spun cakes after the centrifuge has been started up. The cage of the centrifuge may be made resistant to all the treatment baths such as acids and salts, desulphurizing baths, bleaching baths, and scrooping baths. For this purpose the cage and other moving parts of the centrifuge may be made of a special resistant steel or of an artificial material. The non-resistant metal parts may be coated with protective layers for example a noble metal or an artificial substance. Coatings of hard rubber are suitable when the centrifuge is to be used for acid treatment, and ordinary iron is suitable for alkaline treatment as in the case of desulphurizing. Separate centrifuges may be employed for the acid and the alkaline treatments.
